We are taking a long car trip and do not want to spend a lot of money eating at fast food or roadside places. What are some good foods to bring along - especially for lunch and dinner?

Are we talking of Days? Hours? What is your cooler situation? We do this a LOT & so I need details to give you better help.

When we took a long train trip last month, I made wrap sandwiches (lavosh, ham, turkey, lettuce, sliced sweet pepper, cucumber, cooked rice, lite mayo) - they travel really nicely, don't get soggy (my big gripe with sandwiches). I wrapped them in waxed paper (foil would work also) and then in a baggie.

SandyM....did they not get soggy because of the type of bread you used?
I love to take "snacky" foods: Hummus, carrots, crackers, tortillas, fruit

Yep - that's right. Lavosh (like a tortilla) stays nice & firm. I have an issue with soggy bread (ask Jewel  )

SandyM -
I DEFINITELY have an issue with soggy bread, as well! Eeeewwww!!
As for the car-trip food question, we like to pack fruit, nuts, muffins, and sandwiches made on bagels (cheese (cheddar or monterey jack) and lettuce, or even hardboiled egg with salsa -- the latter needs to be assembled right before eating because it's messy).

:) When take a car trip, we like to bring hummus and crackers, grapes, Go-gurts (I'm not sure how that's spelled, but they're the yogurt snacks in tubes for easy eatin'), granola bars, carrots & ranch dressing, is what I can think of off-hand.
Have a great and safe trip!
