I had promised to post a recipe for Oatmeal Cookies in a Jar for Kelly, and for some reason the site won't accept it. Kelly, I'd be glad to e-mail it to you: my address is jeanne.lafferty@pge-corp.com.

I would love to have your recipe for oatmeal cookies in a jar. I did notice in your threads that the recipe was requested. I also typed in a few of my own.
Thanks, Karen

Here is JeanneL's Oatmeal Cookies in a Jar recipe - it looks great!
Thank you for sending it to me Jeanne.
Farm-Style Oatmeal Cookies
These are the directions for making gift jars filled with the dry ingredients for oatmeal cookies. The ingredients are packed in the jar in layers - looks great and the cookies are good!
To Fill Jars:
1) use regular Mason quart jars (not wide-mouth)
2) pour all ingredients into large bowls if you're making several jars
3) wash and dry dry dry jars carefully (make sure jar is really clean and dry)
4) use Solo cups so you can pour from them and the rim will bend
5) bend an old large spoon to use for packing the ingredients in the jars
6) level each layer before adding the next
Layers:
1/2 cup white flour mixed w/ 1 teaspoon baking soda
pour into Solo cup (w/ rim bent)
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup light brown sugar (really pack into 1/2 cup measure)
loosen it up in Solo cup before you pour into mason jar; using a bent spoon or tiny ladle, press it down firmly after it's level, packing it
1/2 cup dark brown sugar (really pack into 1/2 cup measure)
loosen it up in Solo cup before you pour into mason jar; using a bent spoon or tiny ladle, press it down firmly after it's level, packing it
1 full cup old fashioned oats (not quick oats)
level contents
1 cup raisins
pour on top, then flatten out - push down a bit, carefully so oats don't show through raisins
1 full cup old fashioned oats (not quick oats)
level contents
Finishing the Jars:
1) Tightly screw on Mason lid
2) Cut fabric* into a circle about 71/2" in diameter (with pinking shears if you want a rick-rack affect)
3) Place fabric circle around jar lid with a rubber band
4) Cover rubber band with 3 or 4 strands of raffia and tie it in a bow (bow should about 4" across and have about 5" ends)
5) Tie a tiny wooden spoon** (about 5" inches long) to the back of the bow with the ends of the raffia, so the spoon hangs from the bow (you might need to poke a hole in the top of the spoon with - what else? - an ice pick!)
6) Prepare the instructions for finishing and baking the cookies***
7) After folding the instructions, punch a small hole in the top left corner and tie to the bow with the ends of the raffia
* check fabric stores for seasonal fabrics or remnants. Use Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Easter, 4th of July fabric, etc. You can also use cloth napkins or tablecloths, although they might be a bit more expensive. Shop Wal-Mart for cheap seasonal fabrics or Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, Ross, or Marshall's for inexpensive napkins and tablecloths.
** craft stores like Michael's and Ben Franklin carry these tiny spoons
*** for the directions to hang on the jar you want a one-fold small (about 21/2" x 31/2" folded) tag. You can use bordered printer paper or create your own borders using something like Print Shop. You can get several tags from an 81/2" x 11" page.
The front section of the folded tag reads: "Farm-Style Oatmeal Cookies" and in a bottom corner "By: [your name]". You can use clip art on the front as well (also found in Print Shop).
The inside sections can be used for either the baking instructions or your "to/from" greeting (I use the inside section for my greeting, since there's more room).
The back section can be used for whatever you didn't use the inside sections for.
Baking Instructions (use a very small font and abbreviate wherever you can):
Cream 1/2 cup of shortening, 1/4 cup milk & 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla together. Slowly add dry ingredients and mix together. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place about 3 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten cookies with bottom of glass dipped in water then sugar. Bake at 375( until golden brown (8 to 10 minutes). Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Makes about 3 dozen. Ingredients: Oats, Wheat & White Flours, Brown Sugars, Baking Soda, and Raisins.
