We've had the worst luck with this appliance! We've had 5 or 6 in 20 yrs! We've had a couple of basic model B&D, Toastmaster, Krups, can't even remember others. Oh yes, we had a Delonghi Alfredo model. Some just stopped working, the Alfredo and a B&D caught on fire, the timer went on our most recent one, meaning it never shut off!!
I want one that will last!!!! After doing a search I see that some people have had 1 TO in the same time we've replaced all of ours! We use it everyday for toast, I'd give it up and just get a toaster, BUT, DH likes melted cheese on toast.
So, what to get? CindyWeightWatcher suggested the Delonghi TO/Convection oven, but pointed out it does not make good toast. I don't have a convection oven, so that model interests me, but we like good toast :)
Does anyone have, or seen review of, the hybrid Krups Toastor? That looks interesting too.
Will a high end appliance last longer? Seems like I've spent from about 20-60 before. I don't want to spend $$$$ if they still don't last?.
Help!

I have a subscription to Consumer Reports online, and I just checked it out - they recommend the Cusinart TOB-175 (as well as the TOB-165 and TOB-160). Here were theire comments on this model:

Very good overall and feature-laden, but big and pricey (Retail $208). Convection option, electronic touchpad controls, digital display, three-position rack, removable crumb tray. Three-year warranty. But chrome body shows fingerprints.

The other one they recommended is The Kenmore (Sears) KTES8. That one retails for a lot less ($70), and here are the comments:

Very good performance and value, though fewer features than some. Two-position rack. Removable crumb tray. Cord wrap.

Maybe that will help, and hopefully others will have some good recommendations too.

My Black & Decker from college (17 years old) finally died 1 1/2 years ago. I went for the more expensive model, the B&D "Toast-R-Oven Plus and am VERY pleased. It toasts great, makes little pizzas, bakes cookies, I re=heat muffins and scones all the time, make french bread pizza, finish baking something from the stove etc.

I really think it's the best, I like it because I don't have to heat the whole oven (and the kitchen in the summer) for baking something small. I think I use it several times a day!

Thanks Grace and Chefmom! I'll check out these models. I'll have to decide about the convection oven feature. Tami, is your's the digital model?

I appreciate you taking the time to check CR for me, Grace. I'll have to resub to the online version. I used to sub and forgot how useful it is!

I have a Black and Decker toaster oven/broiler that I'm very happy with. I've had it for 3 or 4 years now. It says "continuous clean" on it, and it has a white finish (we were putting in under-cabinet lighting & I thought the chrome finish might reflect the light unpleasantly). This TO replaced another Black and Decker TO that had lasted at least 16 years. So I have no complaints with Black and Decker.

Sorry you had bad experiences with B&D before -- my B&D toaster oven, which I got as a wedding shower gift, is about to celebrate its 13th birthday. (Maybe I should plan a Bar Mitzvah? :p)

I've actually thought I'd like to replace it sometime, because it does not have a removeable crumb tray -- but I can't see getting rid of it while it's still working nicely.

My regular oven has a convection setting, which I've found great for doing roasts, like chicken. Don't know how useful I would find a small convection oven, though.

I love my Delonghi Convection TO. CindyWeightWatcher had said (I think) that it took a long time to make toast. Well, it does seem like it takes a few minutes but the toast itself is always fine.

I like it for the convection part. DH works evenings and so most nights it's just DD and I for dinner. I use it constantly. It's huge, too. My PC 9x9 stoneware pan fits perfectly!

As a longtime (+10 years, I confess) shopper with QVC, I am on "waitlist" for a multi-function convention/toaster/rotisserie oven made by their Cook's Essential line. The price is $76.86, but if it comes back in stock within the 45 day waitlist window, I'll get it for a bit less.

It seems like a decent item and a good price. If you're a QVC shopper, the item number is K93765. If anyone has this, let me know if you like it. I've been waivering on whether to stay on waitlist or cancel the order.

Totally agree with Gracie - I LOVE the Delongi Toaster/Convection oven - yes, takes a little longer for 'toast' but having the double feature is fantastic and so worth the extra seconds for toasting - only 2 of us here now - and that convection is wonderful and extremely large....................

I have the Cuisinart Convection Broiler Toaster Oven and I love it!

http://www.chefscatalog.com/images/products/00301_l.jpg

It's $179 for the white (free shipping at www.chefscatalog.com) and $199 for the chrome. I LOVE the convection feature, and I love the slide out crumb tray! :D It makes great toast, it just takes about 3.5 minutes! Unless you're in an awful hurry, it works really well. Our Sunbeam toaster went belly up last month and DH insisted we didn't have to replace it because we have the Cuisinart! Very easy to clean, and I love knowing the name is quality. I bake brownies, make cornbread in my little cast iron skillet, and I even bake chicken breasts! With the convection feature I can make two chicken breasts in 10 minutes! I highly recommend this one!

I do love the Delonghi convection/toaster oven.
With reference to the toasting, there are different
settings, generally, the one I prefer takes 4 minutes
and it does toast evenly. Also, you can fit 6 pieces.
The quality is great, everything seems tight and
operates smoothly.

Go for the Cuisinart the company has been around over 30 years and there product is exceptional and one of the best on the market. They stand by there products and you can find replacement parts instead of purchasing a new machine. We have been working with Cuisinart since 1976 and stand behind there products.

I am trying to decide between the Cuisinart and Delonghi Convection Toaster Ovens. The Delonghi includes 2 cookie sheets . The Cuisinart does does include these. For those of you who have either of these-do you bake cookies in yours? If you have the Cuisinart one-do you need to buy special cookie sheets?
As my family shrinks I think one of these babies would get alot of use around here. I just can't decide which to get! (I am ordering though the Sears Canada catalogue- the Delonghi is 279.00 and the Cuisinart is 229. I await your opinions!

I like the DeLonghi although I do not bake cookies in
it. Hopefully, others have tried it and give you
an opinion.

I just bought a Breville. It's much bigger than a toaster oven; it has convection; and toasts wonderfully. It's a bit more expensive, but I only have one oven and was looking for something that can act as a 2nd oven. It fits a 9X13 pan. I love it. And, the crumb tray is in the front of the oven instead of the back. Check it out and look at the great reviews it has gotten.

I have the Breville too and just love it! It also makes a darn fine piece of toast.

For goodness sakes, this thread was originated on '03! I feel silly for even posting in it a little bit ago. :p
