View Full Version : Do you like cheese?

Plain and simple: how much do you like cheese? I'm asking because I find that I'm in a very small minority of people who don't like cheese! :D There must be more people like me out there!

I am a cheese fanatic! Never seem to put the amount listed in a recipe, must always put more! Spend quite a bit of time at the cheese counter looking for new ones. I always have at least 5 different ones in the fridge at any given time.

Ditto to sneezles. Cheese and chocolate are the two things I turn to when life gets me down (oh.... and peanut butter :)).

Mary Kate,
About two years ago, I would have been in the same boat as you. I didn't like cheese unless it was melted, like on pizza, or in mac & cheese. As a kid, I wouldn't even eat cheese on pizza - wouldn't touch anything with any kind or form of cheese.
Cheese was definitely an acquired taste for me. I've only recently gotten to the point that I can eat cheese with crackers -- before, that was much too plain for me (it had to be hidden in or mixed with something). I voted that I eat cheese, but I'm not a fanatic. There are still plenty of cheeses that I don't like, and I really have to be in the right mood for cheese. I still skip the cheese on sandwiches and salads. And you'll NEVER see me eating a plain 'ol piece of cheese right out of the fridge. :o

Hello, My name is Emilie and I'm a cheeseaholic....
I love so much cheese. I like all those fancy, oddball cheeses that make toes curl with the smell. I love the stuff so much that I'm buying some for myself as a birthday present. Right now I'm into all kinds of goat cheese. Crottin and Bouche (sp?) are my favorites mmmmmmm..... drizzled with honey.

I had to vote in this poll because like sneezles, kahlico, and others, I LOVE LOVE LOVE cheese. My favorite is goat cheese (Bucheron is my ABSOLUTE favorite), but I also like good sharp cheddar, brie, aged gouda, and I don't want to forget blue cheese (especially Stilton), and oh so many more...with wine, in food, for dessert, for a snack, cottage cheese, cream cheese, you name it, I love it! :D
PS mightyh, you are right, chocolate and peanut butter ARE awfully good too... ;)

Another cheese lover here. For my bridal shower, we played a game in which my maid of honor had asked my husband a series of questions before hand. I then had to answer the same questions at the shower, sort of like the newlywed game. One of the questions was "What is Amy's favorite food?" I answered spinach & when she revealed his answer, it was cheese. Everyone teased me about the truth of my eating habits coming out.

Hello, Emilie!
I too am a cheeseaholic. I knew I had reached rock bottom when I was attempting to lose weight and dreamed of baked brie and was hiding my 2% cheese in the vegetable drawer so my DH wouldn't find it and eat it. It was a 16 oz package for crying out loud!

I'm a fanatic about cheese and have been since I was a child. Dh, on the other hand, seldom eats it. He won't touch things like macaroni and cheese, however, he will eat a little bit on top of pizza, but if it's too much, he will peel it off!
Too much cheese???? Never!!!
I am a complete cheese fanatic!! I can easily take a hunk out of the fridge and eat it just like that. Love cheddar, blue, you name it, I'll eat it!

I voted fanatic, but I would classify myself as a picky fanatic! :)
I love many cheeses and could not live without them, but there are also plenty of cheeses that I don't like. I tend to use cheese in cooking (it's hard for me to cook without it!), rather than eating it as a separate entity. A big cheese and cracker smorgasboard would not temp me much. Unless it was full of Boursin! :)
I have to be careful how much I eat because I can't tolerate too much dairy. Plus, if I ate as much cheese as I wanted I would be the size of a house. That said... I love the stuff. Nothing better than a glass of wine and some cheese. I was in heaven on a recent trip to Montreal. The cheese there is so much better than what I typically get in the States. And in one restaurant we actually had a cheese course that I can't stop talking about!

