View Full Version : disposing of a knife

When we moved into our apartment 5 years ago, my DF's parents gave us a bunch of kitchen stuff. Now we're moving out, and I have this gargantuan knife they gave us, that I want to get rid of. It appears to be a carving knife... the blade is about 10" long, about 1" wide at the base and tapered to the tip. We have never used it and never will.

How does one dispose of such a knife? None of my friends are interested (we recently gave away a microwave, a blender, and a set of dishes, but nobody wanted the knife!). Is it bad to throw it in the trash? Do you think the Salvation Army would accept it? I have visions of the police knocking on my door, holding the knife which someone found in my trash, and informing me that I'm a suspect in some crime! And, more realistically, I don't want any of our garbage pick-up guys to get hurt by it... I've seen the way they swing the garbage bags into the truck.

This is an excellent question. I am wondering if you couldn't put it in a vice and break it in half or something. Other than that I might call my local police station and ask them. A little corny but I'd rather be safe!

Could you put the blade inside a paper towel roll and tape it up really good before putting it in the trash? That would probably keep someone from getting hurt. I bet Goodwill or a place like that might take it as well. They take a lot of kitchen stuff.

Actually, why don't you just call your sanitation service? They usually have guidelines on how to dispose of all sorts of stuff.

Gertdog, I had the same dilemma when I finally got GOOD knives and wanted to dispose of my old set. I called the police station and asked if they had a preference about how to dispose of it. They probably laughed at me after they hung up, but it was a concern to me so I figured I'd ask :o . They told me to wrap it well in layers of newspaper, tape it up with masking tape, and put it in the trash. As long as it's wrapped up well no one will be hurt.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who was worried about it!

Thank you for the responses and ideas! I think I will wrap it carefully, maybe in an old towel that was destined for the Salvation Army, and put it out in the trash.
