warning! read this thread only if you have a gigantic sweet tooth. all others proceed at your own risk

Someone brought a dessert into the office two years ago at halloween. Some of the ingredients were candy corn, oreos, and white chocolate. I can't remember what else was in it.

I know this sounds gross to most of you, but you were warned. :)

Anyway, does anyone have a recipe for this? I think it was called "candy corn bark." I did an internet search but came up empty. :(

Val, I think it's a good thing we don't live near each other. You and I apparently have the same kind of sweet tooth. Unfortunately, I'm going to WW to pay for mine! That sounds wonderful--any chance you could ask this person for the recipe?

Hi Val,

This one from BHG looks promising. Bet you could sub candy corn for the peppermint sticks.......

I'm searching. I'm dying to make it ... the BHG recipe is as close as I've come.

Still looking. Fun article about candy corn:

thanks for the recipe, sandy.

and thanks for the article, MK. okay, so now I know I am not the only one who loves candy corn in all its sickly sweetness.

I emailed the person who brought it in to work. (I work from home now, so I wasn't able to walk over and ask her in person.) She says she may still have the recipe, but she isn't sure. If she can dig up this 2 year old recipe, I will post it.

OMG- love candy corn!! And I'm sure I'm not the only one who used to take the white tips and pretend they were vampire teeth. (o.k., maybe I revealed too much)

DH & I usually buy one bag before Halloween to get us in the festive fall mood, but then we scour the drug stores afterwards to find it on sale for 50 or even 25 cents and stock up!

OK, I hate candy corn (though I did play vampire teeth with them when I was little, too) but my sister LOVES it. I'm sending her a care package pretty soon and would love to make that for her! She has a huge sweet tooth and will actually eat candy until she makes herself sick (yet she's a size 4 and I, the master of restraint and healthy eating, am a 14...hmmm...). Anyway, do post if you get the recipe.

I love Candy Corn too. Have you had with peanuts? It is a great combo!

Speaking of "bark," my sitter covered Ritz Bitz in almond bark and sprinkles and it is delicious. Sounds kind of gross, but really, anything covered in almond bark is awesome. The kids love it.

doesn't sound gross to me. I love the salty-sweet combo!

I know I would love a snack mix that had peanuts and candy corn. In fact, I found a candy corn snack mix recipe a few days ago that I will most definitely try this fall.

I will post the recipe tomorrow when I get a chance.

I've never had the candy corn bark but I wonder if it's like the stuff I make at Christmas time.

Basically you mix pretzels, chex, M&Ms and peanuts (or whatever you like). Then you melt white candy melts (the candy making wafers) with a tablespoon of vegetable oil. You pour the white stuff over the snacky stuff, mix it up, and let it cool.

I would imagine it would work with Oreos but I'm not sure if the warm candy melts would do anything to candy corn.

Tracy,

that is probably pretty much how it works. thanks.

update:

I emailed my friend asking if she found the recipe. Here is the note she sent back:

Sorry, no. But, I didn't forget! I got to look a little but our power has been out since sometime yesterday. I'll try again tonight, assuming that the power is back on!
Are you hoping to make it very soon?

I laughed out loud. She must think it is strange that I am so anxious to see a halloween recipe when October 31st is still a long way off. I didn't tell her that I had a thread going on the CL BB regarding this recipe!

Every year I make the Christmas peppermint bark that was in the magazine (before BHG printed it though). Think of that recipe, but just change the ingredients! Melt the white chocolate (or those candy disks), chop up the oreos and maybe the candy corn, even add orange food coloring to the chocolate. You could use whatever yoiu wanted.....Hmmm....sounds good to me!

PS: I just melt the chips in the micro, works great!

Well, I took this as a personal challenge. I don't even like candy corn, too sweet for me, but I want to see if I could find anything. One interesting thing I learned is that candy corn is sometimes called "chicken toenails", which brings to mind a really pleasant image!! :p Anyway, this is what I found, the first recipe is closest I could come, and the rest are just there for all you candy corn lovers!!

