Just voicing my boredom this evening. My SO is an avid football fan, so I fled to my parents' for the weekend because I figured there would be more to do here. Wrong. Dad is perched on the couch for the evening. The Raiders are playing now. Before that it was the Bucs. Tomorrow is the Packers, which, being from Wisconsin, is a major event. They might as well proclaim it a holiday, because even the church services end earlier if the Pack plays at noon.

I am sitting in our office, and there are printouts of divisional playoff announcements and "if they win, they play them" scenarios. I CAN'T GET AWAY FROM IT!!!!!!!

Is there anyone else out there that can empathize? Just need an ear this evening.

Thanks,
Jennifer

I understand your resentment...I used to hate football and everything about it. It was such a boring game, and people get SOOO wrapped up in it!

I have to confess, however, that I was roped into playing women's football in college, and ever since then, I have been a die-hard fan of the game. I finally understood the strategy behind it, so it became fun to watch.

But even though I love it now, I do remember how it felt to be surrounded by people who were entranced by the TV! All I can say is that soon it will be over...the Superbowl is in a few weeks, and then you'll get your SO back.

;)
Till then, I can recommend some good books to pass the time...

Wow, can I sympathize or what?! I swear, I married my husband becasue he knew NOTHING (and I mean NOTHING) about sports when we met, and I came from a sports-fanatic household. But guess what happened...he got hooked on football and now he and my dad & brother get together every weekend for the "Football Follies" where my mom and I just shake our heads and sigh.

I guess I have the last laugh, though -- I coach a competitive high school cheerleading team and go to either a basketball or football game at least twice a week. DH comes to the football games to watch -- he's a very patient "cheerleading widow" so I guess I can't complain too much about his football addiction.

How many more days until the Superbowl?

I guess I'm lucky, because even thought my DH likes football, he is only really hooked if his home team(New York) plays. And this applies to baseball as well.

I just wish the games we're during the day so I could go shopping!!! Too bad they lost last night, he was not very happy.

OMG, can I relate! When DH and I were dating, we used to do interesting things on the weekends, and the football schedule hardly ever entered into it.

After we got married, however .... he apparently decided he had sacrificed enough of one love (football), for another (me!), and said that during football season, he wanted to spend Sundays watching the games. I can't stand football -- so this became a problem. :(

Our compromise -- we would schedule our Sundays around the Giants game, since he is a die-hard Big Blue fan since childhood. (See -- after 12 years, I've even learned their nickname!). But, he agreed the other games would be "optional," depending on whether there was something I wanted to do.

That has worked really well for us -- of course, last year we moved to Boston, and we don't get all the Giants games on TV here (unless we get a satellite dish, which he's talked about ... ). So, more Sundays for me! ;) I just gotta hope he doesn't become a Patriots fan.

I used to tell everyone the very best weekends of the year were "the Sunday night game, Monday night football, and the "by" week" -- meaning the three weekends the Giants did not play during the day!

Unfortunately, my best girlfriend back in NJ was also an avid football fan, so she'd never be available for shopping, movies, etc. on Sundays, either.

Now I'm going to rant for a minute:

One thing that irks me about football fans, and my friend was particularly guilty of this: you tell them you don't like football, and they start going on and on about how you would like it if you understood the game, and here, it will only take a minute to explain what's happening .... (I'm not referring to Rebecca's comment -- she seems very understanding and sympathetic ... :) )

But I'm not interested in the game, never have been and don't care to be interested in the future. I don't try dragging these folks into the kitchen to explain how they'd love to make chocolate mousse if only they understood the concept behind it ...

Well, enough. However, I don't mind sticking to the TV during baseball season ... Go Mets! :D

Actually, I enjoy watching football! NFL only, however- I never got into college sports. Even though my team (Buffalo Bills) was pathetic this year, I still watch in hopes that someday they'll pull off the "big one!"

My husband is actually the widower in this household... when it comes to HOCKEY!! I'm an absolute hockey nut and will watch no matter who's playing. He's coming around and has gotten into the game somewhat since he met me. Taking him to an NHL game helped him realize how cool the game is (no pun intended).

Helene, I love your comment about cooking. Yeah, I've heard more than once that "if only I understood the game" I would appreciate it. Well, it gets even better. We are a football family. My uncle played for U. of Wisconsin. In fact he was in the Rose Bowl. He then went to the pros. Played for the Rams and the Steelers. My dad played for U. of Illinois. Football is huge. I just can't stand the yelling, etc. I'm getting a headache right now because the Packers are playing and my dad and brother are yelling at every call. Mom and I are about to retreat to the antique shop just for a breath of air.

And, not to say I don't like sports. I like playing. I'm just not a good spectator. I LOVE volleyball. Can't get enough of it.

I also understand football well enough.

Anyway, I don't think there's any beating this beast. :)

I can relate as well! In our household it is football and hockey. I am a fan, and can root for our teams when they are playing, but I can't sit there for 8 hours watching every game!!

My DH is not very happy about this situation...
I am an artist, and have some work in an exhibit right now. The opening reception is this Saturday from 5-8pm... well, the Eagles play at 4:30. He is very upset that he won't be able to watch the game!!!

Ahhh, another reason I'm so glad I live alone!! Football will never be permitted to be watched in my house! My BF is a fan (both football and basketball) and I hardly see him some weekends but I could care less, as long as he's not watching it at my house and I don't have to see/hear it.

I can't tell you how many events or parties he's forced me to leave early because some big game is on- drives me crazy!
