My kitties name is Shelby....originally named after the car.
Somehow it suits her, although she has not lived up to the "fast" image, since she spends most of her days napping!
I love her to death though and cannot imagine not having her around!!!!!
I prefer more "people like" names to cutesy pet names, but still I have had a few cutesy named pets as well!! (although I must make sure never to name a pet a name I want to keep for my future children!)
I had two hermit crabs in junior high named Kris and Kross after a couple very young "rappers", a Siamese named Blue (the eyes - I really liked her but she was vicious), a pony named Pretty Boy (he is still around, but about 22 years old now and I have not seen him in a while since he lives at my "estranged" grandparents), my other grandparents had two Siamese (the sisters of mine) named Ming and Ling, etc.
My sister went through three gerbils - Hershey, Cadbury and Fudge, My brothers hamster Missy. When I left home they missed Shelby so adoped the cats Minout (I think all french families have a cat named Minout at least once, and they adopted her with that name already) and Mambo (they are all dancers :p ) My close friends kitty is named Pickles. My dad's dogs are Cisco (who is named from horse in Dancing with wolves, but he just got diagnosed with cancer) and Sassy.
Okay, there are more but can't remember anymore - my brain and my heart (I miss many of them that aren't with us anymore) hurt.

Our cats, two white himalayans, are named Linus and Schroeder. DH's family has a tradition of naming pets after Peanuts characters (Snoopy, Charlie, Lucy, and so forth) so we kept it up.
Growing up, I had a dog, Scruffy (who looked just like Benji!) and two cats, Shadow (I wasn't very creative at age 11) and K.C. (for Kitty Cat - my brother was even less creative).
I really haven't had a lot of pets in my life; I have been blessed in that my pets have tended to live a long time, so I haven't had to name that many animals!
My SIL's cat is named Kudzu, which I think is hilarious.

My golden's name is Caddie. A typical golden, she often carries things around in her mouth. (Club Cover Caddie being more of her full name).
My cats names (siblings) are Merc(ury) and Apollo after both the gods and space programs. They're very curious, exploratory creatures with god-like complexes of course! I adopted them from a rescue group that had named them Chico & Chalupa (I'm not even sure which was which anymore).
As a kid I had another golden named Cham (as in Holiday Champaign) - very bubbly personality. My cat was named Gypsy after my grandmother's horse.

Lessee...my first dog was a chihuahua/terrier mix named Tug because you had to 'tug' him on his leash. What do you expect, I was 3 years old?
My second dog was a coyote/shepherd mix named Lady, then we had a purebred German Shepherd named Amos Moses (his AKC registered name since he was part of the first litter of the two parents or some such happy AKC stuff...). I had a dachshund named Snoopy for about 2 weeks before he ran away from home. :( His claim to fame was that he walked sideways. :p I had a gorgeous Lhasa Apso/Shihtzu mix named Shami that lived to be 21 years old! :)
I had an Albino cockatiel named Jesse that went everywhere with me, a Netherland Dwarf bunny named Bailey that I had litterbox-trained and leash-trained, and then had to give up because she wouldn't share her home with Riley, who is my terrier/poodle/???? mutt! ;) Bailey developed quite an attitude regarding Riley and wouldn't stop thumping her back foot like a gunshot when she was running around the house!
Currently, we still have Riley and I have a Siberian Husky named Sasha!

Well, I wasn't too creative with my first dog's name "Rocky". But I definitely got more creative after that.
Dogs:
Chloe and Tawnee (both were rescued and came with those names.)
Cats:
Killer
Slinky
Crunch
Ven (her name was originally Lavender, named by the boys that owned the mom. I shortened it to Ven, which is Danish for friend. Then it became Vendo, from the movie "The 13th Warrior", then Vendozer, now we mostly call her Dozer, which is what she does a lot:p )
Horses:
Beau Geste (actually my mom named that one)
Tyler
Gilco
Cockleburr
Crickett
Dancer
Rainy
Travis
Shackleton (Shack)
That's the whole history. Currently, we have Chloe, Tawnee, Slinky, Ven, and Shack (plus a foster horse, Smoothie). Although DH keeps begging me for another Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy (Tawnee's also a Ridgeback).
We have two dogs whose names are Mickey and Daisy Mae. They are Basset Hounds. I wanted to name the male Elvis, but DH wasn't crazy about that name....
We also have a guinea pig who was named Hoagie by DD. I have no idea where she came up with that name, but it fits. He's about as big as a hoagie, and my dogs would probably love to eat him for lunch! :)

DS1 (age 15) is a Star Trek fan, so he named his huge orange tabby Dax, for one of the characters. His "other parents" (don't get me started) are also Star Trek fans, and they have a black Scottie named Geordie. Get it...Geordie LaForge...the guy who took Mr.Scott's post...black guy...
Guess ya had to be there...
When I was a kid, we had a bird dog. When it came time to name him, I thought I was offering a name that I had heard all my life for dogs...turns out that not too many people name their dogs Trouser. (Bowser) Fortunately. he ended up being named Daddy Bird. :D

Currently, our three beagles are Casey, Nacho, and Abbey. Casey just sounded like a cute name for her. We named Nacho after he expressed interest in that commercial (was it Old El Paso?) with the big guy dancing around singing "nacho, nacho man" (to the tune of "Macho Man"). Abbey is named for the Beatles' last album, Abbey Road. Our cat came to us already named, Sara. Our bird is named Tuck -- he's a Quaker parakeet, aka monk parakeet -- get it, Friar Tuck? We call him Tuck-Tuck. It suits him.
Growing up, we always had pets. When we were really young, we had two dogs that I don't remember much - Rudy and Ruffy. Later, we had another dog named Fifi (a toy poodle - ingenuous, huh?), a cat named Tagalong, and a hamster named Jeremy (OK, so we were stupid kids!).
Other pets that DH and I have owned and lost were a beagle named Toby, a hamster named Molly (after Desmond & Molly - DH is a big Beatles fan, as you can tell), and a lop-eared bunny named Larry.

