Any suggestions of a side dish or salad to take to a neighborhood octoberfest. It has to appeal to many ages, hold up for several hours without being refrigerated (although I do have the pyrex dish and cold pack). I hesitate to use veggies and dips after viewing the "double dipping" problem on Seinfeld.

How about marinated vegetables? You take whatever veggies you like (I've used celery, all colors of bell peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, zucchini, yellow squash, seeded cucumber, etc)and cut them in bite size pieces. Put in large tupperware type container and pour low-fat italian dressing plus 1 packet of dry italian dressing mix over vegetables, mix well and refrigerate overnight. You can either stir the mixture occasionally or, if you have it in a container with a tight fitting lid, you can just keep turning the container over.
Another one would be Taffy Apple Salad. It really tastes like taffy apples! Here's the recipe:
4 large red apples (peeled, seeded and diced just before using}
1 8oz can crushed pineapple
1 8oz container Cool Whip
1 cup salted peanuts
1 egg
1T flour
1/2 cup sugar
2T apple cider vinegar
First -
In small saucepan over medium flame until thick (whisking as it cooks):
juice from can of pineapples
1 egg (stirred before putting in pan)
2T apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1T flour
When thick, regrigerate for 1/2 hr
Secondly -
Mix apples (peeled, seeded, and diced) with 1 cup of peanuts and the drained crushed pineapples.
Third -
After mix has cooled for 1/2 hr (from #1), blend with spoon only with the Cool Whip.
Lastly (if I haven't lost you yet!) -
Mix the Cool Whip mixture with the apple mixture and refrigerate (best overnight).
Hope this helps. Have a great time!
