Can anybody please tell me where to buy crystallized ginger? I'd like to make the Gingered Pear Tart from the October issue. Thank you in advance!

Hi Krista,

I've found crystallized ginger either with the spices (in jars, like McCormick), or in the Asian food section of the grocery store. Albertson's and Safeway have carried it in the past, or you could also try an ethnic market if there is one in your vicinity.

Good luck! --Carrie

Hi,

I've found crystallized ginger in health food stores but I've also found it in the bulk spice sections of grocery stores for less money.

I even found some last holiday season at Wal-Mart, and bought a bunch. That was the cheapest I found.

I was surprised but pleased to find that
wal-Mart had last Holiday season not only the crystallized ginger but also candied fruits, baking powder, vanilla, and a lot of other things that come in handy for Holiday baking. And their prices were really reasonable.

Just thought I'd pass this on to you.

Do any of you know how do you mince crystalized ginger?

Christine: I guess I just answered your question in the MasterCook thread. I just chop it finely with my chef's knife. It sticks a little, but not excessively. I guess one could sprinkle a little sugar on it which I think would have the same effect as using a little salt does when mincing garlic.

Thank you for your suggestions! I am heading out on my quest for the crystallized ginger in a few minutes. Can't wait to make the tart!

Just saw it at our local health store (bulk section). Mine in the cupboard is chinesse.

For Christine
If you have a hand crank meat grinder it does the trick!

I went to three stores tonight and couldn't find it anywhere! I went to Trader Joe's, Henry's (a health food store) and Vons, although I forgot to check the Asian foods section. I bought all the pears for the tart so I guess I better head to Albertsons. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

If you've tried everywhere suggested and still come up empty, both The Spice House and Penzey's carry it.

Got some recently at our fancy-schmancy grocerama in the cake/choc. chip/baking section. It's by The Ginger People, little tin was $4-something, PRECHOPPED!! They have a cute web site, w/recipes (and a little chubby dancing finger of ginger!) and ordering info on all kinds of gingery stuff--gingerpeople.com. Very tasty stuff!

One more lead: our local Ralphs had it in the spice section.

I didn't get the chance to look for it yesterday or today because I had to work late http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif . I'll try Ralph's and Albertsons later in the week. Thanks for the tips!

Krista,
I noticed in your profile that you're down in the same part of the country that I am. If you're still not having much luck, I'm almost positive that you should be able to find some crystallized ginger at the 99 Ranch Market.
