I want to make a baked bean receipe that calls for navy beans but I cannot find them. Can anyone suggest an alternative please. I see some receipes call for Great Northern Beans but I cannot find them either.
Thanks

Bern - you mean you can't find the 'dry' ones in the bag - the little white ones - I can always find them - but sometimes the canned ones are not always available - I just made a baked bean recipe yesterday from an earlier post and actually made one other from there too - great recipes - good luck finding them. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

OK, I just made a soup Sunday with navy beans and I remembered that there was a different name on the pkg, but it said navy beans in small letters underneath. I just went and looked through the trash!!!! (Which was smelly b/c we had Dracula's Revenge last night and the garlic skins are in there!!!) but I couldn't find the pkg. Are you looking for dried beans? Navy beans are a small white bean. I think great northern would taste similar only they would be bigger...hope that helps a little! Jen

The receipe calls for dry, but I don't really care, I can always adjust. i promised my husband baked beans this week so any suggestions will be welcome. What about lima beans?

BernK,
I'm surprised you can't find navy beans or Great Northern beans; they're pretty commonplace, but either kind should work, and you could definitely adapt the recipe to use canned beans, instead -- just don't cook them as long, or they'll get mushy. I'm with Lanie on the lima beans -- really, don't use them -- definitely not on the top of the substitution list http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

My sister-in-law makes homemade baked beans all the time, she uses either the navy (northern) beans dry or kidney beans dry, both are always a huge success!! good luck

Thanks for all your help. I finally found great northern beans at probably the sixth store I went into.