I love when fresh candy corn comes back. My favorite is putting candy corn in with buttered popcorn. Tastes sort of like carmel corn. My favorite candy corn story involves my daughter. She was in 3rd grade, I think and was over at my parents' house. She broke the white tip of a piece of candy corn and told my dad she'd lost a tooth. He believed her at first. :D

Well, here's another variation on the Party Mix idea:

Halloween Party Mix

1 pkg (11 oz) mini pretzels
1 pkg (10 oz) Mini Nutter Butters (peanut butter sandwich cookies)
1 c dry roasted peanuts
1 c sugar
1/2 butter or margarine
1/2 c light corn syrup
2T vanilla
1t baking soda
1 pkg (10 oz) M&M's
1 pkg (18 oz) candy corn

In a large bowl combine pretzels, Nutter Butters, and peanuts. In a large saucepan combine sugar, butter, and corn syrup. Bring to a boil over med. heat, boil for 5 min. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and baking soda (mixture will foam). Pour over pretzel mixture and stir till coated. Pour into a greased 15x10x1 baking pan. Bake at 250 for 45 min, stirring every 15 min. Let cool but break apart while still warm. Toss with M&M's and candy corn. Cool completely. Store in an airtight container. Makes 16 cups.

Well, I'm embarassed to say that I tried out the Halloween Snack Mix - the one without the Nutter Butters in it. Know what? It's pretty darn good. There are some important things that are not included in the directions, though:

1) When you pull the pretzels/peanuts from the oven, transfer them to a large expanse of non-stick something, like parchment paper. Do not let the mixture cool in the pan.

2) Do not add the candy until the pretzels/peanuts are slightly cooled and broken up a bit. Again, do not let the mixture cool in the pan.

3) Do not let the mixture cool as a giant mass, either in a bowl, or in its pan. Seriously. Don't do it.

It wouldn't hurt. It's basically just like making caramel corn, so if you have experience with that, use what you've learned before. :) To me, the best way to do it would be to remove the pretzels/peanuts to a length of parchment paper, Silpat, or a well-greased COOL cookie sheet to cool further. At that point, I'd add the candy.

And Little Bit -- the pan's not ruined. I have some skinned knuckles from my futile attempts at getting the stuff out of the pan. :) And even if there's not many whole pretzels (or candy corn, or M&M's) left, I made a REALLY GOOD ice cream mix-in. :)

Halloween Party Mix

Recipe By :
Serving Size : 0 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories : Appetizer/Snack

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 box Ritz miniature peanut butter filled crackers
1 -11 oz. pkg. small pretzel twists
1 cup dry roasted peanuts
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
2 Tbs. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 -18 oz. pkg. candy corn
1 -10 oz. pkg. plain M&M's

Combine the peanut butter filled Ritz bitz, pretzels and peanuts and place in a large greased baking pan (I used my turkey roaster). Set aside.

In saucepan combine butter, sugar and corn syrup. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Boil for 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and baking soda. Mixture will foam up.

Pour over the combined pretzel mixture and stir until coated.

Bake in a preheated 250 oven for 45 minutes. Be sure to stir well every 10 minutes.

After baking pour out onto wax paper lined cookies sheets and break mixture apart while still warm. (I probably used greased foil, because I don't always have wax paper)

When cooled completely toss with candies. Store in Tupperware or other airtight container.

I adore candy corn. I've saved all the recipes from this thread! Except for that one for fudge that uses icing. Anyway, I'm here to tell you one thing NOT to do w/ candy corn. I can't believe this thread has survived so long on a HEALTHY COOKING bulletin board...ahem...we should all be ASHAMED of ourselves...

That said, I'd like to report back that I made the original recipe that Val was searching for, and it is ADDICTING!!!! Shame on you, Val, for putting this in front of us!!!!:p

The instructions are a little misleading: melted white chocolate doesn't "drizzle", it "glops". I've had this problem before. So I splatted it onto the pretzel/cookie mixture and mixed the whole thing up with a spatula, and then spread it back out into the pan. It was sort of an orange color flecked with black (yum, I know).

Also, I think it would be better to mix the candy corn in with the chocolate mixture, because after the whole thing cooled and I broke it into pieces, practically all of the candy corn fell off!

I was seriously afraid this would be a disaster because it looked pretty horrible in the pan as it cooled, but it got nice and crunchy and is REALLY GOOD. Next time I'll add more pretzels, because I love that salty taste with the sweet.

