Oh my gosh...I just have to share this because it made me say OH MY GOSH out loud...I was watching "who wants to be a millionaire (I know, I know) and the question was, "What's the main inggredient in a New York Cheesecake? Mozzarella, cottage cheese, cream cheese, or blue cheese. The guy had to ask the audience!!! Even my boyfriend and my dad would know that! Wow. That was my entertainment for the night.

That's funny... I have one for you, too. A friend of mine was dating a girl for a while and, being a culinary sort, decided to make her a cake for Valentine's Day. She enjoyed it and asked what the frosting was on the cake. My friend said it was whipped cream. So she asked for the recipe and, trying to hold back his frustration, replied, "it's WHIPPED cream." She replied that she'd never heard of it but still wanted the recipe. Needless to say he broke up with her shortly thereafter!

Come on, AndreaU, you're kidding on this one, right? I mean, I can understand someone not knowing how to make a cheesecake or pasta puttanesca, or not having encountered some ethnic or regional specialty ingredient -- but WHIPPED CREAM????? Come on, every infant knows what whipped cream is, even if the only kind he or she has ever known is the fake stuff in cans!
So either you're fibbing or the hackers have invaded the board again, right? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif When I read this one, I let out a whoop of laughter that echoed up and down the halls of the English Department. I guess that takes care of my raise next year, huh? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

I kid you not... this guy was my husband's college roommate. Either one will verify this sad but true tale. Needless to say, this girl was not the sharpest knife in the drawer (where is that kitchen sayings thread....)!

Here's one for the "I can't believe she just said that" category. When I was younger-a teenager-a friend and I were eating lunch at a deli. We were having big huge pickles with our sandwiches and she said "You know, everytime I eat a pickle I think of cucumbers for some reason....isn't that weird??" I am still laughing about that little gem 20 years later!! (Wow...20 years suddenly I feel really old....hmmmm!!)
wow... AndreaU the whipped cream story is hysterical ! I am still snickering...

I've got one along the same lines but not nearly as funny as as the whipped cream. For my boyfriend's birthday I told him I would make him a cake from scratch and asked him what flavors he liked. He said his mom always makes him Devil's Food Cake from scratch. I asked him if she followed a recipe and he said she just opens the box!

Andrea,
The whipped cream story is great! I have a similar story although it is not food related.
Someone I know told me about a friend of hers who went out with a woman who was a "few tacos short of a combo plate" or a "sandwich shy of a picnic" and took her to see the movie Titanic. She told him how sad the movie made her because she didn't know that they were going to die!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

I can relate to your story, WendyW. Years ago, the miniseries "Masada" was on TV, and all my coworkers were watching it. The evening the last episode was on, my friend's husband wanted to go out, but my (Jewish) friend wanted to watch it instead. Her husband expressed surprise that she wanted to watch something so depressing, since everyone dies. She asked him how he knew, since the end hadn't been broadcast yet!
Back to the food theme, in college, I baked my boyfriend a cake for his birthday. He said it was the best cake he'd ever had, what mix did I use? I told him I didn't use a mix, it was a "scratch" cake. He incredulously asked me how anyone could make a cake without a mix. Same boyfriend was also blown away when I served him Hershey's cocoa (the powder stuff you mix with sugar and cook) -- never had had anything but the stuff in packets.
