View Full Version : Please educate me!
This morning I typed up a recipe for Sophia which called for Texas Toast. I have never heard this term and my usual resources for information came up dry.
Please educate this poor, ignorant soul!

Texas toast refers to a loaf of white bread that is cut into slices at least an inch thick. I guess it wouldn't have to be white bread, though that's the only way I've ever seen it. The defining feature is that the slices are "as big as Texas."

That makes sense. Thanks for filling me in. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
Well, darn it! I couldn't believe Gail needed educatin', and soomeone done beat me to it, with the right answer even.
I don't know why Gail, but it seems you find these super fat slices of white bread (never seen it any other way) in those restaurants that are somewhere between fast food and white tablecloths, and, on occassion, in certain grocery stores. When served as toast, it's usually buttered, then grilled or pan toasted rather than the other way around. My son would tell you it's cowboy toast.

Thanks so much for this info. I remember reading that recipe and wondered what in the world Texas toast was. Then I forgot about it until Gail mentioned it here. Good to know.

Texas Toast is all over the place - it is basically a loaf of bread thickly sliced - comes in white or whole wheat - we even have it here in Toronto and have for many years - we all learn something everyday - particularly from this site - it's great!
