View Full Version : LaraW's quote in CL

Someone on another thread mentioned LaraW's quote on page 12 of the May issue. Here it is, as seen in the magazine:

"My husband and I like this easy grilled fish: take a halibut steak and squeeze a half a lemon over it. Sprinkle with pepper, and then top with some parsley. Grill till done. Yummy!"

I read the quote and thought to myself, hmmm... did she really use the word husband, instead of DH? and did she really phrase her statement that way? It sounds a little artificial. or, at least it doesn't quite sound like how we chat here.

Then I thought...hmmm...maybe that is why they chose her quote. They would never choose a quote that used "DH."

I decided to do a search. (I know, I know...don't I have anything more important to think about??)

but anyway, I found the original post. here it is:

Another suggestion on a fairly versatile and easy to prepare fish is halibut. This is DH's favorite, I think. We have prepared it a number of different ways, but we like grilling it the best. We usually will place on a bit of aluminum foil and then top with whatever we are topping with - tonight I think I will try brushing with some adobo sauce and sprinkling with a chipotle chile that I have diced up. We have a can of those for a different recipe, and I thought it sounded good.

We also like one very easy thing to do: take halibut steak/filet and squeeze 1/2 lemon over it. Sprinkle with pepper and then top with some parsley. Grill til done. YUMMY!!!

So I guess CL paraphrased her -- but they make it seem like a direct quote. no big deal, but I thought it was interesting.

I wonder if they always take what is on the bb and just paraphrase it to make it sound good in the magazine.

At least they quoted a regular - seems like lots of times its a quote from some hit and run BB visitor who didn't stick around. Not that there's anything wrong with that, its just always fun to see a name you "know" from the board.

Lara - did they ask your permission first?

I wish they would use some of the funny and interesting things that are talked about here - I can't believe they haven't quoted Jewel or Gail or Grace, etc.

What a surprise to see my name as the title of the thread! I could use a little :) today.

Val, you are right that they paraphrased my quote. I looked it up as well, because I knew I would have said DH. And no, I didn't know they were going to use it. I am not really mad or anything (a little embarrassed if other people in my family besides DH knew how much time I spent on the BB  ), just was pretty surprised when I got a phone call from DH's aunt saying that she had seen the quote, and she was wondering if it was me. I guess I figured that the things that we write here become CL's property, so that's why they did not ask me ahead of time.

Glad someone out there thinks of me as a "regular" besides me

It's interesting that they didn't ask you first, Lara. I had a quote about chestnut puree  in the December issue and received an e-mail in October asking if they could use it and how I'd like my name to appear (gertdog vs. Stephanie).

I was going to make the same observation. I wonder if that's happened with anyone else here (anyone NOT contacted first, I mean...)

...but in any case, congratulations and good to see you in print! :)

I actually have been quoted a couple of times - once in the letter from the editor, and they did not ask to use my quote that time. Again in the Jan/Feb issue in the article with the Top 10 recipes from last year - again, they did not ask to use my quote then, but they also did not credit me for that quote either (I just recognized what I had said!) They used my quote for the CL Cookbook website, and for that, they did ask my permission, but they misquoted me altogether on that one - gave me credit for someone else's quote entirely. So it doesn't appear that there's much rhyme or reason. Ultimately, it doesn't matter to me. And I would bet (although I haven't checked), that when you register to this site, and you have to "agree" to the terms listed, that there is probably some fine print in there that states that anything you write on this site is somehow "property" of the magazine. So in all liklihood, they probably don't have to ask permission anyway.

I'm ALWAYS excited to see myself in the magazine! So to me it doesn't matter if they ask permission or not.

Just so long as they don't quote me giving my weight on the Healthy Living board! :o :p
