OK, I noticed that a lot of people LOVE this grocery store. I am not enamored of mine, and was thinking... would it be totally nuts of me to try to get to one of the Wegmans in PA? I live in Philadelphia (Manayunk, so at least I'm near 76)

What do other Pennsylvanians think? Worth the trip?

Thanks!
Jen

It's a lovely store. I especially enjoy the vegetarian and organic goods and the bakery. If it's not too far away from you or you feel like a little drive one day, I'd check it out. :) Have fun, if you do!!

I have a friend who works for Wegman's corporate, and she PROMISES me that a Wegman's is coming to Cherry Hill, NJ, in early 2003. My fingers, toes, and anything else that crosses are crossed!!

You probably want to check it out before then, Jen, but once it opens it'll be closer to Manayunk than some of the other stores (depending on Schuylkill traffic, that is :D ).

The Wegman's website says a supermarket will be opening in Downingtown by Spring 2003. I'm in the Philadelphia area too, and I was a big fan of Genuardi's until Safeway took over and it hasn't been the same. I usually have to go to a couple stores to get everything I want.

Where on the website did you find information about new stores? I looked under the "store locator" and didn't find anything. Just hoping they've got more Jersey stores planned... :D

There wasn't anything about new stores ... I clicked on "Downingtown" in the store locator, and it said there was a Wegman's pharmacy there now, but the grocery store wouldn't open until next year.

Oh well. Thanks anyway! That's weird that they have a pharmacy there before a store.

That's pretty ironic you posted a Wegman's question this afternoon. I looked about 30 minutes ago to see if they had any plans to start moving south anytime in the future. When I was at the Bethlehem store in early June, I asked if they had plans to move southward. Someone told me they had bought land in Maryland (or Virginia??) but it looked like they'd start heading out of the tri-state (NY/PA/NJ) area at SOME point!!

I've been in the Bethlehem store a couple of times. The first time was fun!!! The store had just opened. There was a huge crowd, the shelves were incredibly stocked, and it was almost a party atmosphere. They were giving away samples of food in almost every direction you looked. LARGE samples!! (Not teeny-tiny bites of these items). My cousin and I had a ball!!

The second time was MUCH more laid back!! The party-atmostphere was gone, most of the samples were gone (I think we were there at a strange time...like EARLY in the morning)...but the shelves were still very well stocked. The produce was beautiful. The cheese market was wonderful. The meat aisle at this place is phenomenal!! I'm not particularly wild about red-meat, but I would have LOVED to have purchased several things (trying to drive them back home 650 miles south was an obstacle.)

I would LOVE to have Wegman's near me!! If it's not too far a drive, you should definitely make a trip at least once to check it out.

Stephanie,

There is a Wegmans in Princeton, NJ on route 1 so it's only about a 20 - 30 minute drive (depending on traffic) down 1 for you from New Brunswick. It's in a shopping center with a Target, Home Depot, WalMart, Kohls, Borders, Michael's Crafts . . . the list goes on and on. So if you go, you could make an afternoon of it. It's on the South bound side of Route 1 past the Princton MarketFair.

Stephanie,

Just saw your post on the "How Far Are You from Your Favorite Grocery Store" thread. Sounds like you already found the Princeton Wegmans!

The one on 512? That is 1 1/2 miles from my OLD house:mad: We could walk to the Weis Market, 1/2 mile away but would need a car to get to Wegmans. Does anyone know when it opened? They have one in Allentown, also!!!! I hope they are working their way down to my neighborhood soon! I will go to their site and see.....Thanks! Wait, I just went to their site and Easton is getting one, too?! That is not fair!!

Yup, and it has WINE!!! Yippee!!! Because of state laws, the stores in NY and PA don't have anything except beer.

But 30 minutes is a bit far for our weekly grocery trip, so I'm hoping they decide to build another store that's closer. Greedy, I know. ;)

PA doesn't sell beer...too conservative:rolleyes:

Other than that I don't have much to add....!
Downingtown and Princeton were the closest I knew, as well.
Can't wait for the Downingtown one to open! Dh's entire family lives in West CHester and I will be down there with a HUGE cooler when they open and we visit!

LOVE Wegmans, even Genuardi's at its best didn't come close!
Although in West CHester there is a lttle grocery store called Giunta's that comes close!

Well, it looks like I am going on a (short) road trip!