Okay ... it looks as though I'm just a freak. There's only one other person out there who voted that they don't like cheese? Speak up! Please! I want to hear from you! :) :) :)
For me, it depends on how much, what kind, what it's served with (or in), and what form it's in. I DESPISE that Kraft (or any brand) cheese that comes in slices for sandwiches. Thickness is another factor. I could NEVER bite into anything containing a thick or even medium-thick layer of cheese. It would be great to be able to have a paper-thin cheese layer on pizzas and quesadillas.
When I was much younger, my mother made grilled cheese sandwiches and quesadillas with an extremely thick, oozing layer of cheese in between that always made me want to gag! It ruined my desire for much cheese ever since.
I'm in the minority that does not care for the expensive authentic parmesan-reggiano. It tastes like the canned to me. I prefer minute amounts of plain Romano or Parmesan on pasta. One way that I do love cheese is with beans. Unfortunately, I can't tolerate beans anymore. However, beans have always seemed incomplete without cheese.
One cheese that I actually liked was called Anejo (or cotija?). It's served at a lot of Tex-Mex and Mexican restaurants. I also like myzithra (sp?), a Greek cheese that is extremely hard to find here.
Finally, I don't like any cheese that tastes like milk, which I suppose is my problem with the slices. I haven't tasted very many different kinds, and I don't really care to. I don't like any cheese enough to spend much money, and I know I could never consume even one whole serving before the expiration date.
I use cheese a lot like a spice or seasoning to complement other flavors (almost as I would use salt or pepper). It just makes me too nauseated to eat any significant amounts.

I'm one of the minority - I dislike cheese and my hips thank me! But here's why.
When I was a small child, around 6 yrs old, my parents packed me off to spend the summer with another family in France. One evening, we went to a very large house for dinner. Ahead of the meal, I was sent down to the kitchen (to keep me out of the way). The chef kept speaking to me in french, and not wanting to be rude, I just kept saying "Oui" (that's "yes).
So after yet another one-way conversation with the chef, and saying "Oui" - he brings out a large platter of....you guessed it....french cheeses. And again, not wanting to be an inpolite child or guest, I systematically ate a piece out of each cheese on the platter. It was painful. And as soon as his back was turned, I ran out to the herb garden and was violently ill.
That explains my inability to eat cheese as a grown woman. It's purely a mental block, but really, I've lived this long without cheese, I don't miss it. But get this - I LOVE CHEESECAKE!!!!!

When I was in high school I would have to sit alone at lunch, on days that my mom packed my favourite sandwich--fresh panini and big hunks of blue cheese. My locker did get a bit ripe by lunch time-LOL! -but I didn't care! :p My friends would actually sit at the other end of the long school lunch tables until I was finished "that stinky sandwich". I love all types--mild, strong, pungent, moldy, creamy, hard--you name it. We have a wonderful cheese specialty shop--I'm like a kid in a candy store!

So guess how I voted?
FANATIC
My dad owned a couple of cheese factories when I was growing up -- he made provolone (we pronounced the "e" at the end) and mozzarella. When I was really young, the provolone was smoked in an old-fashioned wood smokehouse. Later, they started using liquid smoke in the brining process. At one time, I even had a brand of mozzarella named after me: Jackie Ann. THAT was good for lots of laughs at school:o
But even MORE embarassing is the fact that we NEVER cooked with our own mozzarella! My mom used to make pizza from a Jeno's packaged "kit" and she used the little packet of shredded cheese that came in the box. What can I say? It was the 60s....
Today, I like most kinds of cheese, but generally prefer harder cheeses over softer ones.
Behold.....the power of cheese

Another cheese fanatic here! I could live without chocolate if necessary, but never ask me to give up my cheese :D .
But Mary Kate, you aren't alone. I used to belong to a supper club and one of our members didn't like cheese... at all. It was sometimes hard to come up with an entire dinner menu (or most of one) that didn't include cheese, but I had to remind myself that there are things I'm not that fond of either - not everyone eats everything.

I could live without it. I like it melted in dishes or on a grilled cheese, but I never eat it straight. To me, it's just boring.
Now blue (bleu!) cheese I do like. That is NOT boring. I also like saganyaki made with Kessiri cheese, but since there's not one Greek restaurant here in Austin that serves it, I never get it :(.
.....and I like parmesano reggiano.

