You've all read about my lack of counter space, so I may part with my countertop knife block. I saw one in a catalog that fit underneath the upper cabinets and swung out. Now that I'm thinking about getting one, I can't find it. I thought it was in Chef's. Has anyone seen one like that recently and know where I could find one? Thanks.

I just looked through my Chef's catalog yesterday and don't recall the model you mentioned (although I can't be sure it's NOT there)... but, as I was paging through I found another idea that might be of use to you. How about one of the magnetic knife holders? They're not unattractive in and of themselves. You can mount these on walls or on the inside of cabinets/closets -- and they really work.

I'll be interested in what you choose to do.

Check out www.cutlery.com (http://www.cutlery.com) It's a great selection of all sorts of knife-related stuff and the prices are reasonable. I think I remember seeing some wall mount knife blocks, but maybe they have the under the cupboard type, too.

Hi Beth - I did look on www.cutlery.com (http://www.cutlery.com) for the swing out knife block (wanted to see what one looked like!) and they do carry one for $50 (list price is $70) from Wusthof Trident.

Thanks. I'll check them out. I think this is getting serious now! I even went and looked at a dishwasher yesterday. Did you know they make ones that really wash dishes? Mine's been a drying rack so long I hardly remember. Back to the knives, every few inches helps!

Beth, do you have enough drawer space to use an in-drawer knife block? That's what I finally went with when I ran out of counter space, and it works beautifully. The one I got has slots for eight knives (four short and four long), and takes up only 2/3 of the width of the drawer, leaving room on the side of it for other tools.

I'm sure you can find some of these locally, or check out www.cutlery.com (http://www.cutlery.com) again. As an added bonus, these in-drawer blocks are less expensive than countertop or swingout blocks.

Cheers, Phoebe

I already have one in-drawer knife "block". My husband, the one who worked in a ship's galley for a while, and I each had some knives before we got married. Since we both cook and we needed some specialty knives, we've added to those.

I wrote Chef's, and they carry the same swing-out block as cutlery.com, where I saw the picture. I have a fairly deep molding on the bottom of my cabinets, so I'm now wondering if it would clear. I like the idea of the magnetic bars, but I'm not sure how they'd work or where I could put them. The area where I would use them most has no walls. This is a weird kitchen.

Hmm, okay, back to square one. How about cutlery.com's black-trimmed clear acrylic knife holder? In addition to being gorgeous (and, alas, expensive), it seems to have a much smaller footprint than regular blocks. Just a thought.

Beth, I know exactly what you mean. I just did a kitchen remodel and bought a new dishwasher (GE Triton). First of all it actually DOES wash dishes. I've had to find somewhere else to store my extra pitchers and plasticware. Second, it is extremely quiet. I mean really, really, really quiet. I have a 'compact' condo and I can now use the dishwasher and hear the TV. Amazing.

That's interesting. I haven't even looked at GE, in large part because the current noise box is a GE. I've looking at a KitchenAid (made by whirlpool), and one of the things I like is the lack of a tower in the middle, so you can load the entire bottom rack without a break. Still working on the knives and block ideas.
