After much research, looking around at the department stores and reading all the threads on this board about cookware, I decided that it was AllClad or nothing for me. KChan mentioned in a prior thread that she has seen pieces at Marshall's and TJMaxx (thanks KChan!), so I was a woman on a mission! :D Well, after trips to two TJ Maxx stores, I am now the proud owner of the following pieces. I've also listed the price I paid for each piece.

Stainless 10" frypan $34.99
Stainless 2 quart saucepan w/lid $44.99
Stainless 3-1/2 quart saucepan w/lid $69.99
Ltd 3 quart saute pan w/lid $99.99

I also picked up a Calphalon commercial nonstick 8" omelet pan on clearance for $22.00. I checked the prices of all the pieces I bought at www.outletsonline, which laughslandlaughs and LauraB mentioned in a prior cookware thread, and the prices I paid were a good bit cheaper than their prices. Granted, all the pieces I bought are labelled "irregular," but that means a very small scratch here and there (nothing dented) and certainly things I can live with considering the savings.

Marshall's and TJMaxx each had some pieces of Le Creuset at what seemed to be pretty good prices too.

I'm so excited with my new toys! I can't wait to use them.

So, all you cookware experts, how'd I do?
;)

Great deal! I have bought some pieces at TJ Maxx as well. I am always hesitant to buy All-Clad online since you can't inspect the cookware for defects, etc. I wound up buying a 7 piece stainless steel All-Clad set from Bloomingdale's- when they are having a sale along with the 20% coupon in the Bloomies flyer, the price can't be beat! Plus you get the All-Clad promotional items as well.
I just bought their circular grill pan and love it. Just be careful with using their metal utensils- I scratched my first pan!

Excellent prices!! I've been pricing some of those same pieces at Williams-Sonoma. I have several gift certificates I'm getting ready to use there, so I'll go for the bigger price this time. After I spend the gift certificates, I'll be hanging out at our local Marshall's and TJMaxx as well. I've seen some great prices at both stores on All Clad.

By the way, I checked the Williams-Sonoma outlet store, too. Their prices are a little better than the mall stores though nothing like you found. I'll probably spend my gift certificates at both places...see what's available at the outlet store and then spend the rest at the main store.

OH YEAH!! All Clad has a coupon special going on right now. You should qualify. The coupon says "If you spend $150 on All-Clad products, we'll show our appreciation by sending you a coupon for $25, to be applied toward your next All-Clad purchase of $100 or more from the same retailer." It doesn't limit the store or type of store. Go to your local mall store that carries All-Clad and see if they have a coupon lying around. I've seen these things in quite a few places. You need the sales receipt and the UPC code from the All-Clad purchases. The coupon must be postmarked by January 31.

on your trips, did you notice if they carry the kuhn rikon pressure cookers???

I got my all-clad from a restaurant whole-saler...not sure if he accidently gave me his whole-sale price list, but said these are the prices and we charge 10% over that....boy did I buy a lot!
You still may have gotten a better deal...I'll have to compare my whole-sale list.
And who cares if they're irregular...after my DH gets through washing stuff, that's what they end up as anyway :D

The TJMaxx & Marshall's nearest to us aren't very good - small, older stores that haven't been remodeled in quite some time. So, we rarely go there for anything. Yes, there are better stores within reasonable driving distance (half an hour or so), but we never think about it!

May I also suggest EBay. Several months back, I picked up several new pieces of Calphalon at great prices, none of which dissappointed me; I'd also noticed very good prices on All-Clad. I did stick to several self-imposed rules for the sellers:

- item must be labeled "new in box"
- seller must have numerous positive reviews and no more than 2 negative reviews in the last month
- adequate description of the item, picture a plus
- significantly discounted price from suggested retail

Wow, those are GREAT prices. How exciting! I'm sure you will enjoy them.

I have just started looking online for some specials on ALLCLAD as well. The best deal I have found is at Crate and Barrel for their MasterChef Line. They are selling the 8 piece set for $319, but your pieces at TJ MAX and MARSHALL's beat that deal!!!

Here is the link for anyone who might be interested if they don't have TJ MAX and MARSHALL's near them....

