Like m4star I LOVE the soundtracks to "Rushmore" and "Oh Brother" and anything by Nick Drake. Lately I have been listening to:
Sarah Harmer (check her out - She's GREAT)
Moby
Bonnie Raitt (The Collection)
Saint Germaine
Kelly Jo Phelps
Bjork
Joan Armatrading
Steely Dan :)
Aimee Mann
Radiohead
Dr. John
Quite a crazy mix, I know. Just trying to keep things interesting!

OMG, another Joan Armatrading fan!! Bjork, too (even from her days as a Sugarcube).
Don't worry about an extra post- people like me will respond (but not necessarily with car/commuter cds, as in the original post). More like a general music "chat."
I recently introduced DH to the band Cake. He is completely hooked and went out and bought 3 of their cd's! They're fun, silly and definitely twisted- but I love 'em!
Other obscure favorites (though I'm sure someone here has heard of them):
Judybats
Hunters and Collectors
Proclaimers
Warren Zevon
Jane Siberry

I love Jane Siberry! Her voice is so beautiful. I love the song "Calling All Angels" with K.D. Lang singing harmony.
Funny - DH introduced me to Cake when we first met. They are a staple for road trips!
Sugarcubes "Life's Too Good" was one of my first 'alternative' (I hate that description) albums - that and Sinead O'Connor's "Lion and The Cobra" It's amazing how music can bring you back to a period in your life.
Thanks for responding to my "accidental thread" :D

AndreaU- I love Cake!! Thank you for mentioning them! I'm going on a road-trip tonight and was trying to think of some good put-me-in-a-happy-mood music. I will have to remember to pack those CDs.
Another fun and silly group I like...They Might Be Giants. They crack me up.

"Lion and the Cobra" was a fave in college... I have it on cassette and haven't listened to it in a while. Time to warm up the tape deck!
SuzyQuzy- I LOVE TMBG, too! Love the song "Istanbul."
I'm a big fan of goofy, silly bands. I'll throw a couple more out there for ya'...
Colorblind James Experience
Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet (any fans of the show "the Kids in the Hall" will know them from the theme song, "Having an Average Weekend")
Barenaked Ladies ("I would buy you some art- A Picasso or a Garfunkel")
Beck- ok, not a band, but he's just so funky and laid back. A way cool cat.
Squeeze- an "oldie" but a goodie!