YUM.

schuh

I've done something similar and I found that mixing a tablespoon of oil in with the chips (or white candy melt wafers) makes the white chocolate much less gloppy.

I had a feeling that this thread would work its way back up as Halloween got closer.

My sweet tooth was definitely unleashed after reading this one last month. Val, you warned us and I should have listened. Usually my holiday season eating frenzy starts with Thanksgiving, but this year it started before Columbus Day. Oh boy are my jeans gonna be tight.

I made the party mix and the rice krispy treats so far, both were yummy and looked so festive.

Next on my list is a recipe for Halloween Oreo Cookie Brownies. Basically, you take a box of brownie mix, prepare it and cook it for a few minutes, then crumble oreos on top and bake it some more. This is the easiest yet. I'm afraid to try the bark, the DDs and I have dentist appts in 2 wks!

I just made this and I have some tips for those planning on making this. (Some of them have already been suggested)

~~First of all I doubled the recipe since I'm making it for my son's school party. So I used a large jelly-roll pan.

~~Cover your pan with foil!

~~Lay all the ingred. out onto the pan. Pour the melted choc. onto the candy. (Yes, I added veg. oil to the choc. when melting to make it smoother and thinner.)

~~Than kind of fold and press the ingre. almost like rice krispy treats.

~~Cool and let harden.

~~Lift the foil out of the pan and break into pieces.

I didn't use the foil and a lot of it just stuck to the pan. I now have some bark and more of a mix with all the broken small pieces. Because I just laid the candycorn on top (as recipe suggested) instead of folding it in most have fallen off.
It's all still yummy, just 2 different kinds of treats!! Next year I'll use my suggestions here and try again!

another suggestion: don't worry about following the amounts exactly. if you'd like more or less of one of the ingredients (oreos, pretzels, or candy corn), feel free to make changes! I adjusted the recipe amounts to my tastes.

After trying to make this bark last night, I thought about resurrecting this thread last night, but was too depressed to do it. I was so excited: had the Oreos chopped, the pretzels broken, and the candy corn standing by. Then I tried to melt the white chocolate. I bought Nestle white chocolate bars because I read something on this board (I think) about chips being made to hold their shape. I made sure the heat was very low, and I was all prepared to add veg oil to help it out, but the bars SIMPLY WOULD NOT MELT. I ended up with a big, hard glob of white chocolate and was so disappointed that I just threw everything out. Sigh.....

bummer, LA98! I am sorry it didn't work. :(

how did you try melting the white chocolate baking bars? sounds like you did it on the stove. I *think* that is the kind I used and it melted fine in the microwave (per the directions on the package).

Tiger

LA98- Oh no!!!!!!!!! What a shame and a waste. I know once you buy everything you need it's not a cheap recipe to make.
I used Nestle's white morsals. I used 2 bags since I was doubling the recipe and about 5 Tbs. of veg. oil. I couldn't drizzle the choc. like the recipe stated but it mixed pretty easily. I melted it in my double broiler. The last time I tried melting choc. in my microwave it burnt so I wasn't going to chance it.
I feel for you. We've all been there when your excited about a recipe and it doesn't turn out at all!
Did you really throw away all the ingred.? If you didn't it might be worth it to try a different choc. Maybe even brown choc. and just make a party mix.

LA98
10-30-2002, 09:02 AM
I did try it on the stove. When I saw it wasn't working I tried putting it in the microwave, which I think only made it worse (weird-looking and grainy-tasting). Yes, I did throw out what was on the pan. Later on I was ashamed of myself for being so wasteful, but in the sad state I was in, I would've eaten every last Oreo (the candy corns, thankfully, were spared!)

Tiger
10-30-2002, 09:03 AM
Ok, LA98 I'm sure you want to just forget about it at this point but I do have to ask: when you said you did it on a stove do you mean directly or in a double broiler?

LA98
10-30-2002, 09:36 AM
In a small, heavy saucepot on the stove. I don't have a true double boiler, just a steamer insert for one of my pots (which wouldn't work well for melting chocolate, LOL!!). I should really invest in one though.

LA98 you should get a double broiler. I could never melt choc. directly on the stove. A double broiler is so much easier and makes it more foulproof. When my parents gave me my All-clad set it was the first thing I added to it!

