Good Morning Everyone,
I was searching thru the net looking for an electric meat grinder. I looked at Service Merchandise, Cabela's (hunting/fishing) then was having difficulty choosing. Does anyone have a suggestion on one? I want it to grind venison and make sausage. Also for grinding my own chix breast for CL recipes!!
Well then it hit me---DAh, ask my friends on the board!

Carolyn, I wanted to buy my husband a grinder for Christmas one year. I checked out Cabella's and even ordered an electric one, but he asked me to send it back. He says that the ones you buy in the store are not so great for venison, since he is usually doing a very large amount at one time. He would much rather have an industrial one. We settled on a manual grinder and he wants to put a motor on it. We used it to make some summer sausage one year- it was tiring! He thought it was much better than the plastic, too, since the plastic would tend to get greasy and be hard to clean. For now, he has a friend who has an industrial grinder which he borrows. He then gets together with another hunting buddy and they grind the meat together. Now, if you were just to use the grinder for chicken or very small amounts of venison, I'm sure the Cabella's one would be great. My husband just feels that the smaller ones would be very slow and not hold up well for the amount of venison he'd want to grind. Unfortunately, they are usually very expensive! Don't know if this helps you at all. I know I was very confused when I was looking!

MrsReber,
Thank you for your reply. I had that in the back of my mind about getting the industrial one instead of the plastic one.The one thing that stops me from getting it is $399 HeeHEE.
The industrial one is the way to go because I'll have large volumes of meat to grind. I will have to find another alternative though. I just can't swing that right now.
Thanks again for confirming my thoughts. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Carlolyn & Mrs REber I have never made sausage but saw Julia & Pepin this weekend and it seem quite interesting. The same recipe was transformed into a pate and a log sausage wrapped in bread dough. They had this long device tube like which manually they pushed the sausage. But reading my Kitchen Aid manual there is a meat grinder device and sausage maker which fits the kitchen aid (I saw it online plus in service merchandise and stores). Could this be of help or because of venison and amount you need a larger machine?
PS I did some searching and found super meat grinders. under www.birosaw.com (http://www.birosaw.com) and you can also try restaurant stores where you can find big machines. Also ANVIL has diff meat grinders for all needs.

Oh My Gosh!!!
I have a new Kitchenaid Food Processor I bought a month ago. I have not had time to look at the paperwork as yet. I had no clue it would offer an attachment for grinding. Thank you so much for the tip Vanessa. I will definitely look at my paperwork soon as I get home. MrsReber isn't this wonderful! Do you have a food processor?

There may be some confusion. The grinder and sausage maker attachments for the kitchenaid are for the kitchenaid stand mixer. I have the meat grinder. I do not make sausage so I don't have that attachment nor do I know if the grinder can handle that quantity. It is stainless steel, though, and works quite well for my purposes. I grind fish for gefilte fish. It also grinds chicken breasts and meat for hash quite nicely.

Carolyn, I had thought of the kitchen aid mixer with the attachment (make both me and my husband happy!!) but he still thinks it would be too slow for the large quantity of meat. He'll get 2 or 3 deer before he's ready to grind and it takes him a few hours as it is (or maybe it's all those beers he drinks with his hunting buddy while he's grinding???) Anyway, I have offered to buy him one a couple of times and he said until we can afford the industrial one, he didn't think it was worth it. By all means check out the kitchen aid attachment and let me know about it! Stainless steel is what you want to avoid any kind of bacteria growth. It's much easier to clean. He said a smaller grinder would be good for doing very small quantities of meat if he wanted to try different chop meat mixes (he usually uses pork fat to mix it with). By the way, where did you see an industrian grinder for $399? That's cheaper than the ones that I've seen!

I gotta put my two cents in about the Kitchen Aid grinder attachment. I really like it, BUT when it comes to grinding elk (I don't know if venison would be the same or not) I have to stop it ALOT and clean the sinew out from around the blade and the holes it comes out of. I put very well trimmed chunks through it. The stuff is invisible it seems, and it's a real pain in the neck to have to stop it so often. It's great for other grinding though.

Hey Guys Thanks for your help!
Karen--when I got home & looked at my paperwork on my Kichenaid I too saw that the grinder attachment was on the stand mixer, which I do not have. I was so disappointed.

MrsReber--the grinder for $399 that I mentioned earlier is in the Cabela's catalog. It is a commercial grade cast iron neck and stainless steel bowl. It grinds 5 lbs per minute. The next grade is $599-grinds 10 lbs. per minute. Here is their address-www.cabelas.com let me know what you think.
I also have several deer at one time to process, so I too would need a heavy duty machine.

Vanessa--you are a dear for posting those kitchenaid pictures on my e-mail. I have a food processor though. thanks for the trouble you went to. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