I love reading what other people name their pets. The five cats are: Smokey, River, Lilly, Peaches and Angel. The two horses are: Toy (The ToyMaker) and Sonny (Impressive Sonata). And the lone dog is Boomer.

I had lots of animals growing up. Dogs named Blackie, Heidi, Popcorn (a little white toy poodle that looked like a kernel of popped popcorn!), Cochise (half St. Bernard, half something else), and cats named Mietze Katz (we called her Mitzi), Pussywillow, Kitty (how original), and a couple others whose names escape me right now.
My last dog was named Gonzo (it came from the German word Gans, which means duck - she was a duck hunting dog), and my two dogs now are Brandy and Bella. Brandy is named because she is the color of Brandy (the kind in the bottle), and Bella is named because she is BEAUTIFUL!! (She really, really is!)

Our 2 Pointers are named Tupper and Colby after lakes in the Adirondacks- we visit the area several times a year & wanted to bring a little of the 'dacks home.
When I went through my hamster phase in college, they had pretty hamster-like names: Goober, Skippy, Scooter & Hammy (how original!).
Growing up, our first dog was named Pudgie (though he wasn't). Then we got a Golden Retriever named- hold on to your hat- Goldie! (Both pets named by my parents. Thank goodness I ended up with a decent name, I could have just been "Girl" or "Kid.")

LOL! I had a boyfriend in college who'd named his dog after a character in Star Trek-- Savik.
My first pet was a SPCA cat named T.C., had the name when we got him. My ex and I had a Springer Spaniel named Chuck--she was a girl. He'd had a Springer when he was growing up with that name and I didn't have any say in it! (Or lots of other things, but that's another thread.)
DH and I have two dogs-- Murray, a corgi mix from the SPCA, named after Murray on Mad About You. I just loved that name for a dog! She's also a girl, but she doesn't know it, so Murray fits her to a T.
We got our other dog about a year and a half ago, his name is Preston. He's a border collie terrier mix, and just as mellow of a love as you could ask for. Plus the brains of a tub of cool whip. :p

My babies:
Calloipe is my shaded silver persian. She allows us to live in her house and sleep in her bed with her. She was a present from DH the first Christmas after we were married.
Basie is our barn cat. We got her when we lived in North carolina.
Maddie is our SPCA kitty. We got her this past CHristmas.
I LOVE my children!

The dog is Lara; she's a Borzoi, hence the Russian name. The two cats are Natasha and Gizmo. We adopted Natasha from the Humane Society. She's an all white Angora with a grey "tiara." She just looked very Russian when we first met her. Gizmo was adopted from the same shelter as a 2-month old kitten; he just reminded us too much of the pet gremlin in the movie Gremlins.
Prior to those three, we had a dog named Cassie (given to her by her mother's owner) and two cats that were originally DW's before we met. They were Phoebe & Langley; DW was a big All My Children fan!

The dog we had when I was a kid was a purebred Great Dane named Zeb and the golden retreiver we had up until just a few years ago was named Spud (he already had that name).
We are getting another dog as soon as we get our fence completed and we've already decided to name it Tartuffe .

Also Kunte Kinte. Also the host of "Reading Rainbow." Everytime we watch TNG and Geordie comes on I have to sing the theme song to Reading Rainbow. "Iiiiiiiii can fly anywhhhherre...take a look, it's in a book, a reading rainbooow."
Our cat is Tiva, short for Sativa, which is a derivitive of the Latin verb Sativus which means to domesticate. So she's like "the domesticated one" Anyway, I think it's like the opposite of Sylvester (I think...seeing as how I never took Latin, I could be waaaay off base)...anyway, lots of plants have the name sativa in them (avena sativa is the kind of oatmeal they put in Aveeno)and we started calling her Tiva because we were afraid that mom and dad would catch on to the fact that one of the species of cannibus is cannibus sativa...we named her when we were still in college (LOL) and while we're way over that phase, I still love her name. We usually call her Tiva or Teev. Oh, we adopted Teev when she was 1---her original name was Carmen, and it just did not fit her AT ALL!!
Growing up we were only allowed to have hamsters (mean little devils) because my mom was allergic all the good pets and she couldn't stand the tails on mice, rats, or gerbils...so hamsters it was. The only one I remember the name of was the one I had in 7th grade that I named Rastis from an Alice Walker short story. We also had gerbils when DH and I first started living together named Ghengis and Alobar. Oh, growing up we did have two dogs. The first one I don't remember (I was about 1), but his name was Jasper. He bit me in the face after he got his distemper shot and had to be put down. We also had Yogi when I was in 4th grade, but he was killed by two larger dogs when he got out of our yard. Dogs were kind of a tragedy in our house.
MIL's cats are Toonces (as in the driving cat) and Cherokee (named by SIL who loved Duke basketball in the early 90s-as in Cherokee Parks).
If we ever get a dog, I have dibs on naming him. I want to name him "Nugent" as in Ted and call him "The Nuge." If we ever have a boy cat, his name will be Sergio.

DBF's dog (she's kind of a "Benji" dog, too) is Bitters. She came with the name, but I think it's kind of sweet (so to speak!). Her previous "owner" used to beat her with an electrical cord, though, so I wonder if she wasn't named for his favorite mixer?? :( Her late companion was a cocker spaniel (he looked just like a real-life "Lady") named Bogart. A real bon vivant!
The family next door is Chinese, and the mom/grandma is super sweet and friendly and speaks limited English: She named her cats "Popcorn" -because he jumped around a lot- and "More Mellow" because he did not! :p We loved that! Somehow, I don't think of "mellow" as a fundamental ESL word... She's wonderful.
Jewel, I cannot believe Shami lived to 21!!:) Is that some kind of record?

