Has anyone made a cupcake flower?
A co-worker and I are currently obsessed with these and so far she's made it twice and I've done it once (with the famous lemonade cake recipe for Easter) and I'm about to try again. We have yet to achieve perfection though, so I'm wondering if any of you have made one of these.
You might be wondering... what's a cupcake flower? It's a sort of cupcake arrangement. You take plastic cups, and paper clip them together in concentric circles. So you have one cup in the center, put six cups around that, and keep going outwards until you have the desired size. Because of the slant in the sides of the cup, it forms a domed shape. You then drop one plain frosted cupcake into each cup. Theoretically it sticks up high enough so that you won't notice the cups, but we've also had the opposite problem where the cups were too small and it was hard to shove them in there and they risked popping out (I lost a cupcake on the porch on my way to Easter dinner...) After they're in their cups, you can decorate them with icing and create a flower (we've also thought that you could make a soccer ball, or some other round shape).
So, my question is, has anyone made one of these before? What is the perfect-sized cup? Is there any brand that works better? Any great decorating ideas?

TIA for any insight you might have.

I don't have any tips for you, but I'm bumping this up because I'm intrigued by the idea! What a neat idea for a spring party or get-together.

Sounds very intriguing! What size plastic cups did you use?

So far, we have tried two sizes of generic white plastic cups from KMart - four ounce (too small) and six ounce (too large). Five ounce doesn't exist as far as I know, so I'm wondering if a different brand might work. It does make a really impressive display, and it's not too difficult. It's a really good thing to bring in for a work birthday because you don't have to worry about knives, forks, or plates.

Here's a thought ... what ab out the clear plastic glasses that you serve wine in? They're short and squat, not sure about the actual ounces in it. I've seen a giant ball made out of them (with lights stuck inside) for holiday decorations. I'd think that cupcakes would fir nicely in it?

I just priced some 5 oz cups at BJ's (for a cancer society fund-raiser) yesterday. I believe that is the standard size for "Dixie Kitchen Cups" and other dispensers.
