I just received a cookbook from a friend called "The Black Dog Summer on the Vineyard Cookbook". I get the impression that The Black Dog Restaurant is a very popular restaurant on Martha's Vineyard. Since I'm from the Pacific Northwest, and have never been to Martha's Vineyard, I'm wondering if anybody has ever dined at this restaurant, or cooked any recipes from this cookbook.

Yes, the Black Dog is a very popular restaurant on Martha's Vineyard. I've eaten there once--it's good, but overrated. You may have seen the t-shirts and hats that people wear from there (I swear this is why the place is popular!) they just have a silouhette of a black dog on it. I've seen them EVERYWHERE around the country.

Kristilyn1,
I've never been to Martha's Vineyard, but the t-shirt thing sounds alot like the Salty Dog Cafe in Hilton Head...everyone has them, (there's a green one in my closet http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif )and the food isn't much to speak of at all. It's amazing what a little propaganda can do for a place!

Thanks for sharing your impressions of the Black Dog Restaurant.
I’m a little disappointed to hear the food is overrated. The cookbook is impressive, with beautiful pictures, and delicious sounding recipes, like: Crunchy Pecan Chicken with Lemon-Ginger Sauce, Chilled Spicy Sesame Noodles, and Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Lime and Chiptole. Yummy!
But I’ll still try one or two of the recipes, but now I’ll just be sure to set my expectations a little lower!
I just got back from Martha's Vineyard. The food at the Black Dog, is good, but not great. It is a tad touristy and expensive.
The Black Dog makes great desserts, especially pies. If you like apple crisp, try the one in the cookbook. I made it last week. It's good, but it's very rich.
I also tried the recipe for steamers, which turned out great. I found steamers at a specialty seafood store. This weekend I'm going to try the Carmelized Scallops.