Wow! There are a lot of pets that I am good friends and relatives to!!
My Cockatiel's name is Cordel. He was Cordelia until I found out that he is a male. His middle name is Beakman and the name inspired by the habit that he has that defines him as a male. We won't go there.  When I want him to be quiet or am scolding him, I call him by his full name.
My roomie has 2 beagles: Peggy and Lucie whom I have known for many years. Like people, it is hard watching them get old as they are 13 and 14. They are deaf and sleep alot.
My sister has been adopted by 4 cats within the last 3 years. Honey, a Siamese(he answers to this), but we all think that he should be Elvis for he is definitely the king of the household. She also has Billy Bob, a handsome gray cat that used to be skinny and have the mange. I named him because some cruel )*(&(* cut off his tail. He's a sweetheart!! She also has Tommy, an orange cat and a lover. Kato, is a crosseyed black and white cat who is squeamish around others but loves my BIL. Go figure. She also has a handsome rabbit named Spot. No explanation needed.
A good friend has a black lab named Kaiser. Another has a cockatiel named Emma (aka: Enema), other birds named Colin, and Patrick. Her lab is Maude. Her 4 cats are: Michael, Timothy Charles Wilson (Timmy Willy), Sophie, and Ian. Whew!!! I won't even go into my Aunt's pets.

We have had so many animals in my lifetime that I can't remember all their names, but do remember those most remarkable....though aren't they all! My mother unofficially bred persians so we always had a zillion cats, most noteworthy were the Goldust Twins who we called Fatty and Skinny (so creative....but I was only 2), both cats were gold and would mate at the same time with the same male and then we'd have 16 cats instead of two. Of their generations of offspring we had Cleopatra (Cleo) , Karisma . Then Cleo Two had kittens, and I traded my Peabody , who was an adult, for two of the kittens, Sassy and B.C. (Black Cat) named by my daughter, then aged 2. Sassy was very active, so soon to follow were: Freckles, Sneakers (Sneak for short) and then we got Meowser . The cats did well with our dogs, first a Siberian named Kimo who died from gastrotortion. So we got Doc a border collie-mix, and then a golden retriever named Cody . Sassy remained Queen of the kingdom and we finally had to help her to heaven when she was 18. By then we had a black lab named Zeke , who soon mated with a Siberian and gave us Peabo . Sassy was replaced by Pooh . another long haired cat, and my daughter adopted, brought home and left another long haired gold cat named Prairiedog because he would sit up like a real one. Now we still have the 12 year old black lab Zeke and a new lab Katie , who both get along swimmingly with our 5 year old black long haired cat Crazy Baby who loves to sleep with the dogs.
My grown children would, of course, remember any I have forgotten and chastize me, for although we named the four ducks and all the aquarium fish ( all deceased), for the life of me I can't remember their names now. Then there were two gerbals Napolean and Shakespeare. A box turtle named Homer was with us at one time, also. Whew! Guess you could say we love our animals!:D :D

When we found our 6 month old Pug/Corgi/unidentified terrier mix at the Humane Society in January 1994, she was named "Honey". This lasted about 3 days- I looked at her one morning and said Lucy! Her ears perked up, her tail went wild, and Lucy it was. Lucy is the name of my favorite character in C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia.
In addition to Lucy, she answers to: Lucita, Lucinda, Lucy Lu, Lulu, L.J., Lucy-Jo, Miss Lucy, Little Girl, Beetlehead, Peanut, Chocolate Face, Pickle Nose, Pickle Breath, Lucy J. MacGillicuddy. :D

Growing up there were Schatsie(sp?), a long-haired daschund; Max, a bird-dog mix (I bought him for $1.75 and he lived to be 22); Butch, a toy daschund but his name fit his personality; Cindy, a poodle that was raised with Max & Butch and thought she was a boy dog(Leg lifter :o ).
My dog when I was single was a Spitz named Puka. First cat was a Siamese/Tabby named Nikki. Current cat is a Tabby/Siamese named Squeaker since he doesn't bother to really meow!
First family dog was a black lab/greyhound named Roxie. Then came Jolee, a blue healer/Australian shephard. And then there is Charlie a who knows what mix (first guess would be basset/springer spaniel/sheltie).
DS #3 had a hamster named Dave and currently has a gunia pig named Cinnamon.
DS #2 had 2 ferrets named Princess and Pickles.
Horses are Player, Rascal, Anna Mae, & Crystal. Donkey named Tex and a mule foal named Paddy since he was born on March 16th.

My black cat is Vladimir, or Vlad. Named him after Dracula. He's also known as Handsome and Fraidy cat because he's shy.
We used to have a cat named Ferdinand (after the bull) because he was caught outside sniffing flowers. He used to ring the door bell when he wanted in the house
I won't go into all the pets/names, but for a while we had 8 cats and 2 dogs. I don't every remember having only one pet. Each had several names. The most fun began life as "Your Cat" courtesy of my older brother. That became "Top Cat", by Mom. Got shortened to T.C., and finally she became "Grey Cat". Used to have friends come over. "What's the grey cat's name" to which I enjoyed answering "Grey Cat".

Diana,
Jesse James is precious, with his sad puppy eyes. Actually, he just looks tuckered out after a day of cute & silly puppy mischief! :D Thanks for sharing the photo. How old is he?
I'm also a Retriever lover, having grown up with Golden Retrievers and having also had one of my own, named Teddy. He was a real sweetie! :)

Last year my three very old cats died within just a few months of each other and since then we have accumulated an embarrassing number of cats.
We already had Junior and Leroy, both neighborhood strays who were happy to move inside to stay. Now we have Otis and Grady (both homeless cats my vet talked me into taking), Ozzie and the Old Man. The Old Man is another neighborhood stray who the vet says is well over 10 years old, for reasons I won't share we started calling him the old toot and now he answers to Toot as well as Old Man. We also have a dog named Lucy who DH found before we met and usually calls BooBoo.