Well, let me give you a couple of hints.
1. Every time I see the title of this thread, I get hungry.
2. I rarely see the word "Swiss" without thinking of Swiss cheese.
3. I love those "behold the power of cheese" ads.
4. At any given time there are at least 3 kinds of cheese (sometimes more like 6) in the fridge, and they rarely get spoiled and go to waste.
5. I consider cheese one of the basic four food groups when I'm in Europe (along with chocolate, bread, and wine). ;)
6. I try to save an appetite for when I go to a wine and cheese so I can make a meal out of it. :D

The county I grew up in is the dairy producing capital of Texas, and every year when I was a kid the milk producers of the area hosted a Cheese Festival. OMG!!! Tables and tables of every kind of cheese imaginable, and many that kids of my age and sheltered lives could never imagine. They also had free-flowing milk and chocolate milk, but I couldn't be bothered. It was such a huge deal in town that they carted all the school kids to it by bus every year. Gosh, I miss that... :D
I love those cheese ads, too, Natasha. :p

Natasha-
Your thoughts on europe reminded me of when I was in portugal (about 13) visiting my grandparents for a summer. I came back about 30 lbs heavier than when I left, but my food day consisted of:
breakfast:
warm rolls with slabs of cheese and butter with coffee (fresh milk and bread/rolls bought and DELIVERED that morning)
lunch:
soup of some kind
roasted meat of some kind with potatoes or rice
fish
fresh bread and cheese with port for dessert
late afternoon:
coffee or tea with pastries
dinner:
tomato and onion salad with balsamic vinegar and pressed olive oil so strong it was green :D
some kind of stew
YUMMM
the cheese was so incredible.

I grew up in Stephenville, which is the county seat of Erath County. We (well, "they" since I don't live there anymore) have a giant plastic cow named (are you ready?) Moola up on a pole on the courthouse lawn (no, I'm not making this up). It was a constant source of amusement and some embarassment, too. Yup, good ol' Tarleton. I didn't realize it til after I moved away what a huge rodeo mecca Tarleton and Stephenville are. I just thought we were a wide spot in the road with a huge plastic cow on a stick. Turns out that it's a big deal on the rodeo circuit and that several big name riders live there. Wonder if they like cheese...?

On Sunday night I vowed "NO CHEESE until the weekend. None."
Mondays lunch was leftover Quesadilla's. I did not make it very far, now did I? (I couldn't let them go to waste!)
I've gained some weight since moving and I know my pitfalls. (too bad I live in the pitfalls most of the time!) I'm with wendy w- cheese and portion control and then of course there is my love for wine!
Here in Dubuque we have an annual summer weekend that is devoted to Dragon Boat racing. (Sometimes it is international) Well, since it is very first year here, I have signed up to paddle on my company team. Thus I feel like I should loose the additional cheese (I mean weight) that I have grown into.
This love affair is a tough one to break!

I voted "Yes, but you wouldn't label me a fanatic". I wouldn't say I'm really adventurous in the cheese department either. There are several kinds I like and I'm really not tempted to try different varieties. I have a (wholly unscientific) theory that there are "salty" people and "sweet" people. I mean that in the way that, if you're going to grab a snack some people will grab chips/crackers/cheese and others will immediately grab cookies/ice cream/cake/sweets. I definitely fall into the latter category (to the detriment of my thighs and butt!) and am married to a "salty" person. I think it's hereditary. Is there anybody else in your immediate family who's a non-cheese eater? My DH thinks that mayonnaise was put on this Earth by Satan himself and the WEIRD thing is his two (now grown) kids are the same way - and he was divorced from their mother and didn't live in the same house as the kids when they were growing up so it's not like he influenced them on that. My personal fanaticism is bread in all its wonderful, heavenly varieties.

I'm not all that fond of eating it "straight" but in pizza and lasagne and shredded on top of tostados I love it. parmesan & sharp cheddar especially. I draw the line at foul smelling cheese like any form of bleu or limberger. anything that smells like old gym socks.
