Sorry to bother you guys - I tried to gather some info by using the search tool but was unsuccessful. I am getting in the soup mood. In looking back at prior issues this year I came accross January's cooking class. Has anyone tried any of those soups? I have made the Shrimp Bisque many times and love it. I welcome your insights, as always! Thanks

Thumbs up for the Chile Cheese Chowder, and I do think it is important to use poblano peppers, it wouldn't taste nearly as good other wise.

Also the White Bean with Peppers soup was yummy.

A second vote for the Chile Cheese Chowder. I made it last winter and it was delicious. My family also liked the French Onion Soup with Beef and Barley...a different twist on a traditional french onion soup.

Last week I was looking for some comfort food and tried the Chunky Chicken-and-Rice Soup with Turnips from the same issue. I used potatoes instead of the turnips, as the recipe suggested. I also must admit to adding some extra cheddar cheese. I thought it was very good. It took alittle extra time to boil the whole chicken, etc. but I think the flavor from the broth and the resulting tenderness of the chicken was well worth the effort.

Glad to hear the Thai Shrimp Bisque was also good. I have had my eye on it for awhile. Now I will have to make it!

We just had the Bean with Peppers soup from the same issue. It's one of my favorites and full of flavor! That was one of my "best" issues because of the great soups.

I loved the creamy wild rice and turkey soup. It is definately a standard comfort food in my house! Be forewarned though, many people on this board found it bland. There's not a lot of spice so it basically tastes like smoked turkey and wild rice in a cream base.

the "Scotch Broth" was great! stew type ingredients with a twist... lamb, turnips, leeks, etc... but in a broth-y base. try it!

I also really liked the smoked turkey & wild rice soup, but I think the turkey I used was almost too "smoky" tasting for me. I was thinking maybe I would try this recipe again using leftover Thanksgiving turkey instead. I'll probably add some spices as well.

I made the French Onion and Barley Soup, we loved that. Another CL soup that is great for a weeknight, quick and easy soup is called Corn and Chicken Chowder. I think it's from 1998, I have no idea what month. But that's very good, and very easy.

Rustysmom,

Sorry to barge in on a different topic! I was going to email you but there's no email listed for you. I just wanted to thank you for the meatball recipe. I made it this weekend, although improvised with different and additional ingredients (added turkey sausage & didn't have the Lipton onion soup mix but did have Good Season's Garlic and Herb mix). THEY WERE DELICIOUS! Thanks for the inspiration!!

Would you please post the recipe for the French Onion and Barley soup? I can't find my early 2000 issues http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif. I love beef barley soup, but have been wanting to try something different and this sounds delicious!!
Thanks!
Cheryl

At our last supper club gathering our theme was "Soups" and one of the ladies made the Chili Cheese chowder and it was wonderful! We even took some home to have the next day!

Add another thumbs up for both the Chile-Cheese chowder and the French Onion with Barley - they were excellent. Another of my very favorite CL soups is Chicken-Cheddar Chowder. I think is is very similar to the Chicken Corn chowder, but not the same thing. This one is from December 1996 and has red pepper, chicken, cheese, potatoes and corn in a cream soup base. YUMMY! I just made it the other night...............I just love the fall!

If you're just looking for new soups in general ,there was a soup thread about a month ago from which I made several good soups.... Try CL's african chicken peanut soup or the chicken tortilla soup on that old thread--you sprinkle with sour cream, cheese, and cilantro at the end and it's really yummy.
