Ok,
I am on the lookout for low-carb breakfasts. Due to a heart condition I have to limit my intake of these. Apparently carbs along with caffine and sugar can trigger palpatations. I am looking for ideas away from the normal eggs, bacon etc. - for obvious reasons.
If anyone knows of any receipes I would greatly apreciate them!! Also, if any of you old timers know of any threads I can search I would love them as well. TIA!!! :)

Hi,
I have to wonder who told you that high carbs can trigger heart palpatations?? I am an RD and my husband is a heart doc and I have never heard that before!!
There are many different types of carbs and there is a big difference between pure sugar and whole grain carbs, as I am sure you know.
I know caffeine can trigger palpatations of course, but avoiding whole grains like whole wheat bread, oatmeal just doesn't sound right to me!

I don't have very many ideas, but I try to eat more protein than carbs in the morning. So my typical breakfast is non-fat yogurt, Cascade is sweetened with fruit juice as opposed to sugar, and some sort of fruit (this morning was lemon yogurt with blueberries mixed in). I've also been eating Kashi Lean which is a high protein, lower carbs cereal, with soy milk and a banana.

How about omlettes made with egg whites?
Shakes made with milk or yogurt and fruit (a common theme in my mornings...)?

Like I said, not very many ideas, but a few...

I was told by my cardiologist, I have been diagnosed with MVP, that pastas, rices and white breads can increase insulin levels in the blood and that can trigger heart palps. I have had two opinions on this matter and both have agreed. I wonder if I have to have a third??
I have found that by staying away from carbs, my heart "flips" have subsided greatly. Maybe it is all just in my mind, but it does seem to work.
Thanks for your response,
Melinda

Thanks Em for the tip on Cascade... I love yogurt, but try to stay away from sugar.

Mori-nu silken tofu has a web site...YOu can make scrambled "eggs" using the product that tastes quite good.

I also eat leftovers from dinner for breakfast and actually like it a lot!

Beans (refried or baked) are also quite tasty though some people may not find them a first choice for breakfast (I love them!!)

Also, when eating carbs, if you include a small amount of protein or fat (like peanut butter or low-fat cheese or yogurt) you decrease the glycemic index of the total meal and the carbs won't spike your glucose levels

Wow, that is very interesting. My mom has MVP, very common, but I had never heard about avoiding carbs before, it is true that white breads raise your insulin quicker than whole wheat, do you notice palpatations with whole wheat products too?
But hey if it works for you than that is great.

Suggestions for breakfast:
Soy bacon or sausage is good
Kashi as mentioned before is a higher protein/fiber cereal
Egg whites with veggies, spinach, mushrooms, etc, low fat cheese

No offense to anyone, but this discussion on low carbs is scary!
Wallycat is right on - I hope this is really about reducing GI, not reducing all carbs. Sugar and fruit juice are virtually the same thing.
The "Zone Diet" that you've probably heard about is all about choosing lower GI carbs (and not a high-protein diet as commonly thought) and balancing your blood sugar levels throughout the day - avoiding that high-GI "spike."
Keep researching!

No, this isn't about eleminating all carbs. As mentioned above, I was told that certain carbs can agravate my heart murmer, and as breakfast is traditionally carb loaded I was looking for alternatives.
Sherri - I only stay away from the refined sugar/white bread type of carbs. I do occasionally eat oatmeal for breakfast, but find that sometimes even that can be a problem. Whole wheat pasta and breads are still in the rotation though... Thanks for all of your advice!!! It is much appreciated!!!

It doesn't sound like you are cutting out all carbs and if you are still eating whole wheat that is great! Doesn't seem like it is a low carb diet at all....as I am sure we all know some carbs are better than others!
