View Full Version : Somewhat Food Related:Pregnancy Cravings
This talk about Mrs. Reber had me thinking about things I craved (or couldn't stand!) during pregnancy.
During my first trimester, I swear the only thing I could stomach was pizza, for some reason. I mean, my poor husband and I ate it almost every night! Then I'd eat the leftovers for lunch and also sometimes breakfast! I just couldn't stomach the thought of anything else.
The only other thing I craved were wings. I loved **hot** Buffalo wings, too! We always say our daughter is so wild because of all the hot sauce she ingested in-utero!
Chime in!

During my first trimester, I could not even LOOK at a tomato. Can you imagine trying to cook without tomatoes? They are usually a staple here. Of course, food altogether made me sick, so cooking was not really an issue.
After the first trimester, it was anything that was spicy. Mexican, Indian, Thai, I just needed a lot a flavor. Maybe my taste buds were deadened or something. Also, I had terrible craving for red meat. I have had vegetarian friends say that they went back to red meat during their pregnancies. Needless to say, I was low on iron!

I ate a greek salad with extra feta at least once a day, often take-out from the same restaurant. I usually included with my order hummus, a pita and a diet rootbeer. I bet I ate that every day for the last 5 months of my pregnancy.

Funny poll. The only thing I really couldn't deal with the first trimester, both times around, was raw chicken. The smell and the feel of it -- ick. Oh, and then there were the fish cakes we bought at the Asian market on a "what the heck, let's try 'em" whim. I had to run from the kitchen as soon as they hit the pan and I caught a whiff! The first pregnancy I craved french fries and ribs; second time around I didn't have any cravings, I just ate a LOT of everything. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

It's funny you should mention pizza. One night just a few days before I found out I was pregnant with my first son I was shopping at the mall and very suddenly had a craving for pizza. I stopped shopping, went home, and made pizza. My husband knew he was a dead man if he said no to pizza that night. He figured out I was pregnant before I did between the pizza episode and another evening that week when I refused to eat some roasted garlic!!!!! With all three of my pregnancies I had a few cravings very early, but at about 6 weeks morning sickness began and I mainly had food aversions. With each one the nauseousness became worse! With all three I couldn't touch green peppers, and to this day I don't go out of my way to use them even though they no longer make me sick!
A few cravings I did get very early though were cracker jacks(yuck!), peanut M&M's, & chocolate pudding. There seems to be a theme there. Once morning sickness started it was a lot of starches-dry toast, pretzels etc...My kids are now 4, 3, and 1 year. Just this past week I stopped nursing the baby. We both had a difficult week!!!

For me, it was cheeseburgers... I ate a bunch of them during my pregnancy--probably one a week at least. Similar to the rest of these stories, I was low on iron and had to start taking a supplement. Amazing how your body knows what it needs!
I couldn't stand the smell of freshly hard cooked egg--my officemate would bring them in every morning and I would reach for the wastebasket under my desk!

My first pregancy I craved pb&j's with a tall glass of milk but could not step foot into a mexican restaurant because the smell of the deep fried oil. My second pregnancy I ate baked potatoes almost every day. I never had any weird cravings, but just ordinary every day things for weeks, if not months, on end.

I had so many cravings with my pregnancies!
With #1: McDonald's fish sandwiches, Mexican food, shrimp egg fu yung (spelling?), & crunchy salads.
With #2: loaded baked potatoes (and anything made with potatoes), any type of red meat, cheese, eggs, & crunchy salads.
No sweet cravings, but I did eat more ice cream than usual with both.

I could not believe my bad luck with my first pregnancy I craved eggs and fish and had really strong aversions to chocolate and ice cream the two things I love! I still cant believe I went 9 months with no ice cream or chocolate. I did eat Vietnamese food 2-3 times a week during the whole pregnancy.
My second pregnancy I had no strong cravings or food aversions.

Susan - with my first I also craved McDonald's fish sandwiches! Too funny. I also could not stomach creamy foods with my first, which I normally LOVE.
For many years I did not eat meat (not pregnancy-related), including through my whole first pregnancy. But, like Beth Y mentioned, during my pregnancy with my second son I suddenly started to crave meat again. Turns out I was anemic and so my body was probably trying to tell me something. I don't remember many other cravings or aversions with the second.