I have a double boiler but sometimes I'm too impatient to use it. If you use a regular pan on low heat and stir constantly you should be ok.
I've found for these things that some oil seems to work wonders. I wonder what would've happened if you added a tablespoon or so of oil to that white chocolate mixture...

Received the new taste of home magazine and came across the Jack o Lantern Jumble. I think I would add pretzels and maybe chocolate, maybe. hope to give it a try this weekend

4 cups Corn Chex
4 cups Rice Chex
1 cup salted peanuts
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup peanut butter
2 1/4 tsp. worchestershire sauce
1/2 tsp .salt
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1 cup candy corn

In a large bowl, combine the cereal and peanuts. In a small saucepan, over medium heat, combine the butter through garlic powder; cook and stir until butter and peanut butter are melted. Pour over the cereal mixture and toss to coat.
Spread mix into a GREASED 15"*10"*1" baking pan. Bake at 250 degrees for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Cool; stir in candy corn. Store in an airtight container. Yields: 2 quarts

I have to say this didn't go over too well with the kindergarders. I don't think they liked the look of it. They're happier with a simple cookie.
But it was a big hit tonight with the adults. They called it addicting.

I made this again for ds's teachers and I used all your tips. It worked out really well. Man, white chocolate is wierd stuff to work with. Part of it would be liquid and part of it sort of solid and I finally jsut mixed it together and glopped it on. But after the folding it was fine. Thanks.

I had to get it out of the house. It is addicting. Thank goodness Halloween is OVER!

patty - interesting that the kids didn't go for it. I'll have to remember that. Everytime I have seen the stuff around adults it gets devoured. kind of ironic since I think the recipe was created for kids. then again, I bet older kids would like it more than the kindergarteners. -val

I made this for ghosting baskets for my neighbors and the leftovers were devoured by my daughter. I didn't have foil on hand (after forgetting to get some in my 3 trips to the supermarket) so I couldn't make it for her to bring to class as she had wanted. Yesterday morning I realized that I had the ingredients for the chocolate pretzel rings so I made those with hershey hugs and rolos and put a candy corn on them instead of m&m's - and these were a perfect substitute for the bark!

I made an Autumn dessert tray last weekend for my sister's Christening which included this. I figured it would add a lot of color. It was the first time my Dad had it and he was cracking me up. He kept telling everyone to try it that it tasted like Halloween. I asked him exactly what he meant. He said it's like you're a kid and you took everything from your Halloween bag and put it together. :p :p :D :D

I thought about making this bark for the bake sale at the school last week, and I think it might have been a better choice even thought it would have required a late night trip to the store (not that I didn't try to get there during the day ;) ). Now I need another way to get rid of some of it before I will feel safe making it (and not eating at least half of it myself).

Thanks, Bob :).

Glad they were actually raves rather than rants. The recipe I use is a little tricky, but I think it tastes better than the usual almond crunch recipes.

The Howlin' Bark must look ghoulishly awesome laid out on a tray. I can't imagine any better candy for a children's Halloween party...or even an adult Halloween party. Why haven't I made this????

I don't know about you, Anna, but I think I was one iongredient short last year and then was afraid to make it without knowing most of it would immediately leave the house.

I have promised to help with the school's fall festival again and am sure I will take some goodies for the bake sale. I'm thinking the bark might go over well, but you never know. Last year the slice and bake cookies went before the homemade cakes.

Resurrecting this thread again...

After 2 years, I have finally made this bark. I melted the white choc chips in the microwave, adding about 2 t of peanut oil (didn't have any plain vegetable oil, and thought EVOO would be too weird ;))

I'm glad I read this thread, though. Even thinned with the oil, that stuff didn't spread. I ended up just kind of mixing it all together and spreading it back out on my buttered waxed paper, then sprinkled it with brown sprinkles (couldn't find any orange :( )

As I advised in a cookie thread earlier today, I'm getting this stuff out of the house. ;) It's way, way sweet, but with the salty crunch that would keep me coming back for more long after I have had too much.

