View Full Version : What sprouts legs in your house?
I just went around our house looking for a pair of scissors after my son was unable to finish a school project because he couldn't cut out parts of it. Now, I know I have bought at least 4 pair of scissors in the last year, not counting any for school supplies. And that was because DH and I were having a hard time keeping a pair of scissors where we could find them. Now, I think one pair did bite the dust, but we should still have enough scissors for everyone to have their own pair, one in the kitchen and a pair or two to spare. Where are they? Am I going to have to get homing devices for them?
What disappears in your house?

DH always wants to know where the car keys are!!:D :D :D
for me....hmmmm.....when I'm cooking, it's like i'm brain-dead...I take out the tongs because I know i'll need them...and then turn around to do something else...and oh, gosh...where are the tongs I'll need!!! I'm sure it's perimenopause brain, but I don't have to like it, do I????:o :o :o

The puppy's chewy (rawhide) sticks. I bought a huge bag of these and placed two on each floor of the house so they were always accessible to the puppy. Well they are always around when I'm trying to vacuum or just walking around the house. The minute I sit down and puppy jumps up on my lap and starts chewing on my finger I can never find one of those chewies!
Things with legs ...
Batteries
Light bulbs
Scotch tape
It seems like I'm constantly buying these items, because I know we'll need them -- but when we need them ... well, you know the drill.
The other things that disappear are the little furry mice that our kitten likes to play with -- but I know where those go -- under the refrigerator. (Every few days, DH retrieves a colony of furry mice...)

When I first saw the title of this post, I thought of the mice toys that our 2 cats play with-then I saw Helene's post about them too;). I go around the house with a flashlight on my hands and knees a couple of times a wk. searching for those darn things! If I don't, the cats won't get them and then they start playing with MY stuff!
Here are other ones that get up and walk away-
the remote, scissors, scotch tape, MY hairbrush, cellphone, hammer, flashlight, keys, shoes(:D)

In our house it is:
Scotch Tape
Pens, or any writing instrument
I can't tell you how many times I've searched through every drawer in our kitchen looking for a pen, and found none. Then I go upstairs to DD's room, and find about 15. She always picks them up when she's in the mood to draw something, forgetting that she already has a stash in her room!

Gosh, what doesn't??? :D
Just yesterday I COULD NOT find the ear drops for my DS. I looked EVERYWHERE and was determined to find them - the tiny little bottle cost $25! Finally found them in the shoe basket - but of course!
Ah, yes batteries- never could find them when we needed them. I finally went through all the places that we tend to stash them and moved them all to one place - we have quite a collection.
I actually read somewhere that one money saving tip is to organize everything - everything in its place and a place for everything. The author claimed that we spend quite a bit on buying things that we actually DO have in the house, if only we could find them. I'm a believer!!! We had multiple packs of the same kind of batteries and at least 5 or 6 containers of glue!
Other things that have legs - hair clips, scissors, pens, car keys, gloves, and many, many more I'm sure. Oh, and anything belonging to my boys - they are always playing and moving things around and then expect ME to know where everything is! :D

They never do outgrow that, do they?;)

The cordless telephone!
We have two - one upstairs and one downstairs. They never seem to make it back to their appointed cradles when telephone conversations are finished. The upstairs phone is often found downstairs, and vice versa. They end up all over the house - on the nightstands, next to the sofa, on the kitchen counter, in the bathroom  ?!? And of course, when the telephone rings, it's a race to actually locate a handset before the caller hangs up!
I got tape, keys and batteries under control (only because I limited the boys' access to tape), but I forgot about remote controls. We have had to buy two new ones. One has been missing a few weeks now, but the other has been gone for months. I wonder if it got "recycled" in a stack of newspapers.
The furry mice hide here too. However, they don't sprout legs so much as lose tails!
Lindrusso, I agree with getting organized, but there's one problem -- I live with three disorganizers as well as the two mouse hiders. Therein lies most of the problem. ;)

The checkbook!
My keys used to often be among the missing -- even though I have a special little "key bowl" on the kitchen counter (I'd still leave them in my coat pockets; in my purse, tote bag or briefcase; or even close the door with the keys still in the lock!)
DH got me this little device from Brookstone -- you attach a little "homing device" to your keychain (about the size of a car-alarm button). There's a "home base" on the kitchen counter. When you press a button on the "home base," the "homing device" on the keys begins to beep. If the keys are anywhere within earshot, you can track them down.
Now, if only I had something like that to help me find my car in a parking lot ...

Gee, I thought that's what the "panic" button on my keyless entry thingie was for... No, just kidding, but I have been tempted to set off the car alarm just so I could find thing.
DD1's shoes, sometimes DD2's shoes. The kitchen towel that is supposed to be handing on the oven door or just about anything else DD1 plays with.

I have a 'thing' drawer in my kitchen. Doesn't everyone? You know, that drawer that holds 'things' that don't usually go anywhere else? Pens, scotch tape, scissors, calculator, user manuals for the coffee maker and ice cream maker, recipes, thumbtacks, etc. Any time I have ever moved, I simply take the thing drawer out of one house (the actual drawer :D ) and take it to my NEW house, and dump everything in THAT 'thing' drawer. I know for a fact that if I remove items from that drawer, even to move to another house or apartment, they'll get lost! It used to help... but it doesn't seem to help much anymore!
I live with a Closet Klepto. DH can't use anything and put it back where it came from. I've told him that pens, tape, scissors, etc to back INTO that 'thing' drawer, but it doesn't seem to penetrate the third layer of the brain that controls 'returning items to place of origin...' Oh well, he's got a hairy chest, so I put up with the little stuff! :D

Nail files! This is, of course, my fault for NOT putting them back and just like those furry mice, I can find 4 or 5 files under the couch on any given day.
