For all you "Good Eats" fans -- Alton Brown will be writing an article for Cooking Light's May issue! I don't know what it will be about -- but I can't wait to find out!

That is so cool! I love his show - his explanations of ingredients are so thorough that I always learn something new. And his recipes are usually very good. I can't wait to see the article! I hope it is true! Yippee!

So does anyone else think he looks like Thomas Dolby? I love him, and it is one of the few cooking shows DH= will watch!
Peggy- Now that you mention it, he does look like Thomas Dolby!!
I can't wait for his article--that guy is just too awesome!! Cute, funny AND he can cook!!! :)

Peggy,
How funny! I had Good Eats on one night over the holidays and DH walked in the room and said "Hey, what's Thomas Dolby doing on your cooking channel?". Then he started watching it with me and was really happy that there is another host that he can stand. He hates Emeril (I must confess that I kinda like him - how can you resist someone who has so much enthusiasm for cooking?) and Mario Batali is starting to annoy him. I adore Mario. Really want to check out one of his restaurants in New York. DH keeps threatening to buy me orange kitchen clogs.

That's so exciting.
I wonder what type of food he'll be featuring??
He's so dreamy. ;)

"She blinded me with science!" Every hear that song? 80's amusement.
Yes I too love Alton Brown! Can't get enough of him quite frankly. When is his cookbook coming out? I want to enjoy him in bed ;)... The book that is! :D

Oh me, oh my! Waiting until May will be a killer!
By the way, what's the deal with Good Eats? It seems it's only on 1 or 2 nights a week. Is this right, or is my cable just weird? It's like going through withdrawal...only twice a week - I can't bear it!

Unfortunately, your information is correct. "Right" it is not. :( I'm of the view that there ought to be more "host variety" on FoodTV than there is now. I understand that Emeril has his fans, but why does it seem that he's ALWAYS on the air?
I, for one, can hardly wait for Alton's cookbook! (Anybody know when it's coming out?)

For all of you AB fans who haven't found his website yet, it's at www.altonbrown.com. The book is supposed to come out in April and a booksigning tour is supposed to start in May. The website says they'll post his schedule when it's available.
His show is on a pretty set schedule but you sort of have to almost program yourself to remember it. *IF* there is a new show, it almost always airs at 9:00 on Wednesday evenings. They repeat that show at midnight of the same day. The rest of the schedule looks something like this:
Saturday's - 9:00 p.m.
Sunday's - 12:00 a.m and 6:30 p.m.
Monday's - 3:30 a.m. - Cable in the Classroom (I'm not sure if they show this every week)
Wednesday's - 1:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
It's taken me at least 2 years to remember the Saturday and Sunday timeframes. If I'm in the house, I'll usually turn on FoodTV just so I can watch a rerun.
He has a group of new shows coming up starting tonight. In case anyone is interested:
1/ 9 - Scrap Iron Chefs - Bacon Challenge
1/16 - Deep Purple (eggplant)
1/23 - Cheesecake
1/30 - Squid Pro Quo
2/ 6 - Squash Court
2/13 - Art of Darkness II: Cocoa
2/27 - For Whom the Cheese Melts
3/13 - Amber Waves of Grain (it shows a beer mug)
3/37 - Send in the Clams

Thanks Melman for the info on programs. I seem to enjoy A.B. even on topics I'm not really interested in (i.e. squid!) What a guy!
And, although I like Emeril, I agree there should be a little more variety on FoodTV. But, like mom always said, beggers can't be choosers.

I have to admit I like emeril also, I don't really care for Mario, but love his clogs.
 NOT!
And have to admit that I don't like Martha, but also can't seem to turn her off! Verry weird, her show must be filled with subliminal messages!

You too? Actually, I leave her on for comedic purposes. Apparently, she doesn't understand how funny her tight a(*^% ways are. Or the sublimanal messages could be making me do it! Too funny!:D

Do you notice how everything is "PERFECT!" all the time. Maybe that is the word she has hypnotized us with so we watch :)

Pammy and Molli you are not alone! My all time favorite Martha-ism was the time that she was cooking with honey and said (with a straight face) that it was from her own hives but that any honey would do!!!:p

Melman: Thanks so much for the info on new episodes and the heads up for tonight. Whew! I've been missing episodes lately, and just can't seem to remember to tape them. Tonight I'm set to reform my slacker ways. ;)

And don't forget www.goodeatsfanpage.com . Started by a devoted AB fan, it appears he has the support of both Alton & the Food Network for his site! He seem's to have the heads up on when & which new episodes will be airing. There's also a full transcript of each and every show - something quite useful given the amount of information Alton covers in each show.
Now, of course, I'm thinking about "Blinded me with (food) science"!