My dogs growing up were Boozer (he liked beer and he looked like benji! He lived to be 18 years old) and Schooner a dalmation who is still going strong at 12!
Dh and I have a white shepherd which we named Hera (after the goddess, though the first night we had her she was going to get named something like Beezlebub or Hitler.):D
We are in the process of looking for a brown and black shepherd so Hera has a friend and we can name him Zeus!
When I was little I had every stray cat in the neighborhood. The only names I remember were Scaredy Cat (for obvious reasons) and Lucky (named for the cat on Alf)!
My brother and I once had a snake and we named him Lips
and lizards named Izzard, Lizzard and Gizzard! How original!:D

Gertie is our lab mix (and that's where my screen name comes from). When we met her at the SPCA, she was a feisty little puppy. We were deciding between Maggie and Gertie, and Gertie won out because it seemed to fit a feisty, naughty little puppy a bit better.
Her full name is Gertrude Viola because when she was young, she used to have sudden outbursts of tearing around the house, doing figure 8s in the living room, etc. with her ears flat back and a scary gleam in her eye. We decided she had a slightly nutty alter ego, so she needed a second name. My DF had grown up hearing older relatives talk about (this is terrible, sorry) Crazy Aunt Vi, but he never met her and has no idea what the story is. We liked the way Gertrude Viola sounded, so that's what it is.
Growing up, we had a Lhasa Apso named Moppett, a brittany spaniel named Freckles, 3 goldfish named Snap, Crackle, and Pop , two gerbils named Kinky and Twinky (I named them when I was 3), a series of hamsters named Hammie and a long-term beloved guinea pig named Guinea.
Clearly we were not creative children. :D

We had Irish setters when I was growing up the first one (I don't really remember) was named Sean and the second was named Clancy. Clancy was a huge, dumb lovable guy who lived to be about 14, which is ancient for an IS.
I had a gerbil as a kid named Julius. I have no idea where I got that.
We adopted a cat from a friend who was moving back to Australia, she was named CC. I think it was originally Cool Cat, but had morphed into Crazy Cat. We didn't get a long. She had some serious issues with my ankles and knee caps...she had to be relocated to a new home.
Our current love is Otis, named for Otis Campbell! Anyone? He was the big, dumb loveable drunk on The Andy Griffith show. His name is fitting for a predominantly bloodhound mix, although he didn't get quite as big as we thought. (thank goodness!) Alternative names include Handsome, Stinky and Crusty...all true and self explanatory!;)
My niece has Otis' litter mate, his name is Dudley, other friends pets names are Wyatt, Yogi, Daphne (very fitting for this lady), Oreo, Angus (scottish terrier), All of these are dogs. Friends of ours adopted a black and white spotte dog and a black and white spotted cat from the apl on the same day we always tease that they are litter mates their names are Spot (the dog I think) and Dot the cat. Some other friends have 2 cats from the same litter named Jake and Elwood.

When I was really little, we had a dog named Boo. Boo had puppies so my mom got rid of her and all but one puppy, which she named Barry (after her boyfriend at the time). Okaaaaayyy... Anyway, Barry ran away so we got my step-mother's dog. They moved and couldn't keep her. Her name was Augie. Love that name for a dog. It was great.
Augie died at 17 and then I got Lindsey (must mean "torture" in some foreign language- this dog is crazy!).
We had cats, too. The first two were strays that I took in and we never really named them, just used nicknames. When we went to the vet, we said the one cat's name was Socks because he had white feet. The other one was all black so we called him Midnight. He didn't live with us that long. He just up and died one day. Weird. Socks (aka "kitty no name") ran away when we moved :(. We put up ads and some woman offered us a kitten from her litter. My sister named him Stryper after the Christian rock band. I still have this cat, almost 16 years later!
DH's dog was named Jed. We lost him in March at the ripe old age of 14 1/2. He was a big (102lb) black lab mix.

Our dog's name is Blitzen. He's a golden retriever, and he's a service dog from Canine Assistants. His litter was the Reindeer litter. There were 8 pups, so they had everything except Rudolph. They name all of the litters by themes since there's so many puppies per litter. They've used country music stars, the Friends cast, M*A*S*H, and many others. Since Blitzen is out in the public so much (He's been to movies, the opera, a play reading, and a concert--and we've only had him 4 months. He's a well-cultured dog!), we often are asked his name. Most people don't understand what we're saying is his name at first, then we say, "You know, like the reindeer", and the little light bulb comes on. Blizten also answers to Blitz, Blitzkrieg (sp?), Blitzeroni, and Blitzonian (like the Smithsonian). Right now we're working on Doggie!

I love the name Caldonia. Do you listen to the 1945 original of that song? It makes me laugh everytime I hear it.
"Caldonia...
Caldonia...
A what makes your big head so hard?

Totally!! That's where we got her name. I found her curled up next to a dumpster almost dead (she had a huge infected gash in her neck). We nursed her back to health. And that one line ("long, lean, and lanky ain't got nothin' to eat. She's my baby, love her just the same. Crazy about my baby 'cause Caldonia is her name.") just seemed to fit her. And she was so tiny when we got her, now after 2 years she's really "rounded out". :D

Our current love is Otis, named for Otis Campbell! Anyone? He was the big, dumb loveable drunk on The Andy Griffith show.
Peggy C, our cat, Otis, is also named for the character on Andy Griffith. The people we got him from found a whole litter of abandoned kittens and named them all after characters on Andy Griffith. Originally Otis was named Ernest T but we didn't think it fit him so we changed it to Otis. Our cat, Grady is named after Grady on Sanford and Son and also for my father's neighbor, Grady BoBo, which I have always thought was such a funny name.

