I have always wondered can butter be used instead of shortening when baking? Thanks!

Rule of thumb I learned is that butter can be substituted for shortening as follows:
1 cup shortening = 1 1/8 c butter
Also, decrease salt called for in recipe by 1/2 tsp. You will also get a more buttery taste in the finished product than was intended.
This has always worked for me.

I have always heard that you can substitute applesauce for shortening. However I don't know how much you would use, I would think the same amount as the shortening but not exactly sure. Hope this helps.