I actually thought it was pretty funny, especially the end when AB did the voice over for everyones reviews.
Melman
01-10-2002, 08:02 AM
I loved the 'voice overs'. It was perfect! How many of you KNEW that Prairie Momma (whatever they called her) would win regardless of the bad reviews of her stew??
It was an entertaining show..not one of my favorites though. I guess I sort of rate his shows based on whether I'll actually try any of his recipes. I have to admit, the final product (the bacon in the oven, specifically) looked really good.
Peggy C.
01-10-2002, 08:06 AM
Oh, without a doubt I knew Prairie woman would win. I loved it when AB's voice says "Ah, but the belly stew was hmmm crap"
Melman thanks for posting the new show schedule!

Karole, it's on at 9 eastern time. Sorry you misunderstood. The episode that aired then will be rerun at 6:30P eastern time this coming Sunday.

I am pregnant and suggested Alton as a name, got vetoed.
I love him. His turkey brine is my holiday staple, now. My turkey is always perfect thanks to him.
I burned out on Emeril and Mario is always putting pasta INSIDE pastry and it is just TOO MUCH. No wonder he is such a big guy.
Alton is perfect, in my book. Sense of humor - does new things, but nothing too "out-there" for me to try and also goes back to revisit the basics and help me be a better all-around cook. I finally bought cast iron pans, thanks to him and I love them.

I also bought an ice cream maker b/c of one of his shows...
Do you think he gets a kick back from the gadget makers?
SusanT
01-10-2002, 11:31 AM
Not only do I buy the gadgets (well, most of them) that Alton uses, I bought a new pair of glasses a few months ago and the next time I watched the show, I realized my new frames looked almost exactly like his!
Don't have any Hawiian shirts yet....

Isn't it amazing?? Alton is responsible for many new aquisitions in my kitchen, including:
Red Jomac Welding Gloves
Salt Celler for Kosher Salt
Tetsubin Teapots
Magnum Pepper Mill
Looking forward to the new season:D .

Wow Portia, you've picked up some of his really cool tools!!!
I've purchased either a) because I liked what he said about them, or b) because they looked like the just had to be in my kitchen:
* cast iron skillet
* those little blue rubbery things that he uses to roll garlic out of its skin and that can be used to open jars
* salt cellar
* I already had the pushup measuring cup
* I was in the market for a new blender and selected it after hearing him critique about 3 of them
* nonstick skillet (but...it was also a very good deal at Bed, Bath & Beyond
* a wonderful new set of cutlery...I've been wanting a new set since he did the show where he featured those knife sharpener people who ride around in a van and go house-to-house
* his ice cream showed pushed me into the PURCHASE category...but I selected the Cuisinart based on recommendations of this board
* umpteen-eleven spices...entirely from Penzey's. If AB cooks with it, I figure I need to have it in case I make one of his recipes!!! I'm such a groupie.
* I learned that probe thermometers can be used to assist with the safe thawing of turkeys (when the thermometer beeps at 34 degrees or whatever, it's getting close to the risky category. Don't quote me on that number. It's in the turkey transcript.)
* I know there are others...I'm almost certain I've seen every single show
The thing I'm hoping someone will design one day is smellavision!! I cannot believe how often I can almost smell the things that he's cooked!!! :-)
(And I hope this posts...I couldn't post all day!!!)

Daney, should you override the veto on Alton for a name...please make sure you have a boy! My mother thought it would be nice to name me after both parents - ie Martha Alton...but the Martha was dropped along the way. I always know when I am getting junk mail if it is addressed to Mr.....

Even though I have been to culinary school and cook for a living, I truly am devoted to the show. I learn something new every time. Besides that, I actually laugh out loud with some of this corny jokes! I like Emeril but Alton is wonderful!