I checked on Mapquest, and it seems that the Princeton, NJ store is a weensie bit closer to me than the Bethlehem, PA store. So I think I'll go there to take advantage of the beer and wine sections!! I guess depending on the time that I go, one store might be faster than the other (Route 1 vs. 476).

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

:p Love the Wegman's in Amherst NY (Buffalo). The food displays are so tempting :) Always end up buying something ! Now if we could only get NY to let them sell wine and not just beer...never did understand what the difference was. When invited to a last min. dinner, and stop to pick something to take, would love to be able to pick up a bottle ! I just rec'ed their fall Menu cook book in the mail and have picked out some great dinner ideas for fall :p

I want to rant....I used to love Genuardi's and now I hate it that Safeway has taken it over. I have a very long list of cons. Right now, they are totally overhauling our Genuardi's and everything is in a new place! I am holding out hope that when the remodel is done, it will be OK.

we lived very close to West Chester and loved that town/city?! Genuardi's was our favorite grocery store until Giant was built in Exton!! Let me know when the Downingtown Wegman's opens, we will be there also, coming from the Reading area. Isn't West Chester cool? So many fun places to visit!!

We have THREE, count them, three Wegmans stores in the Lehigh Valley. One in Allentown (which is within walking distance of my home :D), one in Bethlehem, and one closer to Easton. We are so very lucky! I didn't know about the one in Princeton, that does sound closer for you JenniferDV.

I am so jealous, they have to come south!! Three, just can't believe so many in one area but I know that your area can support them! We should move back to the LHV!! I was hoping that when we both retire we could move back there!!

Do you NJ folks know that there is a Wegman's in Bridgewater? It's off Rte 202, in the same shopping center as the Home Depot. It's a very nice Wegman's, too! I stop there all the time when I'm returning from visiting my parents in PA.

(But, since they're in West Chester and the Downingtown Wegman's opening shortly :D I'll be going there!)

Susan, congrats on your Wegmans!

Diana- the Bridgewater Wegmans is about the same distance from me as the one in Princeton. Bridgewater just opened a wine store- it didn't have one before. The one in Bridgewater is slightly less crazy crowded than the Princeton store so I go there a bit more often.

I just got called to do an political opinion poll yesterday- lots of questions about urban sprawl, traffic control, etc. One question was "Would you approve or disapprove of plans to bring a major grocery store chain into New Brunswick?" I said "Approve- if it's a Wegmans!" :p

Thanks for the reminder Susan! I'll definitely be checking it out soon - although unfortunately I'll be too busy the next couple of weekends, but I WILL get there soon :p

I'd like to say that it would be worth the trip.

Having grown up in Rochester and knowing almost nothing else other than Wegmans, maybe I am a bit biased ;) Now in a city (well... a country really) that doesn't have one, I miss it more than ever!!

Like Natasha mentioned, the bakery and natural food sections can be wonderful, but unfortunately not all Wegmans have the same natural food selection. I do know, though, that more and more Wegmans are working to have better organic areas.

A few Wegmans in Rochester have really great prepared food sections as well...

... Oh, I can't wait to go home! Go check it out and have a lot of fun :)

THANK THE DEAR AND MERCIFUL LORD! :D

We visited my in-laws in West Chester last week and we drove by the Wegman's but they still didn't have a sign up saying when they open. Now I will definetly be taking a cooler when we go down to visit! Love, Love that store!

I am so excited about Wegman's opening!!! I have been looking through old Wegman's threads and noting what everyone likes there. I already got my Wegman's card too! :D

Can I just say how much I love this BB? Two weekends ago we attended a party at DH's boss's house. I hadn't met many of his colleagues yet- they are all shocked that we actually live in New Brunswick. No one else in his office (which is located in New Brunswick) actually lives here.

Anyway, someone asked me where we shop. I said "mostly at Wegmans." She said "Oh, I didn't know there was a Wegmans in New Brunswick. It must be new." I said "No, not in New Brunswick, I go to Princeton or Bridgewater." Four people just stared at me like I was crazy.

It's nice to know I'm not the only Wegman's addict!! :D

I missed it - I figured it would be crowded. Hopefully I'll get there before the end of May - my weekends are pretty busy with graduations coming up!

I'm so excited!! There was a feature article about Wegman's in the Baltimore Sun yesterday--they are going in open a store just north of the city! It won't be open for another 2 years, but I'll be so anxious for it to open. They showed a photo of the produce section--wow, it looked like it was the size of my whole grocery store!

LOL! Angela, I could spend hours alone in the produce section! It's the most amazing thing I've ever seen!
