We have been invited to a wine and cheese party to watch the Oscars next Sunday. I want to make this bread, but I don't want to use frozen bread dough. I also think I will free form it into a round loaf instead of baking it in a pan. My question is--- should I use a recipe for white bread or a recipe for french bread as the base? TIA!

I made this last week with a frozen loaf as required and it came out really good. The frozen loafs is a basic white bread so I would use a basic white break recipe if you want to start from scratch. Good Luck. :)

I enjoyed the Ugly Bread from CL's Jan/Feb issue. That might be good with olives in it.

I made it using a sourdough bread recipe, and it was fantastic!
I don't think you can go wrong with either French-style or white bread-style. The important thing is to spread the olives on the dough, and then roll it up tightly. Whatever you do, avoid kneading the olives into the dough, unless you want a purple dough.

Wait-is this bread supposed to be baked in a pan? I made it last night and just cooked it on a cookie sheet, in the shape of a log. It came out fine, but alittle rustic looking. I guess my St. Patty's day celebrating got to my head more than I thought!!
