I'm hoping someone can help me.

I have a favorite celery green linen-blend jacket that I put away for the winter last year. Well, I looked at it just now and there is a red wine stain on one side, by the pocket. I know just when it happened, too, and there's no hope that it is fresh.:o

I promise I've kicked myself about thirty times. Now does anyone know how to get this stain out? I don't want to touch it until I check for ideas. The easy thing would be to unpick the patch pocket, but unfortunately the idiot who caused this stain (a drunken business associate at a disastrous business supper that's a funny story in itself) achieved maximum coverage.

Hope someone can help me.

Hey, if it works, I'll post the business supper story.

Thanks!

I vote for Oxy Clean. It works on everything, as long as it hasn't been laundered first. But I just put in new couches in my living room, and when we moved the old couch out, there was a HUGE red stain under where the couch used to be. I used Oxy Clean and it was out in a matter of seconds. GREAT stuff.

Oxy clean? Do they sell it at Bed Bath & Beyond? Or grocery stores? I'll go look for it. This jacket hasn't been touched (yet).

Thanks, Grace!

I would take it to the cleaners, explain what the stain is, and hope for the best. Most linen I have had has to be dry cleaned anyways. Also, if it is lined, there is no way I would be washing it.

Diana,

I've seen Oxi Clean at Costco. I'm sure there are other places that carry it, though. Here's a link to the wbsite: http://www.greatcleaners.com/web/default.asp

Let us know how the jacket turns out. I've been wanting to try this stuff...

I vote for dry cleaner...I've tried oxy on several stains with no luck....but maybe i'm not using it correctly.

Call me overly cautious, but I wouldn't be willing to risk ruining a jacket I love by trying a do-it-yourself job. I'd take it to a cleaner I really trust and give them as much detail as possible.

Diana,
Did you get the wine stain out of this jacket? I wonder because I had some dinner guests a couple of weeks ago, and yesterday I decided it was time to take the table cloth off the table & wash it. I haven't done it sooner because it really didn't seem to be dirty. When I picked up the candlesticks, lo and behold, there was a red wine stain under one. It's just a small one and had I been more observant I would have seen it sooner. It was sort of peeking out from under the candlestick - I don't think anyone purposely tried to hide it. So I'm hoping you had some luck and can tell me which avenue you took with your jacket. Thanks.

No luck with my jacket; I concluded it was a lost cause and tossed it.

HOWEVER, my mother got an old red wine stain out of a cream wool sweater by the following:

Used a pre-treating spot product and then hand-washed using laundry detergent and cold water. She then allowed it to dry, checked the result, and repeated the process several times. It got the stain out (and the stain was several months old - the sweater was mine). If your tablecloth is white and a natural fiber like cotton, I'd suggest that and then (with caution) soaking it in a very light bleach solution (say, 1/2 C bleach to an entire laundry tub full of water) and a thorough wash cycle.

That should help. (sorry I didn't reply sooner)

Episode 116: A VERY QUEER EYE HOLIDAY

Either This Makes A Bomb Or Takes Out Stains, I Can't Remember
If you're having a holiday party, inevitably some jack-in-the-box is going spill red wine either on your clothes or on your carpet. Don't be alarmed. All you do is take two parts of hydrogen peroxide and one part Dawn dishwashing liquid, swish it around with a sponge, squeeze out the excess and simply rub the solution on the stain. When it dries, it'll be gone.

hope this works on your tablecloth!
