Yes, this is a random question. And, yes, I am actually back after months of non-posting. Patty's great news brought me out of lurkdom a couple of days ago and now I have a question for all you wonderful people in bbland. I have been having back and shoulder pains and my physical therapist suggests I get the kind of pillow that has an indentation for the head. Do you know what I am talking about? The pillow curves in where the head should rest so the neck is supported. Does anyone have a suggestion as to a particular brand? TIA. I missed you all!

I'm sorry I have no advice on the pillow. I just wanted to say it's good to see you back on the BB, and I hope things are going ok for you now. Take care of yourself! :)

Try the Tempurpedic (SP?) pillow that they sell at Brookstone. I've heard it's a little pricey, but very good for you.

I just bought a "contour" pillow at Bon Ton (an upper-end department store). It was on sale from $40 down to $24.99, and I REALLY like it. I don't think they are really very hard to find, you just probably haven't noticed them before. If you get one from a durable medical supplier, I have heard they are like $100!

I have a Tempupedic (got through a physical therapist) and another that I got at Linens and Things. They have the same shape, but one is taller than the other and one is firmer than the other. They both respond to your body weight and heat to mold and support your head and neck. They are kind of wave shaped, and smaller than a regular pillow. I cannot sleep with anything else now, and I find that some nights one feels better than the other. I think Brookstone now carries them in larger sizes that are more like normal bed pillows.
As to a brand or anything, you really need to try it and see how it fits your neck and head. Keep the plastic on it and lay down with it -- on your bed if possible. It may take several tries and even a couple of different pillows to get what you need.

Tempurpedic pillows are great. They do come in several different sizes, so you may find that one size is more comfortable than others. By the way, we splurged on the tempurpedic mattress, and it's worth every penny.
I have wondered about those mattresses. When we bought our new one, they had just come out with mattress pads made of that type of material, but not beds. Sounds like a great idea -- just wish they'd done it a little sooner. How do they compare in price with conventional mattresses? Are they similar to the mid or upper lines, or even worse than that?

I think they are fairly similar in price to an upper line mattress (like Stearns & Foster). We paid around $1800 for our king-sized Tempurpedic. The foundations (like box springs) that go with them are fairly inexpensive, but we didn't need one as our bed doesn't require one. Yes, it's a lot of money, but it's the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on.

I appreciate the responses. It looks like the tempurpedic is the way to go!
KatherineY-thanks for the welcome. It really is great to be back.

Same here, we have been sleeping on our Tempurpedic mattress and pillows since September. Yes, is was expensive but I am sleeping sooo much better than ever in my whole life. I have always had insomnia problems and trouble getting comfortable, but this mattress is totally supportive and easy on my back. It does take a few nights to get used to, because it takes more effort to turn over, but I just love it. The pillows are awesome, too. It has been worth pinching pennies in other areas of our life to have this set up.
We were able to try the mattress out in a retail store before we bought it, otherwise I don't think my husband would have gone for it just by feeling a sample of the material. It's a very different sensation than a regular mattress.

After reading this and another thread about pillows a few weeks ago, I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond and spent $60 for an Isotonic pillow. It is just what I needed apparently. I have no neck stiffness or pain in the morning, and sleep much better all night. It looks just like the $100 Tempurpedic pillow they were also selling, and it even looks like the cheaper one that Target had. I don't know if it's the shape or the moldable material it's made from. I'm just really glad I read about it here.

Oh man, I read through this whole thread getting really excited that maybe Susann was back again...only to discover that most of the thread is 2 years old! And I was so looking forward to a 'Country of the Month" theme!
Jazzamatazz49,
Enjoy your new pillow. I take mine everywhere! Even carried one to Scotland and left it there with friends for my next visit! Pennies well spent!!
That's what I thought, too.
Hey, maybe we can rustle up some more interest in those Country of the Month things. I liked researching them and the fact that Susann didn't need all recipes to be light was helpful, too. I mean, I understand everyone around here wants to stay healthy, but some recipes just don't take well to being lightened.

I also have the Isotonic, about $50. Had it for several years now. Can't sleep without it and take it with when I travel.

DH got me one for Christmas last year and I love it. I generally see the chiropractor every 6 weeks for a maintenance adjustment, and I still do, but feel much better in between. I don't have the knotted back muscles or stiff neck in the meantime like I used to. I would definitely recommend one!

You're going to cook it, you mean? If you're serious, let's start a new thread on the Good Food board on Monday. Dunno that I'll be here tomorrow.
I have been having neck problems and the chiropractor I see highly recommends awater pillow. You have alot of control over the firmness and shape apparently. he said there is no sloshing and it is the only way to go. I can't remember the brand....I may get one and I'll report back if I do.:)

We got the Tempurpedic bed with two free pillows. I love the bed, but the pillow makes my neck hurt more. I think it's just too high for me. I'd need to have one that kept the back of my head maybe 1/2" - 1" off the bed. I use a feather pillow right now.

I didn't realize I resurrected a two-year-old thread! I searched for "pillow" because I remembered a thread recently. Whatever, I do love my new pillow. And the Country of the Month sounds fun...
