[COLOR=orange] well, i am making the Brownie Cheesecake Torte and it says to preheat the oven to 425&176. What does this mean?? then it says later in the instructions to reduce heat to 250 &176. Please help.
thanks much!

I'm going to take a wild guess that the "&176" is actually a degree symbol. Sounds like you start at 425 degrees and then cut the temperature to 250 degrees.

Melman is correct, Lindsay....
Whoever posted the recipe was attempting to make the "Degree sign" using the code for degree which is the alt key and then 176. It doesn't seem to work on this Board.

Actually, the code for the degree sign is alt + 0186. As in: 425º

Thanks Grace,
When I use the degree sign on my emails it is Alt +0176. I cetainly will try Alt +0186 for this board. That will certainly make things easier so a BIG thank you :)

Ok, now I HAVE to try it!
GRAAAAACE. I pushed the alt button, held it down then typed 0186. Nothing typed. What did I do wrong?

I think you forgot the "+" ---you actually have to type in the plus sign too. :)

Maybe your problem is which numbers you are using? You need to use the number pad to the right of your letters - NOT the numbers that are just above your letters. Hope this clears things up! :)
BTW and FYI - I've never had to use the "+" key when using these symbols. :)

OK....
It still doesnt work.
1)I pushed down the alt key and ketp it down the whole time
2) Since it calls for the + key, I pushed the shift key then the plus key, then let up on both
3) Then I typed the numbers. Then I let up on the alt key. I dont know how else to do it
Alysha, just saw your post...I dont have numbers to the side...mine is a laptop. Maybe I cant do it???

Kim - you don't need to type the plus sign - just the alt key and then the numbers. You probably can't do it because of your "character map" (it's probably different). Go to your character map (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Character Map), and then look through it for the degree sign. It will tell you what numbers you have to push (while holding the alt key) to get the degree sign. And pretty much any other sign you might want too! :D

Kim, I'm on a laptop too, and can't seem to get it to work. I found a degree sign in the character map under the Times New Roman font. It's alt + 0176, but I can't get it to work either.

O.K. I've got to try too:
Edit-didn't work.
Mine says U+00b0 and if I use alt I get a pop up similar to the http:// one.

# I'll have to ask DH when he gets home. I found the character map, but when I select and copy then try to past, it still doesnt come out right. Maybe by tomorrow I can do this.

Oh no... I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I was just happy to see something work for once. To have worked with computers my entire working career, some of the easiest things that people post in here totally defeat me!!! I finally gave up on finding my own avatar and getting it to appear here. I use one of the canned ones because I couldn't get one I selected to work!!!
I don't know if this is a universal, but on my laptop there is a button marked FN which must be pressed in conjunction with the ALT while you type in your 0186 or 0176 (either works on my unit). On the nonlaptop unit I am currently using, you must use the right-hand numeric pad and the NUM LOCK must be enabled.