I was wondering, has anyone has had experience with this MasterChef line????? I really want the Stainless Steel set, and have been wondering the differences in the two lines.

all of mine are the Masterchef line. I preferred the brushed aluminum because I didn't want to worry about water spots and keeping it sparkling. Only bad thing is, they recommend not to use in dishwasher because the bleach in the detergent can darken the outside. I prefer to hand-wash the big pots/pans anyway so I didn't care.
The Masterchef line is also a few dollars cheaper....which, if you're buying a sh_ _load, like I was, it added up....:D

Wallycat-

Thanks for the quick reply, and for enlightening me on the MasterChef line. They both sound like a good choice. I know one choice I have already made, and that is that I want to save up for ALLCLAD. Now, I just have to decide which line.....I still have a few months until I will make the purchase, and when we move home for good, I will be sure to check out TJ MAX and MARSHALL's(thanks to KCHAN AND BARRIE.)

Forgot the most important reason why I selected the Masterchef line...the sizes of the pots/pans vary!!
They may have changed all of this now, but when I was looking to buy, for example a saucepan in the stainless steel line was a 2-1/2 quart while a 3 quart was available in the Masterchef line. I wanted the slightly larger size, so I ended up getting the masterchef....but....

There's nothing wrong with mixing and matching your lines...like I'm planning to buy the Windsor pan (why--not sure, but it sure is cute!) and it's only made in the stainless line...but who cares.
It's not like socks and shoes...cookware doesn't HAVE to match :D .
I'm mixing my colors for Le Creuset as well....:D

I don't know about when you bought yours, Wallycat, but the stainless line definitely has both a 2-quart and a 3-quart saute pan now. I know because I have the 3-Qt and lust after the 2-Qt. :D I am saving my pennies for the 2-Qt. I am determined to have it for myself by my birthday in April!

I probably spent way too much time debating which line of cookware to buy but in the end went with the All-Clad and love it! In particular, I chose the stainless steel line, partly because you could put it in the dishwasher. The only SS that you can't put in the dishwasher is the nonstick ones. After a long day at work followed by making dinner, I am so glad when I can put the SS in the dishwasher and wake up the next morning with them clean and ready to go! I decided to go with Calphalon bakeware because I didn't think there was much difference(except in price!) between the All Clad and Calphalon. Anyone have any thoughts on bakeware?

More All-Clad options for us All-Clad junkies... :)

The twice-a-year (June & December) factory sale in Meadowlands, PA... PLUS a new All-Clad OUTLET just opened up in the Grove City Factory Outlets (about 35 minutes from me!) Now THAT is a big WOO HOO!!!

I haven't been there yet, but my sister says the prices are GOOD! Not as good as the factory sale, but better than regular retail, and the items are all first quality.

So I am thinking that there are probably other outlets, too... I can't imagine Grove City is the only one?!

Question for ALL CLAD users: Do the handles stay cool?

wallycat
01-13-2002, 08:42 PM
the long handles do, for the most part...unless I have my 15,000BTU on full blast. The small handles (on each side) that are shorter always get hot...even the top handle of the lids get hot.:(

OK - since we are speaking of all clad - I have a question.

I got my very lovely 10 pc SS set for Christmas. (Does my mommy love me or what?) But, to my horror - I accidently let my rice suck up a little too much of of the chick broth I was cooking it in the other night. These pots heat much better than anything else I have ever used - so I cooked it for the same amount I always did - but it was a wee little bit too long. It didn't burn - but we had a little sticking going on. (I swear I almost cried.)

So, we got the pot clean - but it had this funky discoloration on the inside bottom - I guess from the heat. So, I ordered that Barkeeper's friend - I figure I need it with the SS pots anyway - but please please please tell me it will make my pot almost perfect.

I am so careful with these pots - it is sad. I have to convince myself not to wash them before I eat. So, please tell me what I want to hear!!

Janet -

That's exactly what the Barkeepers Friend will do. It's great stuff.

All-clad instructions also indicate that when higher heat is used, the metal will turn a bluish...also if you add salt prior to adding food, it may pit ever so slightly....they say this will not affect performance of the pans.

I was a nervous nellie when I first got mine, but i'm getting better about them...after all, they're just pans. I was a devil with my revere ware and they lasted forever...I had to GIVE them away in perfect condition....and all-clad is made so much better, they should last even longer.
Enjoy your pans....worst thing that could happen is you'll have to replace one.:D

Wow! I haven't checked the boards all day and I was shocked at all of the responses to my little cookware thread! For some reason this makes me think of Sally Field accepting her Oscar - "You like me, you really like me!"

Melman - thanks for the info on the rebate. I'm pretty sure that I won't qualify for it because none of the pieces I purchased came in a box. And no box = no UPC code. :(
But I'm hardly complaining, I think I did pretty well anyway!
