View Full Version : What's happened to tuna?

The recent thread on tuna casseroles and my buying tuna for my too-skinny cat had me wondering what has happened to canned tuna in recent years. Most of the cans I open are bits and flakes of mush, not the "chunk" type that I remember. I opened a can for my cat today that was actually chucky, but it's been a long time since I've seen another one like it.

Beth, I'm not sure what happened to tuna but I just wanted you to be careful when you are feeding it to your sweet cat! I will share my cans of tuna with one of my piggy cats too, but the vet told me not to do it too much as they have a hard time digesting it and it can block up their digestive system/urinary tract. Not sure if that would really happen, but I wouldn't want you or your cat to have to go through that!

Thanks for your concern. I give her a T or 2 a day most days, but not every day, mixed in with kitten chow. She is about 8-9 years old and was starting to get even thinner than her part-Siamese normal and her coat was drying out. We had to put our part Maine Coone on a diet at 19lbs and needed to be sure the 6lb cat didn't waste away. She's now happier, playful, affectionate, and her coat is so soft. She's eating the kitten chow plain too, so she doesn't get the tuna all the time. I should have also said that I will keep this in mind if she shows any signs of distress and will verify with her vet. It seems that she is so small she needed more concentrated nutrition, which is mainly the kitten chow.

I agree with you about the state of canned tuna these days. Mine is generally very mushy and watery as well. I have a killer tuna casserole recipe (by no means light, however) and I'm frequently grossed out by the state of my tuna. I've even thrown a can or two away http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif because it looks and smells so unappealing.

Get the "chunk white" albacore tuna instead of the "chunk light" tuna. HUGE difference!! The tuna tastes much better, and it really is in chunks, not "mush". I get 8 cans at Costco for $6.00, so it's not more expensive, either.

I absolutely agree!!! I was on the verge of giving up on ever eating canned tuna again. I do buy the chunk white albacore, but I notice bones, and what looks like scales in it and sometimes even some black stuff!!! But I started buying Bumble Bee and it has made a world of difference. It is big clean white chunks of tuna and no bones, scales or black substances. I am enjoying tuna again.