I find all of these replies very interesting. I was fine until about 4 weeks along. Then I didn't want food anymore for about a day. Now I have a hard time finding things that sound appealing. I have not wanted pasta in weeks. What's wrong with me? I LIVE on pasta! I had london broil last night, which I normally don't like at all. Must be the iron thing. The only problem I have is that I'll crave something for a few days, but after I eat it, I don't want to see it ever again! I had a cheeseburger that I was dying for. Now the thought of that cheeseburger is enough to make me gag. I wanted McDonald's cheeseburger and fries. It was great while I was eating it, but now I can't even think about it. I was afraid because I have been craving soft vanilla ice cream and I had some last night, finally. However, I think I can eat that again. No eggs at all. When does it end? Will I ever crave pasta again????
One other funny thing- sometimes I can't even read this BB because of all the food talk! I start to get that naseaus feeling! (or however you spell it!) I am unable to read the thread about the four cheese macaroni- two things I normally love.

I have not had the joy of pregnancy...yet! But funny thing- my mother craved Mexican food with my brother and Italian food with me- all the way up to delivery! In fact the story goes that they were in El Rancho (the only place to eat Mexican food in Austin, TX.) two days before she delivered my brother and were back there eating again the next week!
Oh- by the way- Mexican food is my brother's favorite and Italian food is my favorite! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
I too have never been pregnant, so I can't speak from personal experience. But my mom always laughs because when she was pregnant with me (her first), she craved chocolate like crazy even though she usually doesn't eat it...she's more of a salt person. I turned out to be a chocoholic. With my brother, she couldn't get enough milk, even though she usually hates milk - she was drinking a few litres a day! And funny enough, my brother loves milk. After her pregnancies were over she recovered though, so don't worry Mrs. Reber! I'm sure you'll be able to eat pasta again soon enough!

With the first it was healthy things like a spinach salad or split pea soup. (I probably wasn't getting enough of some nutrient.) With the second it was Taco Bell - go figure.
And the funny thing is the second daughter is the one with the healthiest appetite and the older one just wants beans, chicken or McDonalds (of course the older one is 3 so maybe that has something to do with it).
As for aversions, it was the smell of dog food. I still refuse to feed the dog.

When my mom was pregnant with me she ate an obscene amount of liver and drank milk like it was going out of style. I tell her that is the reason that I don't like milk...I've had enough of it already to last me a lifetime! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I have a daughter who is almost one - can't believe it already! Great pregnancy, not sick, only a litte nausea, different cravings. Could not eat fish and a real aversion to red wine (did not like to get too close to the glass my husband was drinking - the smell, yuck!). LOVED vanilla milkshakes & red meat (the iron thing) the first semester. Had to have fresh raspberries the second. Peanut butter was big in the 3rd trimester.

With my first, we lived in Singapore and I found my biggest craving was Chocolate milkshakes, not one to be found on the whole island...so my husband had to go to the store and buy all the ingredients and during the making the blender froze so he had to repair it and when all was said and done I didn't share a drop. Then there was the day I craved these HUGE prawns (more like lobster tails) that you could only buy at market. So my husband got up at 5:30 and came home with four of them. When we sat down to dinner that night, I found I couldn't eat a bite of it...guess it was payback for the milkshake!

Too funny!
My first: fruit. The juicier the better. I lived on popsicles and the expensive fresh pineapple. I was sssssoooooo thirsty every moment! The big food aversion I had during this time was chicken. Could not even stand to look at someone else eating it--and I love chicken.
The second: chocolate shakes and cheeseburgers and steak and cheese subs. I could not get enough!
My sister with her second pregnancy ate carrots ALL the time. She kept a bag of them in her car with a vegetable peeler and she would eat them everywhere. Well, if you've never heard this--her son had the orangest skin you ever saw for many, many motnths after he was born--he loved them too!He always looked jaundiced--poor kid. Luckily it was temporary!
