And do you have a recipe? I was asked for a recipe for a dump cake to be made for a volenteer group to give out at a homeless shelter but I don't even know what a dump cake is. Can you guys help?

I'm not sure, but I believe a dump cake is one that you "dump" all the ingredients into a bowl, mix them, put them in a pan, and bake. I don't have a recipe, but I suspect you could find one somewhere on line if you needed one. Hope this helps!

I think a dump cake is just a cake that has a bunch of odds and ends (mostly panty staples, and especially cherrys and/or pineapple) "dumped" in. Here are some recipes I've found. I haven't made any of them.

Traditional Dump Cake (most of the recipes I found were similar to this one)
1 - can crushed pineapple
1 - cup cherry pie filling
1 - yellow cake mix
1 - cup pecans, chopped
½ - pound cold butter or margarine

Preheat over to 350 degrees.

Grease a 9 x 12 baking pan. Dump (the recipe's name) pineapple, cherry pie filling, cake mix, and pecans into the greased pan. You want to distribute the ingredients evenly. Finally, flake or shave butter or margarine over the top.

Bake 1 hour and allow cooling 2 hours.

Chocolate Dump Cake
Ingredients
1 (5 ounce) package non-instant chocolate pudding
2 1/3 cups milk
1 (18.5 ounce) package chocolate cake mix
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Directions
1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease one 9 x 13 inch baking pan.
2 Combine chocolate pudding and milk in a saucepan and cook over medium heat until thick, stirring frequently.
3 Remove pan from heat and add in dry cake mix. Mix together and pour into the lightly greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Evenly spread the chocolate chips over the top of the cake.
4 Bake at 350 degrees F(175 degrees C) for 40 to 45 minutes. Let cake cool and serve.

This is tried and true......I grew up with it:

APPLE DUMP CAKE

2 eggs well-beaten with a fork
1 cup of oil
2 cups of sugar
2 cups of flour
2 cups of raisins
2 tsps. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. salt (optional)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 can apple pie filling (we use the Thank You brand)

Dump all but the pie filling in a bowl and mix well.
Mix in the apple filling.
Dump in a greased 9x13 pan and bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees.

I hope you like this. It really is quick and fast, hence, the dump title.

When people are talking about "dump cakes" around here, they are referring to a recipe similar to the first one Gwendolyn posted.

Well, I don't know about Dump Cake, but my SIL makes muffins that she calls "Dump Muffins". You know, muffins made with bran that are high in fiber. ;)
