I just made the first dinner from C/L, where I threw the entire meal away (5/98). It was so spicy it was impossible for us to eat. Unfortunately, even the carrots I made to go with it (apple glazed carrots with bacon)were too spicy.

I have purchased all the ingrediants to make this dish- what made it so spicy? It looks so good and I was going to make it Friday- is there any way to modify it?!

I am at work, but if I remember correctly, the chicken cutlets took 1/4 cp. of spicy mustard plus 1/4 tsp. of ground red pepper. This was WAY too much for us. I would cut back on both the mustard and the pepper. Let me know what you think of it.

I also made this. I really didn't think it was too spicy, so I think it is just to your taste!
I wasn't pleased with the way the apple glaze came out, though. It kind of hardened in the oven. I thought the gorgonzola grits were good, though. Interesting.

This is very interesting to me. My husband likes this so much, he requests it from time to time. I will add, though, that he doesn't like spicy stuff at all so I just omit the red pepper.

I made the Gorgonzola Grits tonight with another chicken dish and I must say I was disappointed with how they turned out. The end result was on the runny side so I had to serve them in little ramekin bowls. My husband dutifully ate his bowlful, but when I asked if I should put these in his lunch tomorrow (he ALWAYS willingly takes leftovers for lunch!), he commented, "Let's just say I will never eat those again." This is a first folks... This is the man who never refuses my leftovers. Needless to say the remainder of the grits were fed to the garbage disposal!!! Enough said.
Sadly Yours,
Peggy

Wow, I sorry you all didn't like this dish. This is one of those recipes I make quite often. It is so delicious. I don't find the chicken to be too spicy at all. I have found that you have to add about a 1/2 cup or so more of the grits to get a nice thick consistency. I love gorgonzola cheese. Well, I guess the differences in people's taste is what makes life interesting!

Ughh! Gag! Gross! This was the worst recipe I have ever made from CL. In fact - it is one of the worst recipes I can recall ever making. Oh, it was just awful! There was another more recent thread praising this recipe and I just couldn't bear to bring that to to top because it had a thumbs up sign next to it! (Silly me - I saw the thumbs up and figured - ok, let's have this tonight.)
I measure everything and used all of specified ingredients - including real Gorgonzola cheese - except I had to leave out the cayenne pepper because I was serving to a child. Even cayenne pepper could not have saved this dish. It was also ugly - very unappetizing presentation. The chicken tasted so-so, but the grits were really a waste. I am a true grits lover and I coulldn't help thinking how I'd wasted a nice batch of grits. DH said we could fix holes in the roof with it. We tossed out dinner in the trash and had PB&J for supper instead. :(

heatherfeather,
I empathize with your experience. As you can see two posts up I had a similar one. I still can't believe the CL chose that as their "Back to the Best" for the month.

i thought it sounded pretty gross, so we omitted the gorgonzola grits and just had the spicy-apple-chicken part. i didn't find it spicy, and it wasn't anything to write home about. oh well. i'm just glad i didn't make those grits! yuck!

I have mixed feelings about the recipe. It's not a repeat recipe. The chicken was good, not as spicy as I had expected. The grits were a bit too gorgonzola for me. I made more grits to mellow the cheese flavor, so I enjoyed the leftovers the next day much more than the original.
