Whenever I look all I can find is a wild rice mix with white rice. When recipes call for wild rice do they mean that mix? If not, where do you find wild rice?

My grocer sells small packages of wild rice in the rice aisle. However, I usually find it in bulk at my local health food store. I've found that the rice there is more fresh and flavorful than boxed or bagged rice.

Hi Bev,
For the wild rice recipes in the Oct. 2000 issue (I presume you are thinking of these recipes), you need to find a box of plain wild rice, without white rice or anything else mixed in. You can probably find it where you find rice in your grocery store. It tends to come in quite a small box, and is black or dark brown. It is fairly pricey but well worth it, IMHO! If your grocery store does not have it, a health food store might be the answer.

I have also seen wild rice in fairly small clear bags, cellophane type, often on the top shelf of the grocery store. Besides health food stores, specialty stores (Cost Plus imports, Williams Sonoma) will often carry wild rice.

I found some in packages at Super Target and in bulk at Wild Oats Market. Hope this helps! JennyLiz