Also when I walk Otis, every once in while we pass a guy walking his dog Floyd. (as in the barber!)LOL!

Growing up I had a pair of gerbils named Frisco and Felicia- can you tell I liked GH?
We had a few dogs- Kippy, Pepper(black dog, weren't we creative :) ), Jack all of which were mixes of sorts. I am also "sister" to a daschund named Alexshort for Alexander Bell Deernose.
I am the proud mother of Maximillian Baron Bowers. He is also a daschund, and Baron is a German name meaning "strong". He answers mainly to Max, but there so many nicknames, I don't think I could get them all down :o :p :D
Our current cats are Fred and Ginger, but they did not come as a "set" -- Fred is 15, and Ginger is 11 months.
Fred the cat was named for Fred Astaire, but he (the cat) turned out to be extremely clumsy, particularly as cats go, so the name is not at all appropriate. He has about a thousand nicknames -- Fredskin and Fredoodle are the ones we're using most at the moment.
Ginger is not ginger-colored -- she's a sleek, muscular, slinky black cat. Her fur was kind of blue-gray when we got her as a tiny kitten, but it's getting darker as she gets older. She is very graceful, though. Their photos are back on the famous "photo thread."
Our previous cats were Barney (named for Barney Rubble, NOT Barney the annoying purple dinosaur) and Tiger, who lived to be 17. They both died last year. Here are two cute pictures of Barney: as a kitten, and at 11 years old.

Some years ago, a friend gave one of her cats one of the best names I ever heard: Meowhead.
Growing up had a basset hound named Patches, based on the tri colors patches she had on her. Shortly before we lost her at 13, we got a short haired Dachshund named Rodger Red Dodger Dog (yes that really was his name on his papers)
DH and I have a basset hound of our own named Bailey Bleu. He is quite the opposite of our family dog growing up( patches favorite activity was sleeping) in that he has more energy than he knows what to do with and loves to go for mile long walks. He is routinely greeted by passer-bys with the comment "Oh my G-d he is so long".

I got my seven-year-old tortoise-shell kitty from a friend who was going to law school in San Francisco and couldn't take her along. Knowing I'd be a sucker, he asked me if I'd take her in and not listening to my brain but my heart, did. She came with the name Gwen, but through the years, DBF and I started calling her Gigi (or GG as he spelled it), and it stuck. She also answers to Gwendolyn, Little G, and Gigi-Bean (a name DBF started saying, who knows why! :) )

I just remembered one more, we used to live in a double that DH='s cousin owned and lived in the upper half. Well since we were family we'd leave are internal doors unlocked if not open and she had 3 cats. Lucy and Rocco (originaly Ricky, but Rocco fit him better) who were litter mates and the third one was Buddy (we actually weren't really sure he existed except in her mind;)). Anyways Rocco was this big adorable grey colored clutz and Lucy was all lady. We took to calling her Cool LG for lucy girlfriend!

My dog is an Alaskan Malamute/St. Bernard mix named Harley
Here he is w/ my nephew.
http://www.geocities.com/jenburnes/images/Dakota/HarleyDakota.jpg
And he's had 2 hip surgeries--here's a before/after shot. This was when he was just over 1 year old. He's 26 months now and weighs 140 lbs!
http://www.geocities.com/jenburnes/images/Harley/bef_aft.jpg
I did have 2 lovebirds--Zoey and Maisy.
Growing up, I had sheep for 4-H. The first ones were Bambi and Thumper. One of my favorites w/ a ewe we bred named Sheba Lousie.
Harley's mom is a Malamute--her name is Aspen. She is my parent's dog. Other malamutes we've had over the years are Prince and Kita.
Also, Duke, Thunder and Lightning--who were Blue Heeler sisters. One had a dark gray back, the other a blue/silver grey back.
Had a cat named Cujo and another named B.B. for Big Brat or Big Baby.
Hey, my pictures aren't working now? They were initially. ANyway, Harley pictures are at http://www.geocities.com/jenburnes/harley.html

My current cat is named Celie (after Miss Celie in The Color Purple) because when we adopted her they told us she had a sister that was adopted away from her, just like the character in the book. A couple years ago we brought in a stray cat who we named Melanie (just seemed to fit) but she died from complications caused by FeLeuk.
My friend's cats are C-Flat and Duet (she is a musician).
Growing up I had a dog named Arlo Guthrie (my sister named him) and a golden retriever named Mindy. Our cat was very creatively named Snow (yes she was white).

Growing up, we always had black standard poodles...the big ones. Our first was Charlie, then Ollie (who was born during the Ollie North trials...) Now my parents have Bohicket, named after a marina in SC. He is called Bo for short...fits him perfectly.
A childhood friend had a brother who had a dog named Humphrey...he was a black lab/st. bernard mix - the biggest dog you can imagine. I think the name was perfect.

DH and I have a 2.5 year old golden whose name is Chai (as in Chai latte) because of her light golden milky coloring. She responds to Chilapia (ie. tilapia), chalupa, chaister, chayooga, cha cha cha chia, (and to think, we are all adults who live in this house!). DH and I also have this long running line about What is Chai's favorite fill-in-the-blank? Chai's favorite fish is chilapia, her favorite bread is ciabatta, etc...I know.. I know..pathetic!

Growing up I had a pair of gerbils. Artemus and James. I had two shelties Candi and Karmel and DS and DD had guinea pigs Canibal and Hooper.
We now have a cat named Artemus who went without a name for about a week. DD and I couldn't agree. I thought Harley would be good but she was all set with that. I suggested Artemus and I think it is a name of a cat on a cartoon she knew of...so she agreed. It's a perfect name for him.

