Mine is a 6 qt Fagor Duo, and I'm crazy about it! I like the idea of having a dual pressure setting if I need it. It's a perfect size, and easy to clean!
I think the Kuhn Rikon is supposed to be the Beemer of pressure cookers, but I didn't like the style or the fact that most of them still have the 'weight' thingy. Fagor has all that built into the handle! I also heard icky things about Presto, Mirro, T-Fal and Farberware. Mine was $72! After seeing a pot of my Navy Bean and Ham Soup ready in 18 minutes, that's a bargain at any price! :D

Jewel - are you saying that a soup made with dried navy beans was ready in 18 minutes!?!? Me thinks I'll have to get one of the things. Cooking beans at high altitudes can be time consuming, but that would be great!

Yep, she said 18 minutes :D. I made black bean soup in 12 minutes the other night. It was the first time I'd cooked beans w/the Fagor (I can't remember which Fagor I have, not the duo, though) and I just knew they'd be undercooked, but they weren't. This thing is a miracle. I made the lentil soup w/ham and greens (Jan/Feb 02) last night in around 10 minutes. If you don't have one, go buy one now!!!!

I don't have a pressure cooker, and after all the talk lately I HAVE to have one! I don't really NEED advice-but, this is a good deal isn't it??
Fagor "Rapida" 6-qt. pressure cooker AND a free glass lid for $49.99
It's normally $69.99, and the lid is an additional $15......I should get this shouldn't I??
Umm, I think I just answered my own question, lol.. I should get this puppy asap, right?!
Thanks, :) Zinnia

JC Penney's is the place, and I will be there waiting for the door to open, lol! I hope there are some left! I shoulda bought it last Sunday when I saw the flyer in the Sunday paper..
I am so excited-and I hope there is one waiting for me, :) Zinnia
Just make sure that you know that the beans need to be pre-soaked to be done in 18 minutes. This caused me lots of anguish until I realized when everyone said they would be done so fast and mine were still hard that the problem was I wasn't pre-soaking!!! Also definately make sure you get a good one with a heavy bottom...mine is too thin and it burns easily! I'm going to look into a heat diffuser to see if that helps to buy myself a little more time until I upgrade!

Be sure to check if the Fagor Rapida has the RACK! I have 2
Splendid, they both have the trivet and rack. Without the rack you can't steam your veggies. Of course you can send for it from the distributor in NJ, as an additional cost.
I also bought 2 extra rubber rings, to keep in the event that the old ones start to leak. (my experience with Presto over the years)
These rubber rings are not available in the local stores.
Another tip: Ever so often, depending how much you use your pressure cooker, OIL (with vegetable oil) the inside of the rubber ring (the outside which faces the pot. It will preserve it and keep it from drying out.
I found using the fast method soaking your beans, (cover with boiling water for 1 hour) works well before you pressure cook your dried beans.

Would the 6 qt be big enough for a family of 4 that like to eat??I have been thinking of asking for the Fagor 6qt that Jewel talks about, but I like to have leftovers. My old pressure cooker is a Presto. It's handy but I do have to replace the rubber gasket a lot. A vacuum cleaner store carries them.Think I'll go look at Penny's.

I got a Kuhn Rikon for Christmas last year and I love it! (I had no idea how much they cost - about three times what I expected.)
The one drawback is that I moved to Maryland and now own an electric range and it is very difficult to control the settings (this applies to all my cooking, however).
After 7 years using a gas range, this has been quite a challenge for me, especially using a pressure cooker, as the settings & temperatures change depending on how many burners/ovens I'm using at one time.
I guess it's time to buy a new range/oven.
Good luck!

COOKINATOR: Yes, I think the 6qt fagor will be big enough. I bought my 6qt when I still had a 4qt Presto. (I had 2 of them before). I know what you mean about the rubber gaskets in them. I have not yet changed mine in the fagor, and I have had them since 1999! GO FOR IT!
