I've noticed this ingredient in quite few recipes. What is it - and where would I find it in the supermarket? Hate that lost feeling of wandering around looking in every corner. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Thanks

You should find it with all the spices.

You can find cream of tartar in the baking/spice isle of the store. It is a by-product of wine fermentation and used to stabilizes egg whites and to make baking powder

There's another interesting use for cream of tartar. If you have aluminum pans that get darkened by boiling water in them. Fill them up with water and then add some cream of tartar. Boil for a few minutes and the pans are back to their original color.

A paste of cream of tartar will take the rust stains off a bathtub. Interesting and useful stuff isn't it?

And, we eat stuff with this in it? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I guess more than one use is a plus to add it to the cabinet! By the way - just out of curiousity - exactly how do you make the paste to get the rust stains off?

Cream of tarter is also a key ingredient in home-made play dough! We go through a lot of it here... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Cream of Tartar added to egg whites before beaten makes them stiff - every time! I always add to egg whites.

JanetB,
Just add a little water to the Cream of Tartar, spread on the rust stains and let sit for a while before rinsing/scrubbing it off.
JanetB, lemon juice, vinegar, baking soda, salt, even water, are all common in our diets, and in much larger quantities that cream of tartar. We consider them very safe, but they all can have strong reactions with other substances.
