First time here - is it best to buy the magazines which I have some of - or buy the cookbooks - and which would be the better one to start with - I am not a beginner cook but new at CL mags, etc. - are all the recipes in the cookbooks or what happens to 'all the magazines one collects?'

Funny, I just read the thread about reading the whole mag, and my first thought was why not just buy cookbooks, that would be my answer.

I've been a subscriber for a couple years, and there's just something about looking forward to getting the magazines each month that beats out just buying the cookbook. Besides, with the cookbook you have to wait until the end of the year until they're all compiled, and you don't get to read the articles!

Lena,
The books are wonderful, and you can get them for a bargain once they're "old". My sister found the '87 book for something like a dollar & bought 1 for each of us. And, a little while ago, someone was nice enough to post their findings on www.half.com. (http://www.half.com.) I checked and you can get some for as little as a few bucks. Especially since you're new to CL.
And, like emilycat said, it sure is nice looking forward to the magazine! I've subscribed on-and-off for years. I have to admit it gets a bit overwhelming when you have so many issues. But take it as it comes. Welcome to the board!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
Am I rambling? Sorry. Try half.com and maybe a subscription for a year. It's awesome!

I just love both....I look forward to the mags every month and it's great having a nice cookbook to look through. I usually don't keep the mags too long. I enter the recipes I want to keep into my computer and if it has a picture, I cut it out and paste onto the recipe and it's just perfect!! I collect cookbooks. I have them from my great Gramma and also my sweethearts great gramma. Whatever you do...just have fun and enjoy!

If you think you are going to spend a lot of time on this bulletin board I'd recommend subscribing to the magazine. Every month when the current issue starts arriving in everyone's mailboxes the posts about the recipes start going up. It's torture reading these posts knowing you might have to wait a few days to see them in YOUR issue, let alone having to wait months for the recipes in the yearly cookbook!
Hi, I have used both. The cookbook that I have used is "Five Star" I believe. It seems to have more of a gourmet flair, which I love for entertaining. However, I love the magaiznes for the variety in both ease and theme ideas. Also, the magazines are by the season which ensures you are cooking with what's in season. As for what I do with the magazines, I cut out all the recipes that I know I want to try and I have files by category, then I file my magazine away for a year or so. I purge every two to three years.