My pet house-rabbits' names are Fred and Ginger. Yes, they are both fixed. Fred is all black and is long and sleek. Ginger is the color of ground ginger and a little bit rounder. I adopted them seperately, though at the same time, and when I first saw them together the names seemed obvious.

Fun thread! I just wish I could post pictures of my lovelies too--but I'm too techno-illiterate!
I have a 6 pound calico cat named Kitty (she's Belgian--Kitty is rather an original name in a Dutch speaking country!), but I usually call her Catspit or Minx Pinx Linx.
I have a very fat gray and white cat named Olivia, also known as Fat Girl and Poochy.
My doberman mix, Manda, is nicknamed Beefy.
And the chickens: Beatrice, Cookie, Olivia, Astrid, Control Chicken, Eleanor, Dora, and Ungwen (she turned out to be the same breed as Gwen, a chicken who died last year, so she got to be the Ungwen).

Okay, I'll play "ressurect the thread!"
I have four cats:
A beautiful, geriatric black longhair named Toad (as a kitten, he would leap 4 feet straight up without warning)
A gray shorthair called Misha (DH named her before we met)
Two 8-month-old kittens, brother and sister, called Widget and Punzi (Widget is a tabby whose forhead is emblazoned with a "W" and Punzi is short for Rapunzel, as she is a long-haired princess of a cat.)
I also have my Dalmatian, Metra, and a betta called Aquarius, whose two predecessors were Neptune and Orbit.
In the past, I have also had cats named Badfoot, Goldeyes, Fang, Juniper, Patches, Stripe (talk about uninspired,) and my all-time favorite, Doot. Then there were my horses (Cimmeron Star, Karlina, and Arendia,) the bunnies (Silver, Christmas, and Midnight,) the dogs (Shasta and Tanja,) and cows such as Beef, Hamburger, and Bertha. And chickens, and sheep, and ducks...
Okay, end of long, boring, and self-indulgant post. That was fun! :D

Oh these are all so great! I'm probably going to steal one if I ever have another pet (I think there's one somewhere in my future). My first dog ever when I was growing up was a beagle named Cindi short for Cinderella (I think my Mom named her). I was registering at a website for a Roth IRA and one of the password reclamation questions (in case you ever forget) was 'What was the name of your first dog?' When I told DH to put in Cindi he thought it was decidely weird.
When I was in college I rescued a tiger cat that (my Mom again) named J.Q. short for the dorm I lived in John Quincy Adams. My last dog was Toby and don't ask me where that came from - it was just in my mind when I got the dog. My DH (boyfriend at the time) took to calling him Toby-wan Kenobi a la the character in Star Wars.
If I ever have a female pet again I think I'm going to name her Tabriz (pronounced Ta-breeze) for the rug making village in Iran. I just love the sound of it.
My Step-daughter and her husband who are big baseball fans want to name their future dog Fenway for Fenway park in Boston.

We do work through a local animal rescue. We have been doing this steadily since last April. The organization that we work through is not a shelter.....it is a foster home system. All of the animals that we take in are cared for in people's homes ....that way they are healthy, and well socialized with people and other animals. When we take in a foster kitty we are committed to keeping them until they get adopted...sometimes that can be a long committment. Anyway, PM me if you have anymore questions. It is a lot of work, but it is very rewarding.

Our greyhound is named Bicardi (that was her name when we adopted her and we thought it was cool!) We also have two cats, Ozzy (named after Ozzy Osbourne!) and Kit-Cat. My sister has a lab-mix named Riley, and MIL has a "mixed-breed" dog (mutt :p ) named Samantha or Sammy. When I was younger, my grandparents had a black cat named Misu. They also called him "Machka" (sp?) which was Slovak for "cat"

Bicardi! I love it, Amy. What color is she? (I love the fawn ones but I'm not set on any color in particular.) My Dal doesn't get along well with other dogs, so I may not be able to get a greyhound until we lose her; the local sighthound rescue is keeping and eye out for a mild-mannered dog she might tolerate.
Lorena, that is so cool. I'd love to be involved in that sort of thing in the future. (Of course, I'd want to keep every pet that passed through my house...)

We have a shorthair tuxedo cat named MEU (Mouse Extermination Unit) - he hasn't lived up to his name though. He's not really interested in catching mice or bugs, but he's very good at pointing them out and watching while we catch them. We call him our little pointer cat. Valentine (her birthday is 2-14)
Clementine (cause it rhymes, and we sing her the song)
Bubba-tine (cause we're in TX, land of bubbas)
Conniption-tine (cause she has occasional seizures)
Nentwich (last name of DH's GF at the time)
Sonnenberg (DH last name)
She is generally called Valentine, Valley and Your Dog (as in Your Dog needs a walk, or Your Dog just ate all the cat's food) and doggerham.
Current Cats are:
Mouse, often called Mouser-Bouser (can you see a trend with this rhyming thing?)
P-nut Head (often called Black)
Former cats:
Mr. Kitty (he was very formal)
Pegleg (had a broken leg when found) aka Fat Boy
Aja (yes, for the Steely Dan tune)
Growing up:
Golden retreiver named Sugar Baby
Canary named Dandelion
Parakeet named Herman
Cockatiel named Napoleon
Orange tabby named Frankie

My gorgeous dwarf rabbit is named Gellar - as in Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy The Vampire Slayer). My best friend and I had picked out a few good pet names from Buffy (Gellar, Willow and Seth Green - Seth Green sounds like a good thing to call out to a dog), and then when we decided (spur of the moment) to get a rabbit, as soon as we saw him, Gellar just fit, perfectly. Especially since he's fairly inquisitive and reasonably fearless.
For christmas, Gellar was given his own pet fish (a replacement for last year's fish christmas present), which is called Gellar's Other Pet Fish, or Black Fish for short (it's a blackmore). The other fish we bought is called Gellar's Other Pet Fish's Friend, or Gold Fish for short (guess what colour!?).

