Hey there all you North Carolinians (and anyone else who has made the trek to get good deals on furniture)...

I am now kicking myself for not paying more attention to this when I lived the Furniture Capital of the World.... but alas, when I was a poor college student furnishing my future home was the LAST thing on my mind!

DH and I are heading to Winston-Salem this weekend to attend a reunion thing at Wake Forest. The thing in on Saturday, and we are going up early so that we can do a little furniture shopping! We will be staying in Greensboro, and of course any of the Triad area will be accessible to us.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good discount places around there? I have been reading up on different retailers on a High Point furniture website, but I would love to get some recommendations from ya'll if you've had any good experiences anywhere. We'd also love to get off of the main drag, and maybe head over to Hickory or someplace... maybe to spend even less?

Thanks in advance!! :D :D

OK, so I live here and know about as much about NC furniture as you do :). I think Hickory is too far to drive, IMHO. I don't know how much more money you'd save, but I almost can't imagine it being worth the long drive from W-S. I would stick with High Point, but I honestly don't know the names of any of the places...and since I grew up in Lexington you'd think I could help out. Anyway, good luck and have fun at Wake.

JHolcomb - I would recommend "Boyles" Furniture, which is (I think) is HQ in Hickory, but also has locations in HighPoint and Charlotte (they are called HENDRICKS Fine Furniture in those cities). Here's their web site link:

http://www.boylesfurniture.com/

We've had great success with the one in Hickory, we bought all of our bedroom and dinette furniture there. One place I wouldn't recommend is Furnitureland South (or something like that). We bought our dining room furniture there (our first NC purchase) and the chairs came with the wrong fabric. Yes, they sent the right covers and then almost 2 years later sent me a bill for them (via their laywer!) Definitely, not a well-run operation.

Good Luck - we're now in Wisconsin and it's a little far to do our weekend "commando" drive from Ohio to North Carolina. My DH and I both miss the direct purchase option.

Thanks for mentioning that Boyles is called Hendricks in High Point! That was one of the places we thought we might go in Hickory if it made sense to drive all that way, but now we won't have to!

MIL has had wonderful experiences with Boyles - she will find the piece she wants here in Houston, call them for a quote, buy it, and they will deliver it here. She has to pay for the shipping but doesn't pay the sales tax since it's out of state, and she saves at least 40% on the piece itself.

RebeccaT - I actually had to go find my sale flyer about locations and then realized they're called Hendricks down there. We've also had success with ordering over the phone from Boyles. They have a great selection of lines and it's usually stuff that we can't find in this area.

Hi
I am just bumping this up because we are heading to NC for my brother's wedding in Feb. I am hoping to spend a couple days furniture shopping. Any other recommendations other than Boyle's?

Any websites that you recommend?
Thanks

I don't know the stores in NC, but I thought I would add that I went to a store here and special ordered a piece from them and they matched the best of 3 prices I got from NC companies (including shipping).

Rose Furniture is wonderful (and huge.) I visited Rose, Furnitureland South (really huge) and Boyles in High Point a few weeks ago.

I need to go back and finally decide what I am buying.

I second the recommendation for Boyles furniture.
Also, in Thomasville, NC, there is Thomasville Furniture.
I bought a banquet size (that's what they called it)
mahoganey/cherry dining room table there and I do love it.

We ordered a leather sectional through Louis Shanks. We had to custom order to get the right configuration and size for our room and to make everyone happy (too firm, too soft, wrong color, etc.). The one we got was through Louis Shanks, and I was amazed. We just asked and showed them the fax with the written price quote including delivery and they matched it. We had to pay sales tax, but they uncrate it, inspect it, deliver it in a chi-chi truck and will be there to solve any problems we have -- should there be any. They also match the price on the leather protection warranty -- that saved another $50. The tax supports the state and local economy as well as assures us good service. We were happy to do that.
