For all you Buffalonians like me (yes, I still consider myself one even though I haven't lived there for 10 years), you have your "must bring back" list of goodies. DH & I spent Christmas with my parents in Buffalo- narrowly escaping several feet of snow- and came back with:

Watson's Sponge Candy
Loganberry Syrup
Chiavetta's Barbecue sauce/marinade
Weber's mustard
Wegmans chocolate chip cookies
Bison French onion chip dip

Bummed, though, that we couldn't find Wegmans Hot Ginger Ale. It was discontinued once, then brought back. Maybe it was phased out again.

While there, we had lunch one day at Ted's Charcoal Hots and another at Duff's (for wings, naturally). We also stocked up on wine at Premier.

Anyone else bring back good stuff from "back home," whether that's Buffalo or elsewhere??

Well, I'm not from Buffalo, but I sure empathize with them. Tahoe has had a lot of snow this year as well, thankfully not all in the last week!!!!! (BTW, DH and I were huge Bills fans until they kept Johnson and ousted Flutie. If they get a decent quaterback back in there, I will once again be a fan)

I went back home to Indiana to visit relatives and brought back some Indiana wine (Yes, I brought back Indiana wine to California  ) It is a special Meade wine-- made from honey instead of grapes-- and with Indiana blue laws, I can't have it shipped to me here.

I grew up in a military family, and we moved around a lot, though 'home' was my grandparents' houses in PA and VT. As a result, there are things that we love from all over (e.g. NC=barbecue and hush puppies, which they can't get right north of the Mason Dixon line, NM = Pinon nuts, etc.).

But when I go back to the Philadelphia area (where my parents settled, and where I lived until 3 years ago) I always bring back scrapple and Celentano brand frozen eggplant parmesan, when I can. Also Lore's Chocolates from the old part of town. The breads there are different from the ones in New England - crustier. Alas, I can't transport either an Italian Hoagie or a Philadelphia Cheese Steak, since it can get messy.

(Some day I'll hold forth on the plethora of goofy-crafted 'Philly' cheese steaks I see all over the place that would send the statue of William Penn on Phila's city hall into a dead faint.)

DH and I were going to go back to Buffalo to visit my parents between Christmas and New Years, but for some reason decided to forego it this year. Something told me..............

Didja get the new quart size jar of mustard, or stick with the whimpy smaller jar?? :D :D :D

Go Flutie! I am now a die-hard San Diego fan!

I am from your neighboring town, Rochester, where I spent my holidays. I spent quite a bit of time in Wegmans (Stop&Shop just doesn't do it for me). I meant to but forgot to pick up a pack of Zweigle's White Hots...guess I'll have to wait for summer!

I had no idea Bison was a local brand! I guess I took it for granted...sigh...

Are there any Country Sweet fans out there?

Rebecca,

"Hots" from Wegmans are ALWAYS in the freezer...have you ever tried the "Lite Hots"?...they only have 7 grams of fat per sausage...they're so yummy!
Also, something new that came out this summer: Wegmans "Spinach & Feta Cheese Sausage"...same packaging as the Hots, and only 7 grams of fat per sausage also...even my "non-feta loving" husband gobbles these up in a flash...and they are really low-priced, if you haven't tried them and your Wegmans carries them, give them a try!

beckms- Ah, yes... Zweigles! I also lived in Rochester for 5 years and developed a fondness for white hots. Also a Country Sweet fan. Come to think of it, Rochester has some good stuff too. One thing I'll always love (and I think I'm due for one) is the Nick Tahou's garbage plate!! Unfortunately you can't get one in a store and bring it home. I don't think they'd travel well straight from Nick's. Actually, when I was at RIT the dining hall occasionally had Nick Tahou's night and they would serve garbage plates! Ah, the good ol' days.

Unfortunately we rarely get to Rochester, even though we get to Buffalo a few times a year. We're always on a short schedule there's no time for a stop (at least for the kind of stop we'd like to make to have it be worthwhile). Question: There was an awesome drive-in type restaurant in an old ice cream stand called GT Rocks- is it still open? How about Zebb's?

We decided not to go back to Ontario for Christmas, ONLY because "we never knew what weather would wait for us in Buffalo". LOL! Meanwhile, my parents, just outside of Toronto, have no snow - and they are about 1 hour away. Ironic that most Americans think Canada is the place with all the snow.

Hey - I grew up in Buffalo, and definitely have a list of must-gets everytime I go back, including Weber's mustard, Bison Chip Dip and Anchor Bar Wing sauce (though that's around here now). Friends of mine stock up on the Sahlen's hot dogs, but I'm not a big hot dog fan. We also always eat at Duffs once per trip, and sometimes Anderson's and Ted's... when we were younger we could handle all that meat (& grease) but now it's harder. I'm salivating now just thinking about all the goodies.

P.S. My bro sent a box of Truffaloes from Watson's for Christmas this year... yummy chocolates shaped like Buffaloes. Needless to say they are gone.

Hi from Rochester ... Freddy's was bought out by Vix. There's still some good deals to be had but in general it's a junky store.

Thought I'd mention that we just have an inch or so of snow. We've sent lots of snows to help Buffalo dig out. We were in Buffalo on XMas day and the day after, when there was "only" 2 feet of snow on the ground. We got out before the heavy stuff hit!

Happy New Year to you all!

Your post was timed perfectly - today on the Food Newtowrk, i had just been watching an episode of their"Unwrapped" series. The episode featured soda pop. Anyway, they provided a website where you can order lots of kinds of soda - unusual ones especially. I remembered them talking about a hot ginger ale with a pink cap. The website is www.sodapopstop.com

I stopped by their site and shipping is expensive, but it seems like a cool site. Anyway - they have a different brand of the hot ginger ale but they have it (in medium and very hot!)
