My friend (who is from Korea) took me to a Korean restaurant last night. I will describe what she ordered for us. Maybe some of you will know the names of them.

First they brought a "pancake" sliced like a pizza. It was filled with green onions, shrimp and squid.

Then a soup came. It was Spicy:)! It had oysters and tofu in it.

Next they brought a thinly sliced beef on onions...very tasty!

Several sides came with the meal. They were white sticky rice, cabbage, tempah, fried tofu, seaweed, bean sprouts and another green vegetable that was slightly bitter but very tasty. Yon didnt know how to tell me its name in English. She doesnt think we have it here.

It was a fabulous meal! We ate in the sushi bar area, but each of the tables, had we had one, had a small grill built in it. Yon said they will bring your meat to the table if you wish and you can grill it! Anyone else been to a Korean restaurant?????

Yep. I've been to two, one in Cary (NC) and one in Paris (go figure). I enjoyed them both quite a bit. I forget what I got (it's been about 6 months since I've been), but I remember enjoying it. I like Korean a lot. Not as much as Thai or Vietnamese or even Japanese, but I do really like it.

Yes! i went for the first time in oct with my book club and again a few weeks ago with my dh. great service the first time horrible the second :mad:. the food was very good which is why i wanted my dh to try it. both times i had bbq beef and pork grilled right at the table. the grill was in the center of the table. we were served a salad first- yummy but didn't seem korean if you know what i mean. resembled a basic green salad. then some dumplings. we had sides too- bean sprouts that i loved. they tasted very nutty. kimchee- yummy. some sort of red spicy pickled veggie- don't know what is was-ok. two rectangles of gelatinous ricey thingys with no taste :confused: . marinated tofu- yummy. for dessert they gave us rice water type thing. very very good. it had a similar taste to a dessert i had in a mayalsian restaurant and i can't id it. any suggestions?

I think the thinly sliced beef with onions is called bulgoki (sp?). I had a Korean intern last year who gave me the recipe for this, but I haven't tried it. My brother-in-law spent some time in Korea, and said they often ate a lettuce wrap-type thing--everyone grabbed a leaf, grabbed a lot of different fillings/toppings from the center of the table, and rolled it up! Sounds like fun. He also had a lot of kimchee.

Anyway, here's her recipe, as she wrote it:

Korean Barbecue (BUL-GO-GEE) Recipe
BUL means Fire and GO-GEE means Meat in Korean

Ingredients

Beef--Ask it to be sliced as like bacon or paper; Rib-Eye or Sirloin are best, but you could use others
Onion, sliced thin
Green onion, 2" long sliced
Kiwi or Cola (optional)

Sauce (when you prepare total 1 lb of beef and onion):

3 tablespoons soy sauce
3 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons rice wine (optional)
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon garlic, chopped
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon sesame salt (optional)

Procedure:

--(optional) Mix sliced beef with grated kiwi or cola for 1 - 2 hours. This will make the beef tender. If you use kiwi, you don't have to remove it after. If you use cola, drain cola from the beef.
--Combine all the sauce ingredients.
--Combine the sauce with the meat, onion, and green onion, and mix well.
--(optional) Let marinate at least 1- 2 hours.
--Barbecue or pan-fry (with a little oil or none).
--Enjoy Korean Barbecue (We normally eat it with cooked white rice).

I dont know. SHe lives off of Wirt Rd and we went from her house. I dont think we went further west, I think we went further north on Wirt, but Im not sure. I will ask her tomorrow.

Yum! I also think the meat dish was bulgoki. I LOVE the stuff! And the cabbage dish was probably kimchee.

We have a super Korean restaurant here in Austin called Koreana. I highly recommend that you Austinites try it out.

Austinites should definitely try Korea House....

It is off of anderson road in the shopping center with the new alamo drafthouse and fudruckers I think.....It's across from the mall with the ice skating rink....


get the bim bim bop....it is a dish with thinly sliced beef, onions, tofu, seaweed, sprouts, etc. so tasty with kim chee and all of the sides...I highly recommend.

I recently moved from austin so I am missing all of the great restaurants!

especially the breakfast tacos....

I know the pancakes you describe, except the ones I get don't have any squid in them. They serve them fre with our meal as an appetizer at the Korean place here.

It does sound like the meat dish was bulgogi (also spelled bul ko gee, bulgoki )

The Korean side dishes that come in little bowls at the table are your condiments for the meal. We usually get a dish of mung beans, a bowl of steamed kale with sesame seeds (probably your green item), three varieties of pickled vegetables varying from mild to hot - one made with pickled diakon that is very spicy. A dish of bean sprouts with vinegar, a dish of pickled daikon by itslef, and a large bowl of cabbage kimchee. Yum!

Another vote for Korea House - although I've never eaten Korean food there! Well, I don't think sushi is officially Korean, but maybe I'm wrong :confused: . Anyway, they have fabulous (and cheap!) sushi - the best in town IMO. We love to go there and catch a movie at the Village afterward. Great place!
