View Full Version : Who can help me become more BB literate?

OK.
I have figured out how to change the color of my text and the size or font of my text when I post, and I can even do bold, italic, or underlined. But I've noticed that a lot of you can do several of those functions at once. I haven't been able to figure this out. I don't usually find myself so technologically clueless. Can someone help?

Also I've noticed that some of you have really funky animated avatars. How on earth do you do that? It's soooo cool!

I am by NO MEANS BB literate, but here is a link that I found helpful with the avatar problem. The thread has links to sites with some animated avatars. Good luck!

To do them all at once, change the "vB Code" which is right above where you type Your Reply from "Normal Mode" to "Enhanced Mode." If they're set to prompt, accept the cookie. Then click on whatever icon(s) you want to use, then click the 'X' for Close Current Tag or Close All Tags.

Don't forget to CLOSE the tags at the end. I forgot and just happened to preview the message before posting....I went back and closed the tags and Ta Da

I am so new to this... I don't even know what a "cookie" is, much less an "antimated avatar". Overwhelmed. Like in calculus class in college. Think I'll go bake something (recipe books and ovens I can handle). Hey, I think I might have figured out how to do color. Let's try "font". I don't feel so bad after all. Maybe there's hope!

Ok, how about another question?
How do you quote someone without quoting their entire post?

Molli526
03-21-2002, 03:41 PM
One of 2 ways..

Either hit "quote" at the bottom of someone's response, and then edit to what want to show on your response

OR

Hit "quote" when you are on your blank screen and copy and paste what you want to quote from the other person's response.

1. [QUOTE]

2. copy and paste the text

[QUOTE] Ok, how about another question?
How do you quote someone without quoting their entire post?

3. Close the Tag

[QUOTE] Ok, how about another question?
How do you quote someone without quoting their entire post? [/ QUOTE] (doing that so it will show up on the response)

Really, it is all a matter of preference

Thanks for this tip, Molli. I knew how to do the quote in reply, but couldn't figure out where the "originally posted by..." was coming from. I knew people weren't going in and adding it with italics.

A previous thread had given me info on the rest, so now I leave my screen on enhanced mode all the time. My husband is also on a BB (for flight simulators) and is envious of all the cool stuff we can do on this board. They didn't even have smilies until recently. :p

You appear to have left off the closing tag, so the computer doesn't know where the end of the quote is.

If you are using the enhanced mode, you have to click on the "close all tags" button; otherwise, use [/QUOTE] at the end of the part you want to quote.

Ok, I can't figure how to do the "originally posted by" eather. It says to edit it. How do you do that?

sushibones
03-22-2002, 05:13 PM
At the bottom of each post are a bunch of buttons. "Quote" is on the far right. If you hit that one, the entire post (surrounded by quote tags) goes into the reply box and is preceded by "originally posted by..." If you only want part of the post, then delete the parts you don't want.

You can also use the quote function within the reply function, but in that case there is no "originally posted by...." It will just indent and put between lines what you put in between the quote tags.

Ralph,
I think I need extra help! Or remediation of some sort, at least.
I did click on "enhanced mode", but no prompt asks me to accept any cookies. Then whether I select what I want to change color on, or whether I click on the color first and then type, after I've closed the tags and previewed the reply, the only thing on there is plain text with the little codes next to it, but it hasn't really changed it to the color or to bold. Do I need to go to some other area to do something so it will ask me to accept cookies? Thanks.

The changes won't appear in the grey box where you type your responses, but they will appear after you click "Submit Reply."

Now you have to close the tags. You've only told where to start the changes, not where to stop. If you're in enhanced mode, then click "close all tags". Or you can close them manually by typing the close tags notation.

I have also found that if I type in the tags, rather than hitting the appropriate buttons, then the "close tag button" does not work. If you type them in manually, then you have to close them manually.

OK. I see you got it.

knunes—

If you hit the preview reply button, it should show the result of the tags, but not the tags themselves. So if you wanted something to be bold, it should show up bold in the preview. If it doesn't, then there is an error in the tags somewhere. You should check to be sure both open and close tags are there. If they are both there, then there is another problem somewhere. I have never noticed any mention of cookies, but my computer is also set to accept all cookies.

I use the preview reply button all the time, because even though I know what I'm supposed to do, I forget to close or something else. The preview makes it really easy to see if there's an error somewhere, and fix it before you show your mistake to everyone else.

Wish there was also a preview after you've edited a post.

Lee—

I don't think you can color/bold the smilies. It would be fun though, wouldn't it? Then you could do a really big red embarrassed or eek face! I've wanted one of those before.

You need to add text after your open tags, then close the tags after the text.

Hmmm. It appears Lee is editing while I'm giving her suggestions.

Lee

Wow Susan!

I didn't think anyone would see me playing! I don't seem to be getting this which is quite ironic because I teach computer classes! What am I doing wrong... I changed to the Enhanced mode, hit bold, font and color, typed, and then closed the tags (Tried both buttons on different tries), but it isn't working. Any advice?

I am the all-seeing Oz. No, I think I'm mixing up my genres. I saw your original post, and while I was replying, yours disappeared from the thread, so I knew you were editing (or deleting).

What you did sounds right, so I don't know what the problem is. Did you try looking at "preview reply" to see if there was anything obvious wrong?

Lee
03-23-2002, 01:47 PM
When I hit preview, it shows what I have typed without the color, size, etc. changes, but it has codes in brackets. Is that bad? It must be since this isn't working.

Great—glad you got it figured out. And welcome to the exalted "senior" status.

Just wanted to let you know that many (well, maybe just me) of the more experienced posters still lapse into brain farts from time to time. I've been sticking around to see how you're doing and the new posts thread shows you've posted. I go to the thread and mine is still the last post. I go back to the new posts thread, and this thread shows 52 posts instead of the 50 that were there just a minute ago. I go to the thread and I'm still the last post. What in the heck is wrong? I finally saw that there was a page 2 notation at the bottom. Duh. I've set my options to 50 posts per page and your last 3 posts were on the 2nd page. It took me 10 minutes, though, to figure that out.

Although the board does seem to be loading slowly and inconsistently today. Maybe it's just me.

So what was the problem, and how did you figure it out? Inquiring minds want to know!

OK, that didn't work. :o Here's what I'm trying to do: I'm trying to put an avatar under my name, but color me computer-illiterate because I just can't figure it out. Grrr. Normally I'm not quite this dense. Can someone help me out? Please?

When I tried to get one, I got a message that said: "ADMINISTRATOR: You MUST revert your modifyoptions template." What does this mean? I read this thread and did turn on the Enhanced Mode, but that doesn't seem to have helped.

TIA for any help! :)