But I feel better for having gotten the bug out of my system on making this stuff!

claire797
10-09-2004, 06:37 AM

Beth
10-13-2004, 12:32 PM
OKay -- planning for the festival next week and knowing it will be a crazy week. Will this hold well if I make it this weekend, or is it better to make it the night before? It wont take that long, so it's not a huge deal either way, but I might get some quiet time this weekend. What do you think?

doggerham
10-13-2004, 12:57 PM
Beth, I think it was mentioned earlier (or maybe I'm thinking of another thread), but I found when it was stored in tupperware, the white choc kind of got a little soft and sticky. Now, this was NOT in the fridge, so that might take care of the problem. I made it the night before, and left it covered with saran wrap on the cookie sheet overnight and broke it up in the morning.

Beth
10-13-2004, 03:32 PM
Thanks, Amy. Sticky is not good. I think I'll make it the night before I take it to the school and be sure not to use too much oil.

Beth
10-23-2004, 04:29 PM
OK, I did make this, but I didn't like the way it looked by the time I spread the white chocolate around. I'm thinking I would spread the white chocolate in a pan first, then sprinkle and press in the crumbled stuff, then drizzle melted chocolate on top.

This time, my son came in and helped. He saw the chocolate chips out on the counter and asked if I was going to put some of those in. We decided to sprinkle some on top and put them in the oven for just a couple of minutes (already hot from baking a cake), pulled the pan out, spread the melted chocolate, the sprinkled candy corn and fall confetti sprinkles on top. Looked great, tasted great, but probably more sweet that the sweet/salty combo.

I had to leave the Pumpkin Patch early (something about another concussion in our household), but I think it was going over well, and the mom I saved a bag for loved it.

Beth
10-24-2004, 07:11 AM
The cookie crumbs, some of the orange oreo filling and everything mixed together. It looked more like dirt than white chocolate with stuff in it, if that makes sense. If the white chcolate would pour and settle over the stuff without spreading, that would be fine, but it is pretty gloppy and requires some work to spread it.

Interesting. For some reason, I visualized the candy as having big chunks of cookie in it rather than crumbs, but I can definitely see how crumbs would make it look murky.

Beth, maybe you mentioned it already but I couldn't find it. What kind of white chocolate did you use? White chips? I have decided that this recipe might make good use of white candy bark. I know it's not real white chocolate, but if I remember correctly it really does melt well and is less tempermental than white chocolate or even white chips.

Beth
10-24-2004, 07:39 AM
It did have big chunks of cookie -- I probably chopped the cookies into 6-9 pieces each, but all those pieces had crumbs. I did use chips. I had them and figured I would like the taste better.

I have the stuff to make another batch and may try the other method today -- the school custodian has been so good to us while working on the pumpkin patch and everything. I also owe my yard guy a treat. He says I must not love him anymore because I haven't been baking cookies! ;) If I try the other method, I'll let you know how it works. I'm just not sure how much I'll be up to doing today.

I made this last year, and did a modified version this year. The Oreos mostly stayed in chunks.
I'd highly recommend the white candy melts as opposed to the white chips. The white chips are much harder to work with -- they don't get as melty and they thicken up really quickly. (Real white chocolate is a little too pricey for this kind of thing and also hard to work with.)

Well, I finally made this stuff and here's the picture. As everyone has said, it's sweet, but I didn't find it cloying or unpleasant. Hopefully, I'll get some comments on it when I lay it on the Halloween cookie platter tomorrow.

I went ahead and used the cheapo white candy bark instead of white chips and I'm glad I did. It melted easily and tastes very good. This is definitely a recipe you can play around with thematically -- St. Patrick's Day Bark, Christmas Peppermint Bark (like Williams Sonoma), Easter Bark.....whatever. Very fun :).

Anna, thanks for that tip. I made the bark last week and pretty much devoured it but I did find the white chips hard to blend so I will give candy bark a try for the next batch on Saturday.

Val, thanks for this recipe. It is great -- a new Halloween classic.

BTW, I thought this would make a great topping for ice cream and tastewise, it did, but those candy corn freeze INSTANTLY once they come into contact with the ice cream. Yummy though.

I made this tonight for a prty tomorrow. It's sooo easy and you don't have to measure anything.! I made it even easier and had it together in 10 minutes tops.

