Believe it or not you're not the first! Try the search option in the upper right hand corner, it will give you three threads. OR go to www.cookinglight.com/bbs/Forum1/HTML/001163.html (http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/Forum1/HTML/001163.html)
this is the one I checked out and it has a couple of recipes on it.

Hi Lanie,

I have a Dog Biscuit recipe for you.

I've been making Dog Biscuits for our Dog Katie for quite a while now, and she sure likes them. I don't remember how many biscuits the recipe makes, but they are good and the recipe makes an ample amount. I always double the recipe and then make 6 or 7 double batches so I don't have to make them more than once a month.

I first made these for the fun of it and to see if Katie would eat them, well she sure did eat them and now she will only eat the home made ones. She turns away from the store bought kind unless she's certain ther's no home made ones to be had.

Here's the recipe.

DOG BISCUIT RECIPE

2 1/2 CUPS WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR
1/2 CUP NON - FAT DRY MILK - POWDER
1 TEASPOON SUGAR (1/2)
1 TEASPOON SALT (1/2)
6 TABLESPOONS MARGARINE (melted)
1 EGG ( beat with a fork)

MIX INGREDIENTS WITH 1/2 CUP OF COLD WATER. KNEAD FOR 3 MINUTES. DOUGH SHOULD FORM A BALL.

ROLL TO ABOUT 1/2 INCH THICK AND CUT OUT SHAPES WITH COOKIE CUTTER OR PIZZA CUTTER.

BAKE ON A LIGHTLY GREASED COOKIE SHEET FOR 30 MINUTES AT 350°

FOR A VARIATION YOU CAN ADD 3 TABLESPOONS OF LIVER POWDER, OR POWDERED CHICKEN, OR BEEF BOUILLON, OR DRIED SOUP GREENS, OR DRIED SOUP MIX.

I typed up this recipe a long time ago, before I learned that all caps on a computer is like shouting.

I usually cut the Sugar & Salt by half. And even though I do have some Dog Bone shaped Cookie Cutters I use a Pizza cutter to make these. I found that Katie dosen't care what shape these treats are in, and I can use a pizza cutter much faster than a cookie cutter, and rolling out the dough two or three times is a waste of time. So if the Dog dosen't care, I sure don't. And I have since increased the baking time by 10% so I bake them for 33 minutes. Also I only use Land O Lakes Margarine, I find the less expensive brands have too much water in the Margarine, and the dough then gets too sticky and harder to knead.

My one Grandson and I make them for his Dog too.

So far every Dog that's had these treats likes them.

Ed - thank you so much - that is such a cute story. I have 2 golden retrievers and I am VERY careful what they get fed - my young guy 2 yrs old has already had hip surgery - so must keep weight off and just feed a very low protein food. That recipe is great - I am going to get the WW flour this am and make them - and the pizza cutter sounds like a plan - I don't think Chloe or Buddy would care!!! Thanks again - I'll let you know the outcome, which I am sure will be positive! lanie http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Here is one I have always used. You can vary the liquid to make different flavors. I also like to put the dog's name in the bone with the tip of a sharp knife and, of course, you have to use a dog biscuit shaped cookie cutter so your puppy can relate to his food.

Homemade Dog Biscuits
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup rye flour
1 cup cornmeal
2 cups cracked wheat (burghul)
1/2 cup nonfat dry mild
4 tsp salt
1 package dry yeast
2 cups chicken stock or other liquid
1 egg and 1 tablespoon milk (to brush on top)

Combine all the dry ingredients except the yeast. In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. To this, add the chicken stock. (You can use bouillon, pan drippings or water from cooking vegetables, liver, etc.). Add the liquid to the dry ingredients. Knead mixture for about 3 minutes. (Dough will be quite stiff. if too stiff, add extra liquid or an egg.) Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Roll the dough out on a floured board to 1/4 inch thickness, then immediately cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and brush with a wash of egg and milk. Place in oven. After 45 minutes, turn off the heat and leave biscuits overnight in the oven to get bone hard. Makes about 8 dozen biscuits.

Thanks for the great recipes! I have 3 newfoundlands who are definitely my 3 youngest kids. Hearts as big as their sizes. If people were as wonderful as dogs, this world would be a better place.

Amen! My husband and I can have the worst day, and after 2 seconds with Sadie, we're completely fine. She doesn't care about the superficial woes of the world!
