These are the two I use:
Sauce I
2 tbs shortening (Crisco)
4 tbs flour
2 cups boiling water
4 tbs chili powder
salt to taste
Melt shortening and add the flour gradually to form a smooth paste. Add the remaining ingredients. Simmer for at least 30 min. Yields approx. 2 cups of sauce
Sauce II 1/2 c vegetable oil
1/2 cup flour
3 cups hot water
Salt and pepper to taste
6 tbs chili powder
1/2 tsp cumin
1/4 t garlic powder
1 lb. ground beef, browned
Heat oil. Gradually add the flour to form a smooth paste. Add the hot water and seasonings. Simmer 30 minutes and add beef.
Yields approx. 4 cups of sauce.
The longer you cook both sauces the richer the flavor.
