While thumbing through the March CL, I came across the Good Cook ad and finally decided to go ahead and join. (Do I really need MORE cookbooks  )
Anyway, I decided to check the offerings on the website before sending in the card as I know they're sometimes different. All I can say is WOW!! When you click on the *join* button, it takes you to an entire catalog of books available for the introductory purchase. It's the 4/$1 deal with a committment to buy 2 more in the next year. Shipping for the 4 books is $11.46 (plus the $1/book). They did not offer the option to purchase a 5th book at half price, but I did notice that all the books count as *one* selection...even the giant Professional Chef.
After processing my order, it took me to the members only page; and I really didn't find anything offered there (other than some sale items) that wasn't offered on the introductory page.
I ordered:
Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian
Deborah Madison's Vegeterian Cooking for Everyone
The Dinosaur Barbeque (fond, fond memories of this place!!)
Maggie Gelzer's Artisian Baking Across America
Happy Cooking!!

Just in the nick of time! I was about to send in a card to re-join, based on a magazine ad. I'll definitely go to the website and see what other choices there are... thanks for the info!

I'm ready to cancel my membership. I've been a member for several months and have both pleased and disappointed.
I was happy with them when I received my membership deal, and one or two orders after that. But that was it.
First of all, whenever you buy a "second book" for a deal, they never include that book as part of your bonus points. Fine, I can live with that. However, they err many times. I have ordered from the "buy two, get one free" deal and they never send the third book. I always have to call them and explain that "yes, I did order the third" - blah, blah. They send it in the end, but its a hassle.
Another thing, I always reply via website and the confirmations are sent to my email. Well, yesterday, there was a box in the mail - I refused it as I did not order it. Their 'new" website (under my membership) is not showing the latest featured book and I want to refuse it. Ugh - I guess I have to mail the card it.

funnybone, I had to email them this month to decline the featured selection. They said they were having a few problems since they upgraded. Just thought I'd let you know, so you can save a stamp.

I don't know how they found out about me, but I just got my first Good Cook Book Club catalog in the mail yesterday...with the berry dessert on the cover? (sigh...) So far, I'm resisting...resisting...resisting. :) All my husband could say was "Didn't you learn a THING from Columbia House??"
Resisting...resisting...resisting... :p

***Sigh*** Just got suckered back in.
I really must get a bigger bookcase now. I am already starting to stack cookbooks on the floor in front of the stuffed bookcase.
But on the other hand, I am looking forward to a new seafood cookbook. Darling BF, the seafood fan in the house, will be soooooo happy when I start cooking more fish dishes that he will ignore the growing pile of cookbooks. :D Maybe he will even insist on buying me that new bookcase. :p
Would someone please post the website? The deal I am looking at on the web is 3/1$ not 4/1$ ??????

I belong to the GOod Cook Book club. The initial offers are nice...but I am ready to buy my last selection and say Adios. Beyond the initial offer, the prices aren't all that great, plus the last 'special' they had on their website never would apply when I put stuff in my cart.
It was 40% off after purchasing any club priced book. Well, I put one specially priced book in, another club priced, and another...yet no discount ever applied to the third book and before I knew it my $$ was up to $80+!
They have Alton Brown's book for $25.95 (plus S&H is $5.49 for the first book and $1.99 for each additional). I just ordered his book from Amazon for $22.75+3.99 S&H=$26.74.
I just have to find some cheap book to buy from them now so I can call it quits!
