I got a postcard today from Eating Well. It said that since the interest in restarting the mag. has been so positive they are doing it. I'll receive my first issue in June, along with the Dessert Recipe Sampler.
The price will be $16.95 for the year-the lowest price that will be offered.
Info on the mag.-www.eatingwell.com
I've never even seen this mag. I'm just going on way all you bber's are saying.

Oh yay! I've been eagerly awaiting it ever since we all signed up. I was thinking if their first issue was June it should be coming really soon - glad to hear it is. Yippee!

I got the postcard today too and I was sort of surprised by it. I had sent a couple of gift subscriptions and they already notified the people I gave them to via e-mail, (I got thank you notes and everything) so I didn't know there was any question about them actually going through with it.
But I am really super happy they are as I loved loved loved the magazine before!:)

Me three! I'm a bit surprised, since mail delivery here is sort of peculiar where anything but first class mail is concerned. :)
Is the "Charter Issue" the same thing as the 'first issue' ? (They aren't separate, or anything, are they?) Is this a dumb question??
I'm asking anyhoo, since CL BB'ers know everything. :)

I got mine yesterday also! I've never seen this magazine before, but from the 'free' recipes on their site, they sure seem good! Looking forward to that June issue.
For those of you who have subscribed before, do they have lots and lots of recipes? I noticed some books really don't carry that many.

I got my postcard yesterday too. I am sooooo excited!!! I used to love this mag & I can't wait to see what the new one will be like. If it's like the old one, there will be lots of recipes, yorkshirepud. It had a format like CL with articles in the beginning and then recipes starting partway through.

Does anyone know how many issues are published a year? I thought I read 4 but now I can't find where I read that. Even if it is, I am such a sucker for cooking magazines!

I have not received a postcard advising me re "Eating Well."
I received plenty re "Coastal Living" and received the 2 trial copies.
How can I get a trial copy of "Eating Well?"
TIA.

katygirl, according to the website they'll publish quarterly. The subscription rate seems a bit high for only four issues but the rave reviews I read about the magazine when the first thread came up made me want to try it. And there's no advertising so the subscription price has to cover the costs. Can't wait to see the first issue!

Got my postcard today too! I used to be a subscriber and still have several of their issues - made their roasted sweet and Yukon potato recipe last night! The magazine is in shreds and I really should copy the recipes I want to keep - wonder if they will repeat any of them. The magazine used to be a monthly periodical, but maybe they are just testing the waters with a quarterly. Can't wait!
I received my postcard, also. The former magazine was bimonthly and in the Jan/Feb 1994 copy there are 44 recipes, as well as articles. I don't remember if the postcard said 4 or 6 issues per year, but any of you newbies will not be disappointed in the magazine.

I'm disappointed. I just figured it was monthly. Over $4 an issue does seem like a lot since they said it was the LOW intro. price.

i also recieved the card==ithought from the wording --they assumed you had already subscribed. i had been a subscriber from '92 to '99. it was nice, but for me it was not down to earth enough==too much about tuscany ect.

Remember that the new Eating Well will have no advertisements, like Cook's Illustrated. That mag is $5 an issue too, but in my opinion worth every penny!
I don't believe that signing up for the charter issue obligates you to subscribing. I think you have to return an invoice either with payment or with the words "CANCEL" written on it.

renee,
where did you see that there would be no ads?
the old EW had ads.

Hi Val,
On the Eating Well website under "About Us" in the section about the Relaunch, they talk about the new EW having no commercial advertising and being "unfettered" by not being under the undo influence of advertisers.
I'm psyched about this! That's one of the things I really like about Cooks Illustrated. They can be straight with us about the performance, taste, etc of products because the don't have to have any brand loyalty.

thanks, renee!
that is good to know.
maybe, with no ads, one issue of EW might be the equivalent of three cooking mags with ads. so that might make up for the "quarterly" thing. one can hope, anyway.

for posting this info..I have never looked through this magazine, I vaguely remember hearing about it though. I subscribed for the free charter issue. Thanks again, for posting..this would have been one more thing that had passed me by, without me knowing. I looked at the recipes on their website...looks very yummy.
And to all of you, I'm so glad this site is here with all you wonderful people. You have seriously changed my life. I love the way I cook, with your helpful suggestions and recipe modifications to really make a dish perfect. ;)
Am I getting sappy here:confused: NAH!!

I finally got my postcard today and will be waiting patiently for the mailman to bring me my new magazine! It shouldn't be long now for a June issue!

I'm so sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, if I remember correctly the first issue will be published in June. I don't think any of us will be receiving on within the next three weeks or so.
Perhaps a trip to the library to borrow a Cooks Illustrated to help bridge the gap...

I thought my postcard said that I'd be getting the issue in June.
I went on the website and it does say for the $16.95 You get: the charter issue, 4 quarterly issues, and the dessert cookbook. So I guess the charter issue isn't really the first issue.

For instance, the June issue will cover July, August and September (Summer). The next issue will cover October, November, December (Autumn and the Holidays). The third will be January, February and March (Winter). And the last will be April, May, and June (Spring).
I don't know any inside information, but this seems logical to me. It would work with the flow of produce on the market and Judeo/Christian Holidays etc. If this is the case, I expect the first issue to come in mid to late June and cover July, August and September.
Just my Opinion,
Renée

Visted the website ... usual story ... samples only available in the US and Canada.
Oh well ... sounds like a great magazine, too (sigh).

val,
my husband's explanation is this:
"Aus" for Australia...but it's 3 letters..."Oz" is only 2...:D
They shorten EVERYTHING...took me a bit to get used to it...we had many months of me saying "spell it, no way is that a word!"...

thanks.
I was wondering if it had to do with the Wizard of Oz. But that would be too strange...

The WW Cook Books are quite good, Gabby. But you taking your suitcase and filling it with books/mags from Oz is the equivalent to me filling mine with books/mags from the US/Canada (or subscribing);) .

Maree

Val, I partially agree with your husband. We do tend to shorten things.
However, Australia is pronounced (by us) as "Oz-tralia" ... *not* "Or-stralia".
Hence, "Oz".
Hope that helps!

Ooops, that should have been "Gabby" *not* Val (re Oz) ... sorry. Time I went to bed, I think!
