I want to send someone a gift of steaks so I'm looking for reviews of the two companies I know of: Kansas City Steaks and Omaha Steaks. Any comments regarding quality and value? Suggestions of other companies? If this has been discussed before, maybe someone could post the link for the thread.
TIA for the info.

Ellyn,
I can tell you that the steaks I've gotten from Omaha Steaks(as a gift for the past 5 years at work) are a great quality(don't know about the value since they're gifts). Also, my uncle gives my parents these as a gift (I think steaks & hamburger patties) as a gift at Xmas and I would respect his opinion(He knows quality I would think)!!! So, for me, Omaha is a great choice, but I don't know of any others. Happy gift buying!!!!

I've only bought and been given Omaha Steaks. They're a little pricey, but they've always been wonderful. One year, someone sent us the filet mignons and lobster tails for Christmas. It still stands out as one of our most memorable dinners.

I have given Omaha Steaks many times for gifts including to my OB/GYN after the birth of my twins.

Quality wise the steaks are great as are the chicken dishes. They are a bit pricey though.

I would highly recommend them

We received Omaha Steaks as a Christmas present last year. They were wonderful. Even the hamburgers were delicious. Highly recommend them. The quality was excellent also.

I've given Omaha steaks to my dad for his b-day, Father's Day, etc and he loves them. I'm not a steak eater, but he says the quality/taste is great. They are a bit pricey, but very often the company has some sort of special offer going (so you can usually find a pretty good deal).

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'll be ordering from Omaha thanks to your reviews. BTW, Omaha Steaks also sells packages on eBay!! I'll be checking the packages there as well as through their e-store.

Omaha Steaks are great. I buy them for US. Oh, HSN sells them as well. I saw them on there about a month back, and ordered them. They were shipped from Omaha Steaks, and the price was better than from the catalog.

Omaha Steaks are great, however, you should definitely give Kansas City Steaks a try. I was reading an article in either Cooks Illustrated or my local newspaper food section (sorry, can't remember) and they ranked Kansas City Steaks at the top of the list.....it was up there with some crazily expensive place in New York. Kansas City ranked higher than Omaha -- and best of all, is a bit less expensive.

Their website is www.kcsteakhouse.com

I ordered some top sirloins from Omaha steakhouse and they were fine -- but not any better than the ones I buy at my local grocery store.....just way more expensive. Based on what I've read, I really want to try Kansas City Steakhouse.

I think we're talking about two different places. The link for Kansas City Steakhouse is not the same as the mail order business for Kansas City Steaks. AFAICT the steakhouse doesn't do mail order.
I remember the article, but also not the source (Gourmet, maybe?) I don't think I noticed Kansas City Steakhouse, probably because I didn't think there was any located near me. However, I've got to agree with the article- the BEST steak is at Peter Lugars in Brooklyn NY!! With their funky side dishes and apps (tomato and onions, hash browns, side of bacon, creamed spinach) its a NY institution- worth the trip and the money!

I know mail order steaks are pricier than store, or even prime butcher shops- but when you want to send a gift of meat (!) there's really no other way.

I order alot from Omaha. I tried them about five years ago. Now they call me at home with special offers because I am one of their valued customers. They have given me some great deals and I just ordered from them again last night. I got about 20 steaks for $119- this included filet mingnon, 2 big t-bone steaks, and a couple of prime ribs- there are also strip steaks and sirloin tips (great for stir fry and shiskebobs). It may seem a bit expensive, but you will not find the same quality in any store. They often run specials if you check out their website.

I'm glad you saw that article too. Maybe it was Gourmet. They did give a link though and I thought it was KCsteakhouse. I just did a search and it is kcsteak. Sorry about that . Anyway. Their prices look better than Omaha and if they taste better in tastes test, I think they are worth a try.

The other thing about Omaha is once you buy something from them, they call you in the evening at dinner time to try to sell you more steak. Granted, they have the friendliest telemarketers I've ever heard, but they are annoying.