My ingredients:
3 handfuls of mini pretzels, broken
1 to-go cup of mini oreos
1 snack bag of mini chocolate cream oreos
1 large bag of Reeses Pieces (orange, yellow, and brown, how perfect?)
1 bag of candy corn (store brand)
16 oz of white bark coating (12 oz just wasn't quite enough) melted in the micro.

I put the mini-oreos (no chopping needed!) and pretzels down, melted the candy bark in the micro and poured it over, smoothed that a bit with the spatula, and then poured the candy corn and reeses over that and pressed down using parchment paper. Basically the entire top is covered with candy with hardly any white showing.

all the ingredients were great separate, I refuse to break it up until after I get to the party, otherwise i may snack on it all!

I finally made this as this was the first year I was able to find the Halloween Oreos. I had issues melting the white chocolate chips in the microwave (just wouldn't melt) but as soon as I took it out of the bowl and put it in a saucepan on the stove, it melted just fine. I then also had issues mixing it in - it just seemed like I had too much stuff for the amount of white chocolate. Eventually I got it into a formed together rectangle and let it cool. However, when I went to cut it, I was able to only get about 5 or 6 substantial pieces and the rest just sort of fell apart into a crumbly mix. I thought about trying to recoat the leftovers with more melted chocolate and cooling again but I figured it might just get worse. Did anyone else have this problem? Is it because I tried cutting it with a bench knife instead of tearing it apart with my hands? Did I not have enough white chocolate? I was kind of bummed because it seemed like such a waste of ingredients. DH insisted on taking the cut pieces to work along with the leftovers in a bowl. He said people could just snack on it but I just think it's evidence of my failure. :(

Well, he said they loved it and it was all gone in a few hours but I had muchmore than a few leftover pieces, we're talking more than half of that I made. The raves from his co-workers have inspired me try it again (I do have leftover Halloween Oreos), maybe this time with the white bark and more of it.

I just made up a batch and followed these tips (thanks, patty!). in addition, I broke my oreos into about 5 pieces each. I didn't have any problem with a lot of crumbs that way -- they mostly stayed in chunks.

I used regular oreos instead of halloween ones. I couldn't find the WHITE candy melts at joann's craft store. they were all out. so I used orange colored ones (they still had a regular vanilla flavor. tasted very good to me). here is a picture of how it turned out (just a chunk of it). trashy, but very tasty. oh, and contrary to what some of the other posts said... my kindergartener LOVES this stuff.

I made a batch of this last night. It is sinful! You only need/want a very small piece - I think it sets a record for sugar per square inch.

I used regular oreos, broken into 5 pieces the val way, pretzel sticks broken in thirds, candy corn, and then Halloween colored M&M's in place of the sprinkles. I used Trader Joe's white chocolate chips (which re-appeared in the stores a couple of weeks ago). I think this is going to be a new tradition:D

I still think it's a little early for this stuff but this thread must get bumped again to keep the record going. Though I think it's kind of funny that I was the last person to post on it last year.

Does Oreo still make Halloween Oreo's? I don't think I have ever seen them at our stores before.

Yep, they sure do! They work well in the Oreo brownies ;)

YUM.

A thousand times ditto. I ended up melting some white candy melts to drizzle over the top. The white chocolate chips never got runny enough to drizzle. After drizzling the white melts over the top, I put the candy corn and sprinkles on that. I think it will be fine, but doesn't look like I had thought it would. I'm sure it will be a hit at our tailgating today though!
I should have read this entire thread again before making the recipe, but got in a hurry.

I'm going to make this for a bake sale next Friday. How far in advance do you think it can be made?

I got the Wilton candy melts, twist pretzels (couldn't find the Halloween ones), choco Chips Ahoy type cookies, and Indian corn. Mixed it all together in a bowl (didn't have time to deal with drizzling) and spread on a plastic tray. Hardened in no time - even quicker when I tossed a batch in the freezer. Broke up and bagged for 'Baker's Rack' at the Pumpkin Patch.

I put a little Canola Oil on the trays before starting.

Started this at the church at 4:30 and had the stuff bagged up by 5:30. All I needed was a microwave and big bowls.

My kids & I made this last night. Although they enjoyed making it neither would touch it. I, on the other hand, have been all over it. Time to send it to work with DH tomorrow.

