Oh dear, I cleaned out my frig today and found a bottle of flax seed oil (unopened) that I apparently bought with something in mind, but it obviously never happened. I have heard that this oil has a strange taste, so I was wondering if anyone has favorite uses for this oil.

I drizzle flax seed oil & honey over toast or a toasted english muffin, then top with a sprinkling of ground flax seed. Yum! Flax oil has an unusual flavor that I like. Be sure to check the expiration date - it can go rancid. Just remember you can't heat flax oil.

:) You could take a couple of teaspoons of the stuff every morning, as a supplement... which is what I do. I buy it specifically for this purpose, and I usually chase it with a bit of orange juice.
The flavor is "nutty" and might take a bit of getting used to -- but it's not wretched by any stretch of the imagination. And the health benefits simply can't be beat.
Just a few benefits:
Protection from cancer
Protection from heart disease
Protection from stroke
Enhanced immunity
Increased energy and stamina
Weight loss and maintenance
Quicker recovery from exercise and stress
Improvement in behavioral disorders
Mental clarity and calmness
Improved learning ability
Improved kidney function
Relief from inflammatory and allergic conditions

I keep my flax seed oil in the freezer after opening it. I use it mainly in smoothies for the whole family (a couple tbsp. to a full blender of smoothie). YUM! :D Here's my recipe:
Smoothies
(recipe from the back of the Whole Foods 365 Day Berry Medley Bag)
1 cup frozen Berry Medley (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries)
1 banana
1 cup juice (apple, oj, etc.)~ We like apple!
1 cup milk (regular, soy, rice, etc.)
1/3 cup frozen yogurt ~ We like Stoneyfield Farm's nonfat frozen raspberry! (If I use a frozen banana, I just use regular yogurt.)
My additions: 1-2 tbsp. flax seed oil and 1 tbsp. wheat germ

Thanks for all the replies. Lorilei, I took a teaspoon of oil straight. I didn't mind the taste at all. That will be quick and easy. Tomorrow I'm going to try yomomma's suggestion of mixing it with honey and drizzling on an English muffin. That sounds really good. I've copied Susan's smoothie recipe and I will try that soon.
Thanks again. I think I can do this. The health benefits are tremendous, aren't they.

I took a vegetarian cooking class last year and the instructor used flax seed oil as a butter substitute on potatoes or mashed potatoes. I bake potato wedges that are covered with flax seed oil. I also remeber her suggesting to put on toast. I would have to look back at my notes to see what else she recommended. Enjoy!
