View Full Version : Where to buy ring molds?

I really want to make the molten chocolate cakes that are in the February issue of MS Living. It calls for the cakes to be made in ring molds measuring 2 1/2 inches high and 2 3/4 inches in diameter. Any thoughts on where I might buy these? I have checked MS online, Williams-Sonoma, King Arthur, and Cooking.com. The only thing I found that was close are some "round mousse rings" on cooking.com, but these are 3 x 2 (I'm assuming 3" diameter, since in the picture they look like they are bigger across then they are tall). Does anyone know where I might get some molds in the size called for? If not, do you think the 3x2 molds would work? I'm concerned that the 1/4 inch difference in diameter won't be enough to make up for the 1/2 inch less in height and that the cakes will just wind up overflowing, but maybe that is unfounded.

Would mini-bundt pans work?? I've seen them at Bed, Bath and Beyond or Linens N Things with the rest of the cake pans.

Here's a link to BBB pan: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=10822386

Sherri, now we just have to hope someone has an answer for us. If I don't come up with anything better over the weekend I am just going to order the mousse rings from cooking.com and see how it turns out. I guess I would just have to bake an extra one in advance to see how it turns out, and you wouldn't want all that chocolate to go to waste:D

Leigh, thanks for the suggestion, but the "molten" part of the cake is actually made by baking a truffle in the middle (so when you cut into it there is a pocket of melted chocolate) so I don't think a mini-bundt pan would work.

I'm not sure what the cakes are like, but can you not use muffin pans or "ramekins". I know they come in a variety of sizes.

I did a search on her site and came up with this Moulten Cakes Dessert Kit. Looks to me like upside-down muffins or cup cakes.

This may be too late, but I've made something very similar in ramekins - just the cheap pyrex ones that you can get pretty much anywhere. Here's the recipe from epicuriuos if you're interested - it is absolutely delicious, and very stunning. Oh - and easy too! I never make the mint sauce that goes with it - I'm not a big mint fan. I have served with raspberry sauce, or just plain, and it is fabulous either way.

THANKS
I actually decided to just use ramekins instead, I don't think I would make much use out of the ring molds!