We're going to use the rest of the pretzels and candy corn and get Hershey's kisses to do chocolate pretzels that way as someone else suggested. I know the kids will eat those.

i've made this before and kept leftovers in the fridge about a week, so you should be ok to do it early.

Thank you!
This is great news for me. I was worried that the cookies would get soggy. I'm making three different things for this bake sale and there's no way I can get it all done in one night.

I made this last night using all the tricks that have been mentioned. I didn't have any problems.
Since we'll be selling these, I wanted to be sure that all the goodies stuck to the white chocolate and I didn't end up with crumbs, so I spread everything but the white chocolate on a 15x9 rimmed sheet. This meant that my bark is thinner than the original recipe. I drizzled and poured the chocolate over all and then used an off-set spatula to kind of spread and move everything around so that I was sure all the ingredients were in contact with the chocolate. I did put the sprinkles on top. I cut it into "bars" while it was still a bit malleable. For the most part, they cut clean. The second pan I made, I waited just a smidge too long and it was more difficult to cut cleanly.
This candy is very safe with me as I don't care for candy corn. But, I'm thinking I may try it again with something other than candy corn since it looks so good!:D Hmmm, maybe Reece's Pieces? Or M&Ms?

It's that time of year! HA HA and I always thing of this thread. So instead of just tracking down the recipe, I thought I'd give it a bump :)

I can't believe it has been 5 years and I haven't tried making this again. I'm going to have to try it and see if I can get it without all the crumbs. Year 8 for this thread!

I made my first batch of the year for the country fair - it won a second place ribbon in the "miscellaneous" category. The stuff is like crack. You don't want to like it, but you can't stop eating it.

LOL That pretty much describes most of the ingredients too. Still, I want to make it for novelty at an event -- if I can get it to look like bark and not a crumby mess. :D

I am trying to get someone here to make it for the United Way Arts and Crafts Fair on October 30th. Beth, if you still want to give it a try, I have an outlet for you!

You people are wicked. I am home making a flourless chocolate cake that was posted on THIS BB by Canice for my anniversary. What am I going to do while it bakes? Make this candy corn bark, of course. AND I can tell him the recipes came from "Cooking Light".:p

Amy, I could not get anything to you this week, and I was hesitant to do food with the week ahead deadline. Didn't know if you would want food items either. I am willing to make some if I can get it to you next week. I will PM or email you in a bit.

I thought of this thread when I saw this recipe in the October Bon Apetit:

Halloween Peanut Butter and Toffee Candy Bark

This Halloween Candy Bark can be made up to a week ahead. Chill it in an airtight container and let it stand at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving. For step-by-step photos of this recipe, see How to Make Halloween Peanut Butter and Toffee Candy Bark.
Makes about 2 pounds or 30 two-inch pieces

* PREP: 20 minutes
* TOTAL: 50 minutes

* 1 pound bittersweet chocolate chips
* 3 2.1-ounce Butterfinger candy bars, cut into irregular 1-inch pieces
* 3 1.4-ounce Skor or Heath toffee candy bars, cut into irregular 3/4-inch pieces
* 8 0.55-ounce peanut butter cups, each cut into 8 wedges
* 1/4 cup honey-roasted peanuts
* 3 ounces high-quality white chocolate (such as Lindt or Perugina), chopped
* Reese's Pieces and/or yellow and orange peanut M&M's

Preparation

*
Line baking sheet with foil. Stir chocolate chips in heavy medium saucepan over low heat until melted and warm (not hot) to touch. Pour chocolate onto foil; spread to 1/4-inch thickness (about 12x10-inch rectangle). Sprinkle with Butterfinger candy, toffee, peanut butter cups, and nuts, making sure all pieces touch melted chocolate to adhere.
*
Put white chocolate in heavy small saucepan. Stir constantly over very low heat until chocolate is melted and warm (not hot) to touch. Remove from heat. Dip spoon into chocolate; wave from side to side over bark, creating zigzag lines. Scatter Reese's Pieces and M&M's over, making sure candy touches melted chocolate.
*
Chill bark until firm, 30 minutes. Slide foil with candy onto work surface; peel off foil. Cut bark into irregular pieces.
