After reading all the wonderful reviews for this salad, I am planning to make it tomorrow for a wine tasting dinner that we are having. Unfortunately, I have not purchased pears yet, and I have a feeling that what I find will be too hard to use. I have one good pear by chance in my fruit bowl. Does anyone think that I could substitute apples for the pears? (I also happen to have a bowl full of apples!)

Thanks for any advice,
Kim

Oh yes, oh yes, Kim! I substituted apples the first time I made this, and clementines the second!!! ;) Oh yum, yum, yum. It was good. I will admit though that I used my GOOD balsamic vinegar (the $30 a bottle kind - it was a gift!!), which may have attributed something extra, but I will still make this with regular balsamic when the day comes that I don't have that bottle of the good stuff anymore.

But substitute whatever fruit you like. I also substituted mesclun mix the first time, and baby spinach the second. The dressing is what's key here, not so much the salad ingredients. ENJOY!!