Well, since I first replied to this thread, we have a new baby so here is my original:
My babies:
Calloipe is my shaded silver persian. She allows us to live in her house and sleep in her bed with her. She was a present from DH the first Christmas after we were married.
Basie is our barn cat. We got her when we lived in North carolina.
Maddie is our SPCA kitty. We got her 2 years ago.
NOW we have added Tito Puente. He is our only boy and is 10 months old. He is also our biggest cuddler:)

This is a great thread. My mom's parents were breeders of Minature Poodles, so when my mom was in College they had a litter and my mom gave the only male puppy to my dad (they weren't married yet) and he lived to be 19, so I knew him growing up. He was black and was named Peppy. My first words were Peppy growls.
When Peppy died we got a minature schnauzer (sp?) named Strawberry Dacquiri (Dacquiri for short). Her mother's name was Sugar's Whiskey Sour, so we decided to keep the drink name theme.
When Dacquiri died my sister and I pooled our money and bought a Pug puppy from some friends (it was the runt of the litter and couldn't breed, so it was significantly cheaper). However, the dog took to my mom and was her companion until she (the dog) died a couple of years ago. She was a mean dog (in my opinion)and had many health problems. Her name was Chopsticks aka Sticky (she was black).
Now my mom just got another pug and she is fawn colored. She told my daughter she could name her and she named her "Goldfish", because she is gold colored (according to my daughter). My mom didn't really like the name, but since she let Rachel pick it she couldn't very well say no.
I also had a cat growing up named Rascal, he was the best cat ever, so cuddly and soft, with long hair. I also got a cat from a boyfriend in college and I named it Butterscotch (the color of it's fur) however, it was a really soft, furry cat and everyone called it soft kitty, so that name stuck. DH is very allergic to cats, so my parents kept the cat when I got married.
We got a dog right after we got married and it is a Brindle Boxer. He is a really good dog, especially with the kids. His name was Bo Jackson when we got him (the lady who owned the mom and dad sold all the other puppies and so she gave us the last one when he was 4 months old.) so we didn't want to confuse him, but we didn't like the name, so we changed it with the AKC to Tiger Beau, and still call him Beau.

My two current kitties are Frank Sinatra (a flame-point siamese fatso) and Shirley Temple (a skinny little muted calico). Frank is named so because of his eye color and his love of singing; he also answers to Fatty, A-hole and Troublemaker. Shirley came with her first name, but we added Temple to keep with the theme.
When I was growing up I had several pets:
cats: Playful, Oliver (aka Ollie) and Harley (as in harlequin, his face mirrored itself).
dogs: Annastasia (aka Assya, a Borzoi) and Badger.
I had a snake named Nachash Admoni which means the red snake in Hebrew since she's a red corn snake. She lives with my mom now. Also I used to catch green tree snakes and keep them for a day; they were always named Esmarelda .

My dogs are Tango, a Boxer and Bodhi, a Golden. The cats are Sid and Natasha. The Beta fish is Rock.
Our baby is named Albert. Or as we frequently refer to him - Albert The Cat.
My cat's name growing up was Misty. And then came Colby, named so because he was a stray and my mom said we could keep him on the same day that I got my acceptance letter to Colby College, where I went to school.
When I was really little I had a cockatiel named Kiki and my brother had a parakeet named Squirt and they were absolutely in love. Kiki got out one day never to return and Squirt died of broken heart 3 months later. It really was heartbreaking to watch him. We never let them out at the same time, but when Squirt was out he would squeeze through the bars on Kiki's cage and sit next to her until we took him out. It was sweet.

These are my 2 kids. The girl (the one less fluffy) is Caldonia after the Big Band song ("Caldonia what makes your big head so hard?") But we call her Cally. The boy (the fluffy one) is Otis.
Your Otis looks just like my Smudge!
My cats:
Macska (means cat in Hungarian)
Smudge/Koshka Skurgo (Cat in Russian and Esperanto)
If I ever acquire more cats, they'll be given names that mean "Cat" in other languages, e.g. Kissa (Finnish) to keep the theme going. . . :D

Geez, that's just too much thinking! :p
Our cats have been: Orange Cat, Boots, Smoke, Stripe, Dusty, Tigger, Bear (notice a similarity here? we name 'em as we see 'em!!!) and the two that don't follow in that way of thinking, Spooky and Eep.
My puppy's name is Jet. He's a black poodle (5 mos old). The name Jet is sort of obvious - he's black, but it's also because the day we went to see him, we were playing Paul McCartney in the car and Jet was on the CD (one of my favourite McCartney songs). My husband also likes to say is name is Jet because he's fast and propelled by exhaust out the rear LOL.

My lab mix is named Wednesday, she came with the name from the shelter. I think she is so named because the day she was born was a Wednsday. One of the dogs I had prior to Wednesday was Spice. She looked like someone had dumped spices like ginger, pepper, a little salt and lots of other spices all together. Her companion was Eboni (because yes she was jet black) We had standard names for the dogs we had while growing up, princess, dutchess, pierre (french poodle). We did have one dog we named Cookie. The cat that adopted us was named Cat.

Our cats are named Herschel (after Herschel Walker of the Minnesota Vikings), Charcoal (he's all black) and Snowbelle (after the cat in the movie Stuart Little - he's all white). DH named Herschel 13+ years ago; the kids named the black and white cats 18 months ago when we got them.
The ironic thing is, I've met several people who have pets with the same names as my children!!! eeek. DD's 1st grade teacher this year has a dog with the same name as DS. DD includes the DOG in her prayers each night... I though she was "God blessing" her brother, but it turns out not to be the case!

All of your animals (the pics that I have seen are beautiful) - but where are the bird owners?? Must be a few. I have 2 golden retrievers, Buddy and Chloe - and the most interesting amazing animal of all a Congo African Grey parrot - Jacko - too much/too funny/very talkative - the most intelligent animal I have ever to come across. That being said, I love all animals to pieces and you all obviously do as well - great pictures and thanks for sharing - I wish I knew how to post a picture??????????

My cats names are Sneekers, Star and Tux. Sneekers and Tux are both between 16 and 17 years old and Star is about a year younger. We also have four fish tanks and one day we'll add another dog to the mix.
If this works, here are some pictures of Tux and Sneekers. Star is my "feral" cat and I don't have very many pictures of her (at least not on digital) but hopefully, I'll remedy that soon.

My parents trained dogs and my dad was in K9 law enforcement among other things so I've been around lots of animals.
They had a spider monkey named Betsey. College students boarded him at my dad's kennel/training school and left him there...so my parents adopted him. He died of an infection after an injury. He was a handful. He got my mom's lipstick in the car and got it everywhere. Mom said it was funny to see the looks of the other drivers at the stoplight to see someone wiping lipstick off a monkey.
Dad had bloodhounds, one named Toby. He wasn't very nice to children, so we didn't get near him. We had an Irish Setter named Ember, an English Sheepdog named Rascal, two german shepherds, Tai Pan, then Bocephus, a golden retriever named Luke. A white persian named Crystal.
I now have two cats. Macavity and Grisouille--we call her Gris. She looks like Yorkshirepud's Socks with a spot on her nose.
As a kid I had gerbils...lots of gerbils. Bo, the german shepherd was on meds for cancer and was very hungry. He was also 150lbs. He banged open my door...need I say more?? :(

My parents had a cockatiel named Teal. He was so sweet. He loved to sit with you and eat popcorn. My mom has a Congo African Gray named Ali. She's almost smarter than we are. She watches my mom in the kitchen from her perch in the ajoining office--and knows what my mom is cooking. She's ask for the foods she wants by name.
I had an African Gray named Maggie (she was given to me because her owner became severely allergic), but she got agressive as she became old enough to breed and constantly screamed--even though I was home all day and she was out with me. She would also bite on me and do this mating dance. She would wake us up in the middle of the night screaming. I finally took her back to the breeder to live--she was much happier. She was a very sweet, cuddly parrot. Her favorite song was Rod Stewart's Maggie May. :D

I placed the URL inside of the IMG selection box.

Hi Luika :)
Make sure that at the bottom of your screen (the "Forum Rules" right below the "submit reply" and "preview reply"), that your [IMG] code is ON. That might be what's wrong.
Good luck!

P.S.
Here's the whole process:
You right click on the picture you wish to show.
Go to PROPERTIES.
Once in properties, right click and highlight the URL (web address) of the PICTURE.
Copy that.
In the CL BB, click the IMG button, and PASTE the picture's URL into the box.
Voila :)
and... btw... your dog is adorable!

Kayla,
Thanks so much for the info. Unfortunately, I'm still not getting anywhere.
I checked and the IMG was "ON".
I'm on a Macintosh, so I'm not really sure what the "right clicks" are in the IBM world, but I did COPY the URL address from the picture file I have on the Olympus website, then PASTEd it into the IMG box.
Oh well. Eventually I'll get it :p

Luika,
Instead of copying the URL address at the top of the Web page, right click with your mouse on the actual picture of Rocky. Scroll down to the bottom of the box where it says "Properties" and click on that. Another box should come up, with the name of the JPG file, along with some other information such as dimension, size, etc. Copy the URL address (ending with .jpg) and insert that into the IMG box on the page.
Very confusing, I know! :)

Moochie is aptly named. He was a stray kitty, about the age of a teenager, when he started to run around the apt. complex and meow at my then DBF's (now DH's) door. So, sucker that DH is for any animal, he started feeding him. This lasted a few months, and Mister (as DH called him then, very original) always stayed outside. One day, DH came home and his neighbor asked him, Hey, is that your cat? So DH told her that no, he just felt bad for the little guy. Why? The neighbor replied that she and two other neighbors were also feeding this "scrawny" cat!! We thought, what a mooch!! And sly, too. ;)
Soon after that, someone kicked Mister/Moochie in the jaw while he was outside--he came running up to DH's door, hurt. DH called me and I drove them both to the emergency vet. We figured he knew he was best taken care of with my softie of a guy. Hundreds of $$ later (and we were in college at the time), he healed and became Moochie, and he thinks DH is the chief cat in our family! (And, he no longer goes outside!)
Here they are: http://www.clark-fisher.com/P2200061.jpg

LOL...I would have loved to have seen that! DH and I went to Kenya a couple of years ago and the resort we stayed at warned the guests about the monkeys - to keep your tent firmly zipped up or they were likely to get into your stuff etc. Apparently there was a classic incident of monkeys getting into somebody's toothpaste (shades of your Mom's lipstick adventure). They even had a guy who's job it was to patrol the dining area (which was outdoors) with a slingshot to scare them off so they wouldn't steal food. Anyway, one day we went to the pool and DH, who wears glasses - I should say is dependent on his glasses, decided to take a nap. He took his glasses off and put them on the table between our chairs. I decided I was going to take a nap too and put his glasses in my tote bag so the monkeys wouldn't get them. He wakes me up in a panic about half an hour later thinking the monkeys had stolen his glasses!! :D It cracks me up every time I think of the look of utter terror on his face. He was all set to tear off into the bush looking (myopically) for the monkey wearing wire rimmed spectacles!

crlykat, what a great story about Moochie. My DH is such a huge sucker for our Sam-cat, the two of them frequently can be found sacked out on the sofa in just the same pose as that photo of your DH and Moochie. :D
